UCLA just made all tickets to football and basketball free FREE for students ! ? We got students paying for combo passes and that's why so many games were so empty last year for football and basketball. Virginia, UNC, (SMU with march madness on the line) ! And this is UCLA's new AD doing this ! Ron you have to figure it out if you know that we won't win all these games !

good time to do it when the program on upswing, get them hooked on the good stuff then they will return as paying customers when they graduate.

It's a joke that schools make this all about money. Good for UCLA - athletics is supposed to be about personal growth, and the entertainment for students is a good thing, too.

Making athletic events free (especially FB and BB) is a COMPLETE NONBRAINER.

The main business model for a school like Cal is to groom future whales and megawhales into Cal fans, a process that takes place while they are at Cal.

We have about a dozen billionaire grads, and I believe none are Cal Athletics donors.

As well we need future participation and attendance from as many alums as possible, currently that participation rate is, I would guess, under 10% among Cal alumni living in CA.

Some data:

  • UCLA has a massive attendance problem at the Rose Bowl, in particular student attendance, which as you can imagine is impacted by the distance from campus to the Rose Bowl and until this season, a bad football team
  • Relative to Cal, their issues are significantly more material
  • Cal not only sold out their student ticket allocation, it was way oversold
  • The university charges $125 for all football games, priority access to basketball games and free admission to every other sport on campus
  • Every research report I've read is clear that asking for a nominal price increases attendance, commitment and perceived value from the customer

At the least we shouldn't lock out students with a "sold out" if there are empty seats. Sounds like that may be the policy already in part but it seems the most obvious. Maybe even reducing the pass price too even if that means re-crediting holders with student credit. Anything to get students, or even other young people in the Bay to CMS

That kind of reminds me; at the UCLA game, there was a pretty sizable section (about 15 benches or so) between the Band and the Student Section that was sectioned off completely the entire game for the Bearettes to perform on.

I'm not casting blame on the Bearettes, because I don't think they necessarily requested the space, but isn't there somewhere else equally (or more) promiment they can perform rather than taking up 15 rows? Feels like we could have brought in more students to fill up that section.

Not quibble but there is a wierd financial aid quirk. If you imposed a fee for the same amount raise (30 a semester? 20?) It would be eligible to be offset by aide. But the student pass is just straight cash out of pocket and competes against food for full aide kids.

So you impose the fee across all undergrads, make the tickets free and then lotto off or otherwise ration the tickets. No one loses money and it doesnt create trade offs against other needs for students on aid.

That's a fair response.
Overflow for students should be allowed at football games. There are often empty sections and it would be better to fill them.

Then let's talk about basketball. I've not been to Haas in a good while but I used to catch 10 games a year and there were (most) games when Cal should be paying people to enter.
Recruiting is different today, but no doubt playing in front of fans is a factor!

If you want to say that adding a value to a ticket is going to have an impact on actual attendance then include several coupons to be exchanged for seats with tuition. Just a thought, I'm sure there are others.
Fill the Haas!
