I thought about this while reading the Leading Candidates thread, but figured it deserved it's own thread.
  • Who are good candidates to be on Ron's selection committee?
  • Do you think he's considering Tedford?

Yes, good question, and focus.

Jack Clark was part of the committee headed by Steve Gladstone that selected Tedford, he would be an excellent candidate, as would JT himself.

Gladstone is retired at 84, might be living in the east coast, his last two gigs being with Yale and the USN IIRC.

IMO DeSean would be a great candidate to include on the committee. He's not a serious contender this time around, but would be great to have his voice in the mix as a Cal legend, NFL standout, and rising star coach

Former Cal football coaches who have done it and can be in the committee discussion about whether a specific candidate can be successful at Cal. Tedford is obviously one of those, but he's not the only one. Even coaches who didn't win at Cal should be considered -- if one of those guys thinks, "Candidate X would get ground up here for the same reasons I did," Rivera should hear that input.

Delicate situation because he is a legitimate candidate (we disagree here) and would feel slighted.

I believe that Tedford would be an obvious candidate as a member of the selection committee. I don't believe that his health would permit him to return as coach, however the benefit of his wisdom and experience would be invaluable. He and Snyder are the only coaches in the last 40 years to have had any sustained success. Especially since Lupoi is considered a leading candidate. Like so many others, I have decidedly mixed feelings about that potential eventuality. Yes, I want a coach who can lead meaningful and sustained improvement, but what he did on his way out the door was reprehensible and underhanded, and I have difficulty letting it slide. It doesn't square with the type of person RR and the University SAY they want to choose. So I would like to give Tedford the opportunity to share his thoughts on the matter, since he was the one most directly affected by Lupoi's exit. If he can explain why he would support Lupoi's appointment as HC, that would go a long way in my moderating my own opinion. Finally, looking back, Mariucci's one year tenure yielded a surprisingly potent offense, and almost no defense, same as Dykes. The Holmoe/Setencich and Wilcox teams had solid defenses, and largely inept offenses. Tedford's teams were in large part much more balanced, and therefore successful. Regardless of which side of the football the new coach specializes in, Cal needs a coach who will build a solid roster on both sides of the ball. If they can't, then this cycle will repeat itself in a few years.

Well, they better hurry up because some of the possible candidates for head coach at CAL have already been taken.

It would be fine to hear what some former coaches have to say, but I wouldn't put a tremendous amount of stock in it because each coach generally has their own agendas, biases for and against certain individuals, and loyalty toward their own coaching tree.

Lots of input from lots of different stakeholders with varied backgrounds will help lead to the best choice.

i would think they assembled a committee by now. Why would they wait?

Tedford proved at Cal and at Fresno St that a quick turnaround (even without a huge roster turnover as would be the case now) is possible. Him or people with that skill set would be great additions to this committee!

Has Cal usually had search/selection committees for coaches? I would think there really isn't enough time to have that formal a process.

Decisions "by committee" are rarely inspired and/or out of the box thinking. Committees avoid risk, and generally return "the least objectionable" outcome. I, for one, would like to see a bold choice on a high potential candidate. If it blow up in our faces, so be it - it can't be any worse than what we've had over the last 15 years.

The Committee is just a group of knowledgeable people who will advise Rivera. He will do whatever the hell he wants, whether it's to follow the committee's input or not.

Being a University there will naturally be a committee but their role will be validating Rivera's decision not picking candidates

He already knows who he wants.

I suspect you're right. I just hope he makes a public announcement soon.

RR might well need a back-up choice and even a back-up-to-the-back-up.

I'm glad RR is not using a search firm but relying on a "committee" seems like it could significantly slow the process.

RR is the GM. He needs to own this hire. It's his decision. Whoever he hires has to be on board with RR being his boss

Better move fast if he needs backup choices. Some of the coaches who would have been obvious backup or contingency choices have already lined up their next job.

FFS, it's not "relying". It's incorporating.
