Especially in these days of NIL and unlimited transfers, asking for fan support based on loyalty is likely to be ineffective.

That sums it up for me. Up until NIL and portal, we stood fast with student-athletes - you remember the ones that came to Cal for the degree? The JT era ushered in the elite players who cared little about the degree and then money started flowing everywhere. I am a loyal Cal grad along with my dad, and followed football mostly starting in l958. After all these years of enjoying Berkeley for a game weekend with the family - I am without them now and want to hang my Cal hat on wins.
Bring back bottled beer and cigars at CMS. Should get us back in the Rose Bowl!

Open letter to Ron Rivera, Justin Wilcox, and the rest of the coaching staff and players.

On behalf of all of us, I want to apologize for our disappointing performance as fans tonight. You deserved better than you got from us. Had we believed in you harder after you got up to the 14-0 lead like any decent fanbase would have, we surely would have carried you to victory.

I feel like the other fans on this board are being unduly critical of you, Coach Wilcox, and everyone else. It's unreasonable to expect a general manager of a college football program to go out and raise funds to be able to afford a good football coach. It's unreasonable for us to expect Coach Wilcox to have a winning record against conference opponents across two different conferences in 9 seasons of otherwise exemplary service. The important thing is that if the fans had just gotten off their butts and rooted harder, you would have had the success that it's so obvious that you have thoroughly deserved and earned.

If you are still willing to have us as a fanbase, we promise we will slink back into Memorial Stadium in two weeks and pay overpriced ticket prices to not hear our band play and have overly loud music blasted into our ears at all times and cheer much harder than we did tonight so that we can lift your program to a meaningful victory over the powerful 2-3 North Carolina football program, which probably would have more wins as well if their fans didn't suck as hard as ours do.

No analysis of why Jeff Tedford had success while also strapped w aging facilities?

Is Wilcox married, big family, what makes him tick?

Tedford was clearly just a better coach (at first . . . obviously he declined later).

I'm no fan of Wilcox and think he should have been canned years ago, but I think NIL and conference consolidation have been huge drivers of change in college football. The game in Tedford's era had more in common with Pappy Waldorf's time it has with today's game. Could a young Tedford be successful at Cal today? Man, I just don't know.

Young Tedford clearly had an ability to get the players already on his roster to play better than they had before. I think that skill plays in any era.

How would he have handled all the roster turnover and portal stuff over time? Hard to say that. But I think he would have showed the same immediate impact.

Tedford was successful because he had the coaching chops on offense and surrounded himself with young hungry guys who busted their butt to change the trajectory of the program not only by coaching very well but working to attract the best talent they could and they were very good salesmen. We've not had that since the Tedford staff tbh.

Can we stop with the #calgorithm bs? That died the night we lost to Miami. Stop trotting it out like it's a thing. #calgorithm will never be a thing again.

There's no reason to stop with free marketing for the program. What a strange argument.

That implies that Cal has enough social media presence and/or trend to warrant a rank or curation on social media platforms. We don't. "calgorithm" has been dead since the night we choked to Miami.

I have never heard a worse speech at a worse time to give it, RR. You are getting paid to deal with Wilcox and to win some games. Our job to to root for the team, yes, but to expect performance in return,

Okay, but so what? The people who post about Cal football are doing it for free. What possible reason is there to shut it down? To make our program more obscure?

Doing what for free? Marketing? To who? You're under an assumption that "calgorithm" is trendy or IG or TikTok worthy. It isn't. You're marketing to basically this board. Which actually makes it kinda cringe.

No, the Calgorithm has definitely been noticed by national writers and the ESPN crew. They reference it from time to time. It's not only an insular thing.

But even if it is, then so what? What problem do you have with people who are just having fun as Cal fans?

It was "noticed", as you say - and a good description for it - by national media - in 2024. For about 2 weeks. When ESPN Gameday was at Cal. It has not been a trend for over a year. So what's the problem? Nothing. I just think its amusing that some fans continue to hype it up when it lost any meaning over a year ago.

No, those folks are still mentioning it this year.

Not really. If you type 'calgorithm' into google, it gives you posts from October 2024. Callie Wake only has two posts this year. The 3rd is from October 2024. Its got a hashtag on X from RedditCFB but it mocks us and Stanford. It is not trendy or trending. Sycasey, stop trying to make calgorithm happen. Its not going to happen.

My only argument is that there's no point to "shutting it down." It's just an amusing thing that Cal fans do on Twitter. It's fine.

This is from earlier today, from a general national CFB account.

200 likes with 8 replies? That's a trend? umm...ok.

And the actual post is insulting since the two robots look idiotic and like they can't do anything. Which, actually, is probably an accurate representation of the Cal and Stanfurd football programs.
