My other predictions that got buried under dump trucks of criticism on BI:

1. My contention after seeing him as a Coug frosh that Klay would be a good NBA player; and

2. During his 1st Cal season when I said Goff would go in the First Round of NFL draft.

Mendoza has an uphill battle if he stays a Raider, an organization that suffers from terminal institutional rot.
If Nando had remained a Cal Bear, you jilted girlfriends would have softer opinions.

1) Our opinions are pretty soft.

2) It is nice that you have had two correct predictions in the last 12+ years. You should work for ESPN.

I put the stopwatch on him a few times last night. He had 3 seconds of protection several times….which is a lot. He won't get that much when 1st string pass rushers play against the Raiders' O line.

I still have faith in him and his future. The kid is a winner. You can't teach that.

"Just a winner" apparently = doesn't win until he's on a roster with 8 draft picks, including 6 on offense.

The Raiders made a very poor evaluation on Mendoza, particularly as a scheme fit. Most of his production came on shotgun RPOs. Very little experience under center, and even less in wide-zone, heavy PA. He doesn't recognize pressure pre-snap, takes a lot of sacks (sacks are a QB stat). So when you have him have his back to the defense he's going to struggle.

Plus his corny **** is going to grow real old around a bunch of grown men professionals when they're going 3-14.

he's a really smart dude so I'm confident he'll learn the pre snap reads. The Raiders had ~20 big holes on the team that they needed to fill, including all 5 Offensive lineman. They got one. So, yeah, any QB will struggle with a weak OL.

Except he is doing worse against second stringers than Cousins is doing against first stringers.

The Raiders would have been much better off trading their #1 pick for a bunch of top draft picks. Mendoza is a decent prospect with a good potential to becoming a serviceable NFL QB, but he's hardly a generational talent.

yes, and that is exactly why they brought Cousins in -- to Start. And let the Rook watch and learn, while getting mop-up duty. Win 5-6 games this year, and draft a couple of OL studs.

Yep, pre-season rosters can have up to 90 players before being reduced to 53 for the regular season, so a lot of 3rd, 4th, maybe even 5th string guys are being played so coaches can evaluate them in a game situation.

You're indicting a rookie with 3 pre-season games for not outperforming a guy with 14 years of experience in the league, mostly starting who took almost all the practice snaps with the first team because the Raiders always planned to start Cousins.

Well, I certainly hope he gets a lot better and outperforms the QB who was cut by the Falcons to start other mediocre QBs like Penix and Tua.

Joe Montana was terrible his first year and didn't beat out Steve Deberg until late in his second year
Tom Brady was atrocious and was 4th string, kept on the roster because of potential
Aaron Rodgers was terrible his first two years and didn't start until year 4
Jared Goff started most of the season and was awful
Josh Allen started and was horrible for two seasons.
Patrick Mahomes didn't start until year 2.

Tom Brady specifically insisted that Mendoza was not going to start out of the gate and brought in Cousins to manage the transition, because Brady knows in most cases starting a rookie at QB is bad for everyone. That is smart. Mendoza is not a physical specimen. His strengths are his work ethic and his ability to understand and read defenses. Similar to Montana, Brady, and Rodgers, his strengths take some experience to develop when you move up a level. The Raiders have been clear since before he stepped foot on the practice field that he was not going to start game 1. He is doing exactly what they expected of him.

I don't know if he's going to be a great NFL QB. What I do know is that he made you look like an idiot for your dumb, hate based takes last year, and that you have not learned from that experience. No one with any sense would be judging any rookie QB based on 3 preseason games.

#7 pick Josh Allen's horrible first season was better statistically passing than Mendoza has been passing this preseason. On top of that, unlike Mendoza, Josh Allen is a true dual threat QB. Also, other draftees are killing it this preseason. Hopefully, Mendoza does as well as you think he will. Most of my criticism of Mendoza has been for how he left Cal and it hasn't been too over the top. It will be okay. He makes some really nice throws here and there. He may do well in the NFL if he can manage to get a dominating line like the geriatric support he had at Indiana. He probably will never get that however (like almost all NFL QBs).

Allen's stats were very similar to Mendoza's and you are comparing someone who had 16 games under center to work through things to someone who has had about one full games worth of work at this level. And to paraphrase Allen Iverson, It's preseason, man. No one is playing full on, using the full playbook with a full contingent of starters at any point.

Zero rookie QB's are starting this year.

I never said he would do well or not in the NFL. I said he would do well at Indiana. He was an excellent college QB and that was obvious when he left Cal. When you try to claim a guy sucks and he wins the Heisman, you already showed your bias.

The only thing I am claiming is that judging any QB based on 3 preseason games is stupid and is coming from the same desire to tear the guy down that lead to last year's "expert" commentary. In his first 3 preseason games, Aaron Rodgers was 9-19 for 53 yards 0 TD's and an INT. He did okay.

Please note that prior to you taking issue with my "predictions," all I did was recap his poor preseason performance and state

"Hopefully, he learns to pass to "his boys" and doesn't get insecure when Cousins starts."

He has had a horrendous preseason. I stand by that. Please stop attributing things I did not say to me. And, yes, I am skeptical that he will have a lot of success in the NFL. As the #1 pick, he will have ample opportunities to succeed, and we shall see how it goes. FYI, Allen's first season stats do not reflect someone who had 16 games under center. Those would be his second season stats. Thanks.

Think what might have been. If he had stayed, and most of the transfers had never left, eight wins would have been possible, and the Square Jaw Dynasty would have continued to flourish.

Sure, eight wins would have been possible, but six wins would have been way more likely - just because Wilcox is Wilcox.

"As the #1 pick, he will have ample opportunities to succeed…"

Jim Plunkett won the Heisman and was drafted # 1 in the 1971 NFL Draft. He then proceeded to get the sh@it kick out of him on successive horrendous teams with no O lines (the Patriots and 49ers). He then ends up as a washed up QB on the Raiders, where another broken down warrior, Dan Pastorini, was starting until he broke his leg. Plunkett ends up with a good O line and wins 2 SB.

Being on the Raiders could be a career ender for Nando. Cousins is going to be knocked out of the box with injuries a few games in and then Nando will take over. If he doesn't get away from the gravitational force of Blond Moe, he is probably toast. If he ever gets a good O line he will be a good NFL QB.

*I wish Brady had been on a team for 5 years where he got his sh@it pushed in.

Plus his corny **** is going to grow real old around a bunch of grown men professionals when they're going 3-14.

he's a really smart dude so he'll learn pre snap reads. The Raiders had ~20 big holes on the team that they needed to fill, including all 5 Offensive lineman. They got one OL. So, yeah, any QB will struggle.

Except he is doing worse against second stringers than Cousins is doing against first stringers.

My point was you were comparing a guy's season stats over 16 games. You'd expect a guy to get better with experience, no? He literally had 10 times more experience by the end. In game one of the regular season he was 6 for 15. Yeah, he didn't spend the whole season with more experience. Just almost the entirety of it. If I need to spell it out for you, Game 1 he had all preseason. Game 2 he had all preseason plus 1 game. Game 3 he had all of preseason plus two games. etc. I said he had 16 games to work through things. Not that he had 16 games experience game one.

That's fine.

Las Vegas Raiders rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza finished his 2026 NFL preseason completing 25-of-45 passes (55.6%) for 240 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.

Hopeful, he improves and becomes a good NFL QB.

Raiders with a solid opening drive of the NFL season.

Cousins is 9/9 for 64 yards with a TD pass to Bech. Up 7-0 and about to get the ball back.
