Just double the coaching staff's pay, and, voila!

Is that staff and player salaries or just the coaches?

Coaches. Just coaches. Nice work, if you can get it.

Best job in America is fired head football coach and no one will convince me otherwise. You get other opportunities in coaching and broadcasting forever no matter what your results were and you keep collecting your buyout money while getting paid by your new employer

LSU coach Brian Kelly said when asked if LSU was spending $18 million in NIL payments to the players that it was "about right".

~$180K/player-yr avg? Good nest egg to graduate with w/o an NFL contract

Compared to Cal, they have over twice as many butts in the seats for every game, sometimes even closer to 3 times as many. So, you have that revenue even before you start counting the SEC dollars.
I don't think this is all that surprising...

But they are absolutely not employees. Nope. Given that the presumption that all workers are employees unless the hiring entity can satisfy all of the following (e.g., ABC test):

  • The worker is free from the control and direction of the hiring entity in connection with the performance of the work, both under the contract for the performance of the work and in fact;
  • The worker performs work that is outside the usual course of the hiring entity's business; and
  • The worker is customarily engaged in an independently established trade, occupation, or business of the same nature as that involved in the work performed.

For 2023-2024, before schools were paying NIL (last data available) (I chose UNC as a sorta competitive school in our conference):

LSU Football total operating revenues: $108,000,000
UNC Football total operating revenues: $ 67,000,000
Cal Football total operating revenues: $ 35,000,000

LSU Football total operating profits/losses: $53,000,000
UNC Football total operating profits/losses: $27,000,000
Cal Football total operating profits/losses: -$10,000,000

LSU Athletics total operating revenues: $220,000,000
UNC Athletics total operating revenues: $164,000,000
Cal Athletics total operating revenues: $ 82,000,000 (Cal reports $119M because it calls $37M of direct institutional aid revenue which is bogus)

LSU Athletics total profits/losses: $1,500,000
UNC Athletics total profits/losses: $8,400,000
Cal Athletics total profits/losses: -$67,000,000

No, $20M isn't going to do it.
