I've hesitated to post this because I really don't understand the role of a dual DC. Why do we give up so many yards passing with coverage that usually has 3 to 4 DB's in coverage. I feel I'm missing something? Wilcox is supposed to be a defensive coach but we give up so many yards passing. This game is getting out of hand unless something is being addressed at halftime. Who does Wilcox hold accountable?
Is this true? I don't mean giving up too many yards - I know Cal does that. But I've observed that Cal most frequently has 2 DL, 2 OLB who play like DL most of the time, 2 ILB, and generally 5 DBs. This has been the case for the last several seasons. Occasionally, they only have 3 DL but that frequently means playing 6 DBs. Regardless, I think the main reason for giving up so many passing yards is that Cal has a weak pass rush. The front four can't do the job and Wilcox is too risk averse to blitz more often.
Our twin DCs need to make adjustments faster. So do Harsin and Rolovich on O. Gotta take what the game is giving you. I would agree that we blitz rarely. And when we do, the blitzers are so ingrained with staying disciplined about plugging a lane that its more like a trot than a break-neck full-one blitz. The only two players who seem to blitz with a purpose are Uluave and Ferrelli. Our rush has to be figured out since losing McColloch for the season, while Polidore has to learn quickly to replace Crosby. Leon Bell, we need you to get mean, nasty, and fierce on the OL!
The emotion on the sideline needs to pick up. I have to say that when I was at the BC game, when BC scored 2 TDs quickly, the only player who looked pi$$ed off while returning to the sideline was Uluave. The players can't copy Wilcox's quiet nervousness.
Roll on you Bears!
