FYI under armour is supposedly both behind the change and funding the buyout. They just reupped and I guess it's very expensive for a brand to be losing to northwestern

Under Armour isn't funding this. Penn state is leaving Nike for Adidas next year. Contradictory reports are reading that Adidas is funding the whole thing and was behind the firing but it's not confirmed.

Hkw is he bad? How many wins does cal have against top 5 opponents ovet the past x number of years???!!! And ucla butt stomped msu so may not be that bad.

Retread hires are a mixed bag generally, hiring Franklin would be an upgrade over Wilcox but not the major jolt we are looking for

Whoever you think we can get that's better, we can't. We are NOT an attractive job in the football world. Not even close.

My first instinct would be to scoff but iguess i would want to know top sec b1g programs addiadas has before doing that. Unless they are only chestnut on fire feels like you aint getting 50 million on incremental value

I have to go with Socaltownie on this. How is it worth $50M to Adidas? I don't see the incremental value of one team having a down year. They have a 10 year deal with Indiana that they are paying $54M for total over 10 years. How is it worth one time $50M to them to attempt to make a competitor better when they have the best story in the Big10 right now on their roster for 10 years at the same price?

Yeah I didn't say I believe the rumors. I was more correcting that it was Adidas, not Under Armour that is going to be the kit supplier for Penn State. I figure it's donors fronting this or a large portion of it.

$49m buyout and Penn state didn't even blink. That's what a real football program looks like.

To complete this thought, you don't write a contract you yourself can't walk away from. VS the idea that a great program is defined by how big a loss they can swallow.

I still can't believe Penn St. fired James Franklin. His coaching record the last 3 seasons:

11-2
10-3
13-3

Rose Bowl and Fiesta Bowl wins.

its called accountability. If you make $10 M a year, you cannot lose 3 games in a row, 2 of which are UCLA and Northwestern.

You cannot hire your buddies for coaches instead of doing a full coaching search. You cannot commit to who you are comfortable with as OC rather than doing a full out OC search. You gotta recruit, you gotta meet with donors, you got to have a charismatic persona, you gotta win at all cost.

That's the stake . If you want big boy money, put on your big boy pants. That's what Penn State is saying

Yeah but the next guy to replace Franklin can do a whole lot worse.

Sure, and he can also do a whole lot better. But Pedo State already knows Franklin's ceiling; they want someone who has a higher one.

Cal also knows Wilsux's ceiling, but so far, it looks like it's content with retaining Wilsux and his six (or on occasion, seven!) win seasons with losing conference records.

and they will fire that person too and hire a new one, till they win a national championship, because thats their goal every season, as should be any team's goal

Penn St. has been failing every year since the last time they were crowned champions in 1994.

The last time Pedo State won a championship, they had a peedo on staff.

He could never win the big games. He went 4-21 versus top 10 teams and lost to Ohio State 10 times.

They had a shot at Curt Cignetti, but the latter signed an 8 year extension worth $93million with IU. There are likely other up and coming coaches who will be willing to coach at Pedo State, though. It's hard to imagine one won't have a better record against tanked teams or in big games than James Franklin (unless, of course Pedo State opts to hire Wilsux or someone similar and then inexplicably keeps him as HC for a decade).
