The depth of summerville's incompetence almost makes any hire seem like the right one. He was mostly a mountain West guy? We'll have to wait and see but as I said above anything's better than nothing. Lol.

What about blocking? Or are we going to continue to see QB and running back injuries pile up while we can't do passing or running plays? Calls to mind the expressions, "shuffling chairs on the deck of the Titanic" or "fiddling while Rome burns."

24 second half points w a backup QB vs 7 first half points via one big play.

"We talked about how we want to do things [vs UNLV], how we're going to do things, and then we didn't do them, so we most certainly had to change," Rivera said....

"...I mean, our initial play caller [Sommerville] is a young play caller, a guy who's got a lot to learn still. Very good football coach, understands the game, but he's got some things to learn....and and then ultimately having someone that's had a lot of experience calling plays in Pat McCann. He's been a former offensive coordinator, around three years of experience. You know, Coach Jeff Tedford highly recommended to him to me. Ron Gould highly recommended him to me. Did a great job on his interview. He was already a coordinator for us, passing game coordinator, and I think that sparked us."

My first question was "who the hell is Pat McCann?" He has waaaay more experience than Somerville and it was under Tedford. I do still wonder what happened with Rolo? Here's a blurb from his bio:

McCann has been a collegiate coach for over 15 years and spent the 2025 season at Oregon State where he served as the wide receivers coach.

Prior to his time in Corvallis, McCann spent three years at Fresno State as the Bulldog's wide receivers coach and was later elevated to offensive coordinator where he held the post for two seasons prior to leaving.

McCann and Gould landed hidden gem 6'3" WR Keelan Doss from Alameda, who broke many school receiving records and spent four years in the NFL. McCann coached 4 years at UC Davis.

Sports Illustrated: "With Cal passing game coordinator and former Fresno State offensive coordinator Pat McCann calling the plays after halftime Saturday, the Bears scored 24 points in the second half of the 39-31 loss to the Rebels. It was the most points scored by Cal's offense in any half this season against FBS competition, and the Bears did it with a backup quarterback, Jackson Brousseau, who played the entire second half after Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele was sidelined with a concussion...."

"...Lupoi described the Bears' offensive strategizing during Saturday's game in the following way while speaking to the media on Tuesday:

"Drawing up things on the sideline, getting on the IPad, maniac energy, trying to put things in. Putting a receiver in the backfield, run a play we did not practice a single time for an explosive touchdown."

"Lupoi was referring to the 53-yard touchdown reception by fifth-string, walk-on running back Carson Perry-Smith in the third quarter that got Cal back in the game."

"Pat McCann dressed that all up," Lupoi said."

So we had an offensive coordinator under Tedford on our staff. Hmmm...

But why was he no longer a WR coach?
