He knew this day was coming. No offense to JW, but RR should (has?) have been having coffee / lunch with 8-15 up-and-coming coaches (in obscure or private locations) and graybeards looking for one more challenge. This includes background checks on the DL.

If he waits too long, no bueno. Doors close.

Agreed he should already have a lot of this work done and planned for.

At the same time I don't think splitting his focus between being an interim coach and hiring the next is the best use of his time.

Rivera as interim would be as the clear leader of the program for the last two games with the coordinators still performing their roles (see Andrew Luck who is also hiring a new coach). If not Rivera make it someone who has been in the program awhile, is a key recruiter and is not a candidate to take over full time like So'oto or Brown. I just think there is too much baggage with Harsin and Rolovich to make either of them Cal's head coach, even on an interim basis at this point. They need to be looking for their next jobs. We also need to let the players, recruits and public know Ron is in charge at this point.

The issue is simplified if we turn down the bowl game, but there are some advantages if we don't. If Ron was doing his work and has someone ready to go the new coach could come in and coach the players for the bowl, but that might not be fair to them. They need the chance to bring in their coaches and players.

It's two meaningless games vs putting 100% focus into what may be the most important hire in the history of cal football. Frankly I don't care who coaches the next two games. I care one hell of a lot that we get the best possible candidate for next year.

Makes sense. You've convinced me. Unless Rivera just takes over the HC duties for next year too and focuses on hiring a great OC.

JW not motivating the team and having them prepared is one issue, then the coordinators also underperformed is another. How can you not be jacked and focused for the Big Game?

BTW, some saw Sac State HC Brennan Marion as an up and coming star with his "Go Go" offense from UNLV.

In the Causeway Classic yesterday, Sac was 3 of 9 in the air with only 17 yards total passing. Marion's rush-heavy play calls were mainly up the gut (predictable), and Sac chewed up 5 long minutes rarely getting out of bounds on an end-of-game drive. Some odd play calling. He doesn't look ready.

Banged-up Ags and Coach Plough surprisingly get a #8 playoff seed, and a Bye.

When we had great RBs and no clear QB I was advocating for Marion as a low cost candidate to replace Wilcox. I do like the idea of being different. But now that we have no RBs and have a great QB I am thinking maybe a guy like Davis Webb, a Cal alum with a deep background in Air Raid is a better direction, if only as OC.

Webb isn't leaving the NFL, where he's on the fast track, to be a coordinator in the NCAA.

You never know until you ask. He is not a coordinator now, so it would be a pay increase and step up in responsibility, not a step back or lateral move. Like I said, it could be with Webb as OC and heir apparent to be HC.

Webb is likely going to be an NFL OC next season.

Or the next, but yes, exactly. I don't know why anyone with an NFL gig would move down to college football. Recruiting is such a nightmare. Enjoy spending your week off 2000 miles away simping in some recruit's living room.

So Fitzgerald = another [barely over] .500 HC. And Chryst is nearing Belichick territory, age-wise.

Agreed. We already have Ron Rivera. No older retread is going to be a better option for us given his love and passion for Cal.

Ideally Ron finds a young, energetic offensive minded coach that is a great fit for Cal that he can mentor and the entire fanbase can rally around.

But Rivera is the baseline. The hire needs to be better than Ron or Ron should just be the coach and any established head coach in his age bracket is either unaffordable or not as good.
