Wait too long to fire the coach and you have only the guys that no one else wanted to hire. That is how we ended up with Wilcox when Williams waited until well into January to fire Dykes.

Which is why all the Tosh hate is silly, because it could be an eventuality

But not as head coach. If we are having a defense guy we should just make Rivera HC with Tosh as DC. Bring in Davis Webb or Troy Taylor as OC.

Which is why RR should've pulled the trigger after SDSU. The writing was on the wall that Wilcox was not the right guy to lead Cal to conference championship contention. Cal needs a football team in contention for conference championships, at a minimum, to have a shot at P2 football come the next realignment. Waiting for the candidate pool to dry out before firing the incumbent so Cal can dip a toe into the pool was foolish. At best, Wilcox would've won some games and gotten a job offer elsewhere, which would've reduced the amount Cal was obligated to pay him. However, not only was that a major gamble (that looks like it's about to blow up in RR's face), but it also delayed Cal's rebuild and opportunity to recapture fans. Basically, RR got caught being shortsighted when he needed to be a long-term strategic thinker.

NAY. Rivera, with his contacts, should be able to do better. Tosh needs to prove himself, somewhere (Beavs??), as a head coach. More to it than recruiting

Even if he does, I wouldn't want him at Cal. My two cents - worth what you paid for it

I have been told by people around the program at the time (and one person that I know 99% of Cal fans respect) that Tosh's move was a business move. Whether it's Tosh or someone else, we need to get over it and treat this like the business it is, get ruthless, stop being soft and win.

I don't think he would, but the Tosh fans think he loves Cal enough to do so, so I'm throwing them a sop. I just don't want to hire him as HC.

I am neither endorsing nor objecting to Tosh. I also don't think the pool of candidates available to Cal is going to be all that great, it's going to be coordinators who have never been head coaches before, and whatever meh G6 head coaches are still available after the "hot" ones take SEC or Big Ten jobs. Wilcox had to go, but that doesn't automatically mean the next guy will engineer a prompt turnaround.

Personally I'm not in favor of Tosh. I'm over the betrayal. I'd rather be a good program than get relegated just to prove a point from 15 years ago, especially when we already hired as HC Wilcox who was involved in the coup and would have loved Peterson who oversaw it.

My issue is that Tosh is a good recruiter but idk about anything beyond that. All his good defenses as DC came with an elite defensive HC (Lanning and Saban) and insane supporting staffs. His strength has never shined on its own; it may be that he's great at it and it may be that he had his hand held, we don't know bc we weren't in their meeting rooms. So I'm unsure of his X's & O's and his overall leadership qualities. We also don't know who his connections are on the offensive side.

So if that's the shot we take then I'm fine with it. But I have serious issues, none of which are related to the betrayal incident from forever ago

Oregon OC Will Stein is going to get a HC job next year, If Brohm leaves Louisville then I think they take Stein, who played QB at Lville, otherwise I think he should be a finalist for the Cal job.

The last OC from Oregon we hired turned out pretty well.

Brohm just got an extension to ward off suitors elsewhere, so Louisville is locked up for a while, but Will Stein can get many other jobs better than ours at the moment

The thing is, a lot of these bigger programs don't necessary pick the best candidate, there often is some local bias and tunnel vision.

He's not getting the Penn State job, that leaves LSU, Auburn and Florida as "bigger" jobs.

Arkansas
Auburn
Cal
Florida
LSU
Oklahoma St.
Penn St.
Furd
UCLA

Also, Stein knows JKS, has worked with him.

If that were true he never would've betrayed Cal and told a recruit to go elsewhere on Cal's dime. Tedford already matched the salary UW was offering him. He then went back to UW and used Cal's offer to increase his pay before pulling his negative recruiting on Cal's recruiting trip.

To be clear, I'd have no problems with what he did if he hadn't negatively recruited against Cal while employed by Cal and sent on a recruiting trip for Cal. If he'd just told Tedford, I'm going to UW because they're willing to pay me even more, that's perfectly fine. If he'd negatively recruited Cal while employed as an agent of UW, that's all good. What he did was not. It showed utter disdain for Cal and the coach who gave him a shot at the coaching ranks.

Screw Tosh.

You might end up with Stein as your HC if Lanning goes to LSU. I presume Stein would be a lock to replace him in case he leaves?

Yep. LSU is offering Kiffin $13 million a year, and Lanning is a better head coach than Kiffin, so why not give that same big bag to Lanning after Kiffin chooses someplace else? Coaches worse that Lanning have won national titles at LSU, it's got to be a tempting place to go even though the governor is a clown.

Lanning isn't going anywhere, yet, and there is zero reason to think he will be any time soon. To suggest otherwise is ignorant nonsense. If he wanted Alabama or LSU or FSU or Penn State or Florida or you name it, he'd have it.

I have no idea who would replace him.

edit: And those are all far better jobs than Oregon if the singular goal is to win a natty.

I think there are candidates that people wouldn't hate, even if he wasn't their first choice or they REALLY wanted someone else. There is no doubt Tosh is more divisive than other candidates because there is no other candidate that elicits strong emotions for or against.

I don't feel strongly either way. My main issue is I want a guy with an offense. If we have the money and Tosh has a great OC he can bring in….
