Another season of unbridled optimism, teeth gnashing wailing, and thanks to the transfer portal, wondering, "Who the hell is he?" Same format as before, odds are for the home team, my coin flip picks in italics.

Cal @ River Rats +3: So nice to use one of my nicknames for a Pac-10 school again. Hard game to predict, but for no reason at all, taking Cal to beat the spread and win.

Furd @ Hawaii -2.5: At least Furd gets a nice trip out of it. Hawaii to cover.

East Carolina @ NC State -12.5: Home field advantage helps State cover.

Elon @ Duke -33.5: Elon should be flattered they even rated a point spread. Duke still covers.

Kennesaw St @ Wake Forest -17: My niece's husband is a Demon Deacon alum, so let him have some joy with his alma mater covering.

Georgia Tech @ Colorado -4: Ralphie starts her season with yellow jacket stings. Tech beats the spread.

Syracuse @ Tennessee -13.5: This spread feels a bit low. Tennessee covers.

Alabama @ Florida State +13.5: Will FSU be awful two years in a row? This won't be the game to show it. Bama covers.

Coastal Carolina @ Virginia -12.5: Knowing nothing about these teams I'm taking the easy way out and picking Virginia to cover.

LSU @ Clemson -4: Nice seeing a big matchup to kick the season off. Close game with Clemson covering.

TCU @ North Carolina +3: TCU spoils Belichick's debut and covers. The one third his age girlfriend still gets all the press.

Virginia Tech @ South Carolina -8: Going with the home team to cover.

Notre Dame @ Miami +2.5: Catholics vs. Convicts again. Domers cover while telling Cal, "This is how you finish your opponent off."

NL games: (thanks for the check now go pick on someone your own size)

Duquesne @ Pitt
Fordham @ Boston College
Eastern Kentucky @ Louisville
East Texas A&M @ SMU

Syracuse won 10 games last year and is tougher than you'd think. Tennessee also lost a lot from last years team. Idk if I'd pick Syracuse outright but I have them beating a 2 TD spread. Also the game is technically not @ Tennessee but it is in Atlanta which, let's be honest, is hardly a neutral site. I just think Syracuse has a really good coaching staff and enough talent to keep that game around or within 10 points

The Furd Hawaii game is this weekend (week 0). Are the other games the following week?

Yes they are. Everyone else is lumping the week 0 and 1 games together, so I'm playing along.

This season is going to be crazy interesting. Nearly every team suffered (or benefitted from) massive turnover. Hard to gauge anything from last year's results unless the majority of a team is returning. Makes the casual football viewing more interesting but makes actual fandom rather maddening. I'm still very excited for our Bears, and optimistic.

Something else that's interesting is basically all the Covid redshirts/extra year players are gone by now so there's much fewer 6th 7th and 8th year guys on rosters. I remember that played a role in Washington doing so well in 2023. Hopefully we have a good mix of experienced players and younger talent!

Cal and taking points. I just think Cal has more talent
Furd and taking points. Hawaii is a great state, but a lousy football team.
NC State has been solid the last few years, Taking them to cover at home
Duke covers I guess. Who is Elon? Did Musk now buy a college?
There must be a reason Keenesaw is only a 17 point dog. Taking the points.
Tech is good. Taking the points. I could actually see Tech win this game
Vols cover. They have great skills players. Not sure they prevail if Cuse has stronger line play.
Bama and giving points. FSU has too long a climb from last year to take down Bama.
Coastal Carolina and taking points over poor Virginia.
Agree Clemson covers barely. Two very good teams, but Clemson's Death Valley home court advantage is difference. ACC needs to beat the SEC.

BTW, for extra credit I'm taking points and Texas.

Not saying I'd take them +4 vs Georgia Tech but I actually think Colorado will be better this year than last not recordwise but in terms of on field eye test. Last year Deion was coaching to showcase his sons and get them drafted (by sons I meant Travis Hunter and Shedeur, not Shedeur and Shilo) and this year he'll be coaching without that ulterior motive. I still think GT is underrated and dangerous, and would take them to beat the spread, but I really think Colorado is better off now than a year ago even having lost a top 5 pick

Yes, Gulbranson looks to not be a great QB. Very shaky. I don't think Hawaii is a great team, certainly not Top 25, but furd looks worse, happily so.

In fairness, other than the TE, no one was getting separation. Thye showed this several time on TV. Furd lost their good WRs from last year. Also, the porous Frud line caused Gulbranson to get hit on almost every pass play (though he looks ponderous).

Sure, I won't judge him by one game. But two or three additional throws of his could easily have been picks.

Tbh I think it was the duration and not the dance itself. Like it wasn't aggressive or obscene and the ref let it go for 5 seconds and eventually was just like "alright man you gotta wrap that **** up, you don't get 10 seconds to dance for a sack"
