2 good QBs going at it. Lions are lucky to play at Buffalo early in the season.

Pitt-Cuse is also on tonight, would be a good game to assess our future opponent and see if Cuse is an ACC BDW this year or if our road win was solid.
.

Overall a fairly depressing night of football. Lions are not good - the defense is atrocious. Syracuse also looks like garbage and that coach looks lost, so does not bode well for Cal. On the bright side, did well on fantasy football so far this week thanks to Goff and Laporta!

Johnson took a 5-12 Bears team to 11-6 last season.

When a WR in the NFL has no defender within 10 yards of him when he makes a catch….HOUSTON WE A PROBLEM!

Soon to be our Lord and Master (who will be probing you 24/7 for a month before it discards your husk) analyzes it as follows:

To fix their struggling defense after allowing 61 points through two games, the Detroit Lions must clean up fundamental run-fit errors, dial back reckless blitzing, and get healthy in the secondary.

Key Fixes for the Lions

Defense
Fix Run Fits and Discipline:
Clean up alignment busts where multiple defenders occupy the same gap, which allowed the Buffalo Bills to rush for 203 yards.

Balance the Pass Rush:
Stop over-pursuing and hunting for sacks at the expense of disciplined edge containment against mobile quarterbacks.

Resist Over-Blitzing:
Scale back heavy blitz rates called by defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard that leave the backend exposed to explosive plays.

Await Health and Reinforcements: Welcome back star safety Brian Branch and other key injured defensive contributors around the Week 6 bye to stabilize coverage.

Capitalize on a Soft Schedule:
Use upcoming games against more manageable quarterbacks (like Geno Smith and Bryce Young) to rebuild confidence and execute self-scout corrections.

It sure does. That's why the decisions in the 2023 NFC championship game will continue to haunt them for years to come. They should've gone for the points on every one of those fourth downs. Sadly I think that was Goff's last best chance for a Super Bowl ring.

Goff has another solid game as the Lions beat the Jets.

Go Goff! Go Lions!

…..and Geno Smith had himself a game too in the defeat: 321 yards, 3 TD 0 INT
(…in other news Mariota had his first 3 TD game in 4 years to beat Seahawks. Sam had 4 TD but his 2 INT both resulted in a Commander TD ….. one of the INT was a pick 6)

Thank God Goff was well trained by Sonny to understand that with a bad defense he needs to score every time.

I didn't get to watch the game, but I see that Goff and the Lions took care of business. Here he is punching it in:

He's the coach you have that you'd run thru brick walls for if you are lucky enough. Can Tosh be even close?

He took a pretty good hit on his right shoulder there, I bet he is feeling it today. Lions have a bye week so he will be 100% in 2 weeks.

The game did NOT start out well for Goff. This was the type of game that would historically snowball for Goff and result in 3-4 interceptions and a really really bad stat line. Looking only at passing plays:

First drive:

12 yard sack
Punt

Second drive:

8 yard sack
5 yard pass
Incompletion
Punt

Third drive:

Incompletion
9 yard sack fumble (recovered by Lions)
2 yard pass
Punt

Through three drives Goff had a line of:

7 passing yards, 50% completion, -29 yards on sacks, resulting in 3 punts.

After that the next 7 drives resulted in 6 touchdowns and 1 field goal...with the following stat line:

17/26 (65% completion rate)
264 yards (10.15 yards per attempt)
3 td's
1 rushing td
0 sacks

And 1 punt...at the end of the game...after 3 straight runs.

Was great to see him pick himself up after a bad start.

Another point about yesterday's NFL action is that we had 3 Cal QBs playing, as Mendoza took some reps. Has this ever happened before?

Also, both Goff and Rodgers are in the top 5 TDs thrown so far this season:

Rank
Player
Team
Passing Touchdowns
1
Brock Purdy
San Francisco 49ers
13
2
Kirk Cousins
Las Vegas Raiders
12
2
Jared Goff
Detroit Lions
12
4
Joe Burrow
Cincinnati Bengals
11
5
Trevor Lawrence
Jacksonville Jaguars
10
5
Jordan Love
Green Bay Packers
10
5
Aaron Rodgers
Pittsburgh Steelers
10
