Syracuse is a deadly trap game

Last night was a relatively high emotion game. Tosh's HC debut after lots of hype, first game vs UCLA since 2023, huge amped crowd with national stage (thanks to no other P4 vs P4 games in the time slot) and a game flow which had us rally impressively from a 2 TD first half hole up to the point where we appeared ready to take the lead only to implode in the 4th and ultimately let ourselves be blown out.

Now we go on what is close to the longest roadie a team other than Hawaii (and its opponents) can take against a team that was bad last season but is presumably feeling awesome after a 66-3 season opening win (yeah, over New Hampshire but 63 point wins over anyone tend to raise morale).

All of the talk here is about what went wrong last night as opposed to what we're facing next and if the team is also stuck on last night, they may lack full focus for what is a critical game under difficult conditions. We folded in the face of sudden adversity vs UCLA and if we don't prove tougher and more resilient this week, our guys will have a long plane ride home staring 0-2 in the face.

This is a trap game for Syracuse, not us.

You have to have at least one W to get trapped.

If Cal beats Syracuse, Wagner is the trap game.

Definitely not a trap game. If we had beaten UCLA, then yes, Syracuse might be a trap game, but losing, you can bet the team will practice hard and be motivated and the coaches will sharpen their pencils. Not saying we will win, but If we lose it won't be because we are overconfident or overlooked them, (looking ahead to Wagner?).

for what it is, Wagner is a good team. good fundamentals and never give up spirit of the underdog. But, first 'cuse.

We are banged up pretty good and Syracuse is favored by 3.5 at home for a cross country game. I hope JKS, Swinney, and TE Thomas can play. This is not the definition of a trap game and if we pull it out it bodes well for the season in my opinion. If we lose close it will suck but won't tell us much about the team we have yet. A blowout loss would be devastating.

No there are not...Cal should be favored by 35+ pts regardless of the Cuse game.

Wagner lost to fellow FCS Robert Morris 28-7. Wagner had 22 yards rushing and 75 yards passing.

Sagarin ranks Wagner as #259 out of 266 teams in the nation and Robert Morris, who they lost badly to, as #215. If we played right now, Sagarin says Cal would be 44 point favorites to win at home over Wagner.

This is not a good game for anyone. If we have to play a patsie, there are teams nearby that we wouldn't have to pay, might bring some fans and would attract more Cal fan interest.

Now THAT'S a trap game! Also will be interesting what with how we fared against them last season and poster socaltownie always boosting whatever SDSU does well, including suggesting their football coach might have been a good fit here.
