Yeah, but look who he lost to: San Diego State, Virginia Tech, Stanford, and Duke. And we just squeaked by Boston College and North Carolina. 6 teams we should have easily won. There's no way you can candy coat the fact that he was just a very bad head coach.

He is trying to come up with things to convince the Oregon State board that they should hire Wilcox because any money they pay him will reduce our payments to him.

I agree that's a worthwhile endeavor, but I just can't believe that ANY school would want Wilcox as head coach. If they're considering him, they should just watch the tape of the Big Game. That was nauseating.

In my 66 years, Wilcox has the second most wins of any Cal coach. And he did this for an under average salary with a horrible AD and sport's unfriendly administration. OSU would be crazy to not hire him and I think it's a typiCal move to have fired him.

He had the most wins because he was head coach for 9 years. That's longer than any Cal head coach in modern history. His winning percentage over that period at Cal was 46.7% in spite of playing 3 cupcakes every year, and he lost 75% of the bowl games we were in..OSU (or any other school) would be crazy to hire him as head coach. They should just watch the replay of the Stanford game. That was classic Wilcox, and after 2 weeks of preparation.

All with the rigorous demands and academics at Cal so he's prime beef to most colleges in the nation. Oregon was trying to hire him away and now they, CAL, want to hire Tosh someone whose not as highly respected at Oregon as Wilcox? Just stupid"."

How does that sound?

Wilcox also went to four times the number of bowl games as his predecessor at Cal, who played in the national championship.

And he lost three out of the 4 bowl games.

Are you still not catching on to what we are doing here?

I repeat: OSU would be crazy not to hire him.
Bonus tip: go long on Netscape.

Folks he's gone, let it go. He wasn't great, he wasn't inept. Everything about him was average and that was OK with the administration until now. For some of you to continue to disparage him says more about you than him. Wish him well and hope we do better next hire.

He also has the second-most losses of any Cal coach. He was paid roughly $25M in his 9 seasons, and is still owed another $10M.

42-50 overall
23-43 in conference
1-3 in Bowl games (Cheez-it, Redbox, Independence, and L.A. Bowls)

I agree that he's a good fit at OSU. But it was time for a change at Cal.

OSU should hire him as a DC, they could do a lot worse than him as a coordinator.

If I were the OSU AD, I would break the piggybank and go after Oregon's Will Stein as a head coach and get Wilcox as a DC on a 5 year contract with $1 for his first two years, where he is getting $5 million from us...

Given OSU's situation these days, you are probably not too far away saying that their budget for coaches' salaries can fit in a piggy bank.

So why are we paying Rivera $800k when he is still being paid by the Commanders?

I looked at future schedules. I hope we don't schedule them in the future.

why would we not want a cupcake win?

Like SDSU, for example? Or a 3-7 team?

I do wish him well and certainly hope we do a helluva better on the next coach hire. That doesn't change the fact that he was a terrible, below average head coach.

How does that sound? Like you couldn't in to a community college.

Did you mean "like you couldn't get into a community college"
You made two mistakes. You're welcome.

lol, guilty as charged. Your post was way worse, however.

Oh shut up! TonyTiger is on the right track. Nice job, Tony!

I say we hire him and a few minions to flood the interwebs with glorious praise of Wilcox so we can fully mitigate the Titanic disaster of Knowlton's creation.

Wilcox is a good floor raiser and that's sort of what the Beavers need right now. I think he could do well there to get them to at least mediocre and maybe even better.

While they're at it, the Beavs really should hire Jim Knowlton to run their athletic department. He's an experienced Pac-12 administrator and really turned around Cal football and basketball's fortunes. Cal athletics really wouldn't be what it is today without Jim Knowlton's leadership.

If he plays bad enough teams he'll be average. Maybe the new Pac ? is bad. If it ever becomes good he'll be .333...not average. It's amazing to me that he's still considered an average coach. Oh wait, are we still trying to pump him up so OSU will hire him and ease our financial burden? Forget what I just wrote. He's great for Oregon State. I'm printing t-shirts with this.
