In my emotional opinion - it would be EXTREMELY ruinous to Cal and Tosh's reputation here (which is already very damaged) should he win the job and do decently-well and then leap to a higher profile/paying job elsewhere.

I caution here because his resume is littered with a bunch of short term stays AND more importantly he ratpunked us once already - we'd look awful stupid if he left us in a lurch again.

Tosh better be committed to a LONG term residency here. Otherwise, GTFO, we don't need it.

Tedford's gotta be shaking his head in disbelief at the consideration. I'm still looking for that in-depth mea culpa,

"the lasting sin I can't get over and gotta make right".
And a blessing by the offended,

"it's okay, my son - I forgive you".

Just a few political pointers for the pro-Tosh-crowd. How to sell a candidate to the people!

Tosh will say he is committed to Cal forever and only Tosh will know if he is being truthful. I really don't care as long as it is convincing to donors, recruits and fans and he wins at a high enough level to get offers from top programs, whether he takes them or not.

Because if he leaves for Alabama say, we will be winning a lot more games than we lose, they will have to pay us his buyout, and we will be in a great position to hire his successor (maybe promote his OC or hire Desean).

Tosh being successful and leaving is the last thing we should be worried about in hiring him. We would have zero expectation a non-alum would stay if he gets a much better offer, so Tosh already has most of the other candidates beat on that score anyway. We just need to hire the guy that has the best chance of succeeding at a high level. Continued losing conference seasons that many fans and administrators construe as "good coaching" and is maintained for 9 seasons would kill off Cal football.

I remember similar worries when Wilcox seemed on the rise in his first few seasons: what if he starts winning too much and we have trouble keeping him? My answer was always that I'll take that problem over the alternative.

Then after two losing seasons in 2020 and 2021 people here were worried he would jump to Oregon (with Oregon having to pay us!) and celebrated Knowlton extending him six more years after he already reportedly turned them down.

Such a learning experience for Cal. Cannot get roped into those long contracts again. If a coach wants to leave for more money, C'est la vie.

Winning too much??? At Cal. Lol. You mean he might win 8 games, we should have a problem like hiring a Cignetti clone, winning 20+ games in two seasons, at 85 i could live with two great years back to back and then losing the coach

If they go 10-2 and finish ranked #8 after smashing a ranked Clemson in the Citrus Bowl, you match ASUs offer.

If they just went 6-10 over the last 2 seasons and they say they have an offer from Oregon you silently say "Hallelujah!" wish them well and take Oregon's money.

If they just went 6-10 over the last two seasons and they say they had an offer from Oregon but turned them down, maybe you ask why, think "Uggh" and welcome them back, but you absolutely don't give them a 6 year extension. And that shouldn't have to be a "lesson learned."
