After the debacle this season in SD, I said to myself that if Cal ever plays there in the future, I will take one for the team and not make the short drive from L.A. My record with Cal in SD is 1-6, starting with the '95 game.

While it makes perfect sense, the Hawaii Bowl v. Hawaii would be so lame.

There are recruits to be had. It's a great opportunity to strengthen the pipeline.

Including retaining Sagapolutele.

If playing in Hawaii helps us retain JKS, then so be it.

But the location of our bowl game will likely have little effect on whether he stays or goes.

We are the same here in Long Beach. Even drove home rather than use the hotel reservation after the Poinsettia Bowl.
Bring back bottled beer and cigars at CMS. Should get us back in the Rose Bowl!

1. How did Rolo fix the false start penalties in one week? We had only ONE false start. A couple games ago we had something like eight.

Amusing story there. Until about a week ago this was very unclear even to Cal itself who thought we were likely to be heading back to Shreveport. I told them this was wrong and we had an extended debate on the Pac 12 tie-ins. The reason this was a mess was because the Independence Bowl itself in their bowl guide said that they had the Pac 12 tie in. Which they do not (it's Big-12 vs. Conference USA this year). They just hadn't updated their guide from the prior year. Cal got on the phone with them and pointed out to their error and they were pretty shocked.

In terms of where we are going to go it will be either Hawaii, Holiday or Sun. Holiday is expressing some strong interest so we shall see. Selfishly I would love to see us in Hawaii. And I have very, very unpleasant associations with Cal playing football in San Diego. But it's still going to beat being in El Paso. We will see how this shakes out, but my gut says Holiday.

I would love the Holiday Bowl. That would be a fun game but it does feature the ACC as the other opponent as does the Sun. Typically these bowls try to avoid pitting conference opponents against each other, but with these conferences so big now you can easily find 2 teams from the same conference that did not play each other during the season. I have seen projections for Pitt in the Holiday. Cal did not play them.

With Cal winning that last game and JKS being a drawing card it is possible for sure to have either the Holiday or Sun allow Cal to jump an 8 win UW or ASU. The bowls can select a team with less wins if there is just 1 game difference.

I get that Hawaii is a great destination and there are recruiting reasons Cal would like that bowl. But if that does not happen the Holiday Bowl would be a really nice game for the program.

Cal vs. Clemson in the Holiday Bowl. My gut.

Rematch!

That was a great game. Clemson had a highly touted D lineman who, it was predicted, would tear us apart. We ran one wide play after another, so that by the 4th his tongue was hanging out.

This year, Clemson isn't what it used to be. We would be competitive with them.

I went to the game!!!! Such a great trip .. going to Disney World, Sea World, and Universal Studios and then capping it off with a win vs highly favored Clemson with Chester McGlockton (RIP).

At the time, I was unsure about going and thought I will just try to go to the next New Years Bowl game. Of course, who knew it wouldn't be for at least another 30+ years at least. Sigh

So glad I made the trip … good times…. good times

Another attractive option instead of Cal for the Hawaii Bowl is Hawaii vs Army (due to military bases there and the Army HC is also a Hawaii alum). But I think Cal would be first preference.

A big part of what I loved about that game was that the script was clearly that we were there as a convenient team for Clemson to slaughter. That became clear when the crowd was asked to remain standing after the National Anthem for Clemson's Alma Mater (of course, our section all sat) and that the stadium had a lot of orange in evidence. The irny there was that Clemson chose to wear purple jerseys with the orange helmets (I was told later it had some connection to our seeming inability to beat Washington?). We didn't have the good manners expected of us, and beat Clemson handily.

The only games I ever enjoyed as much that in person were Joe Kapp's final game as head coach and the 2004 Big Game (the only Cal game I ever got to see with my dad - Cal BA '55 MA '59).

I hope Sebasta's gut feeling is correct re: the Holiday Bowl. Barring that outcome -- and having never visited El Paso in my life -- would El Paso and the Sun Bowl be that bad? I have visions of wearing a wide-brimmed sombrero, enjoying cerveza and Tex/Mex, and watching one of the "historic" bowl games.

The Sun Bowl is the 4th oldest college bowl game (after the Rose, Orange, and Sugar), and I like the way the Sun Bowl stadium is tucked into the craggy barren hillsides on the UTEP campus. Granted, I may be idealizing El Paso way too much from listening to an old Marty Robbins country & western gunslinger ballad.

only bad things happen in SD. I think maybe one time in my life as a cal fan we won down there. generally horrific things happen.

Saw us take out Texas A&M and their 12th man about 2009 or so....They scored first and we just nailed them. Twelfth man rushing for the exits at the end of the 3rd Q

Correct. The 2006 Holiday Bowl win over Texas A&M is the only game the Bears have won in San Diego.

That win vs A&M was pretty juicy tho. Their fan base felt a little similar to Clemson's back in the day, in that we were sort of dismissed. You know, "they don't really play FOOTBALL in California like we do down here", etc. I didn't have any bad interactions, but it felt like most of the fans were looking at us and saying, "oh bless your hearts..." in that syrupy, looking down on you way, but with a smile.

And then the Bears smashed the crap out of em

I was at the game. All the A&M fans I talked to were friendly and chatty, even though their team got crushed.

Texas, Ohio state, A&M, Ol Miss, SMU. All the fans were fine. PAC12 closeness, and histories sometimes caused problems.

Long distance traveling fans of all fanbases tend to be older, more worldly, less drunk and more sedate.
