All you 'Never Tosh-ers' crack me up. If he lands some top recruits and leads us to an ACC championship game do any of you really believe you won't cheer for that team and enjoy it just because he's at the helm? If he ends up being the coach that saves us from relegation out of power football then 20 years from now instead of looking back on his tenure with joy and pride will you be saying "yea but he betrayed us that one time" or will you say "he messed up but he made up for it and I'm glad we got him back"?

Maybe one or two of you genuinely mean it or just prefer to be miserable. As for me, I just want Cal football to be successful and I hope that he's the guy to get us there. If he delivers than I have zero qualms about welcoming him back and celebrating his successes in the blue and gold

Since this post will be trotted out at some point in the future, by one side or the other, for the record...

Hiring Tosh is a terrible mistake.

I won't be happy to eat crow, on the eve of our first NC Playoff game. I will be sad that that is what it took to get us there.

The odds of that happening aren't very high. More likely than not I would expect middling results early on then poorer ones well into his tenure, unless he manages to pull in very capable coordinators. A Tosh tenure will likely result in an improvement in blue chip HS recruiting but not a given that he and his staff will do a better job of evaluating portal talent and developing players' potential.

There is a gap between platitudes about "hating to lose", "being high energy" and having the full skill set required to build a football program from the ground up.

That's not the point though. Regardless of whether you believe Tosh has the leadership qualities and/or X's & O's capabilities to be a successful head coach, in this hypothetical where he *is* a success then how many of the people who claim they would never support him would, in fact, get behind him. That's all I was saying, not litigating his qualifications, his potential, or the likelihood that he reaches that ceiling

I think people should own to opinions so i will say it here..i am tosh skeptical as i would be with any first time hc....a job that comes down to hiring and managing a staff. I hope $$ and the talent that comes offsets and he is able to build a culture of excellence. He could. I just feel that it is a risk with downsides and hope to eat crow if he proves me wrong. It has absolutely nothing to do with toshgate.....and all about the challenges faced by many coordinators making the jump

Respect the owning.
Fact: Tosh or (any first time HC who might be hired) will be the first in college football to have a former NFL HC as his boss.

From a big picture and historical perspective, our two best coaches in my lifetime as a Cal fan were Snyder and Tedford. Both hires the result of a fairly intensive search. Snyder did have some HC history at Utah State before he went to the Rams as RB coach. Both were home run hires. Gilby was a risky hire IIRC by Bockrath. Holmoe was another rushed hire after Mooch bailed. Dykes was probably the most qualified HC hire I've seen in terms of "prior" HC experience.

Where would Tosh fit if he gets the nod? If you use the prior HC experience metric, he's as risky as Tedford or Holmoe or Gilby and more risky than Snyder or Dykes.

I trust Ron and I trust the metrics and criteria he and Lyons have developed - to ensure that this is a wise roll of the dice.
I don't have the football managerial experience or coaching experience to predict the "odds of success" for Tosh. This is Cal. We have historical program issues and the perception of our program is just at bad. But we have new leadership. So I'm cautiously optimistic - particularly if that leadership is accessing new sources of donations and revenue.
