Sometimes getting a right handed throw makes a difference. Receivers are used to the spin

Sure a lot of *****ing and moaning after a win considering how many players are hurt.
Go Bears!

I cannot recall after any Cal win feeling as deflated as I am right now, we got favorable calls all the way the last 90 seconds
We got some bad calls too.
Yeah some but that last drive was ridiculous

We often lose games like this, nice to win one.

I thought McCann was great after starting out bad through most of the first half. I thought Hutchings was great with the exception of going to Hail Mary defense too soon, though i doubt that play only took 2 seconds off the clock to get 20 yards. Tosh's game management decision making was poor.

Any long suffering Cal fan knew in their heart that this was going to be another moral victory loss. Cal loses games like that 10-10 times. I'M ECSTATIC!

First half 3rd down play calls left a lot to be desired. They had almost no shot of giving us first downs and extending the drives even if blocked correctly. Second half was excellent.

I don't know who's responsible for game management but we have to stop doing squibs at the end, we're just giving the other teams offense the ball at nearly midfield every time. Have faith in your KO coverage unit.

Stanford gave up another 58 today. Ouch.

In fairness refs tend to swallow whistles at the end of games like that. Dbs can face guard in college, it's a bad practice though, we should be teaching our guys to turn and find the ball.

Yeah didn't we get a penalty called against us on the last drive for 15 yards?

Can I just say how stupid the targeting rule is...I'm sorry, Tuitele may have 'targeted' by the rule, but the spirit of the rule, no way. To me there has to be some common sense on the field and say was there some kind of intent to injure.

Not to mention the bad calls (especially running on first down for negative yards) that put us into third long in the first place.

Once we started changing up and completng passes in the middle of the field off play action for big gains on first down the offense started rolling with tosses outside, passes underneath and then eventually even the run up the middle opened up. Plus lots of outright trickery. I also like that once we started moving the ball we went tempo, putting the defense back on their heals.

I'd guess at least another season, but they may be forced to make some very tough decisions in a realignment scenario.

Isnt there another rule for "helmet to helmet" contact? Because he absolutely lead with his forearm.

I think it has the best intentions in the world, but sometimes the head arrives first on a play like that. It's not intentional, but it happens.

Maybe, it's just these guys are flying on the field and helmets or arms or whatever can accidentally touch the helmet with no intent to injure the person. I mean offensive linemen go helmet to helmet every play...and we understand that's just normal play with no intent.

14-3, with a naty. Now that the frauds texas and oregon have been exposed, the path is clear.

I saw lots of garbage refereeing this game. Endless holding non-calls. Completely missed a VT targeting on that last drive before half time. Borderline calls that were inconsistently called against us and not VT.

Personally thought that the last play was bang bang and only looked like PI in slow motion replay. Either way, I've seen so many garbage bad calls on us or non calls benefit our opponents, I'm not going to waste any time bemoaning a close call on that last play.

Just finished watching the Cal game and a couple of things of note. The play calling was noticeably better. We used the run to keep Va. Tech honest which allowed for a mixture of short passes that acted as runs as well as some downfield throws. The defense had a couple of untimely penalties and had a couple of instances where they were late getting off the field and looked a little confused getting lined up before Va Tech hiked the ball. The offense still had some dropped balls which they need to get corrected. The key is the play calling was better and they closed.

Refs like to swallow their whistles on the final play so it's gotta be super egregious to draw a flag and it wasn't.

Too many times the defense is not wrapping up. I see too many players just thinking brute force and impact will knock the player down only to be surprised to see they didn't achieve their goal and the offensive player goes for another 10 yards. There has to be better technique

McCann with trickery twice? Gutsy calls, great timing.

FTR, I read up on McCann several times years ago (WR coach at Davis) and observed him from afar on Social media, interviews, etc. The non-football observation that hit me was that he appeared to really connect authentically with players. He came off as youthful and energetic. Granted, he was young then.

His wife was doing an Instagram thing, and he had a prime time WR in humble star Keelan Doss (4 years in the NFL). So at Davis he got to learn at a successful FCS program who's coaching tree and philosophies fed Oregon (Bellotti, Alioti) and Boise State (Hawkins, Peterson). I'm sure he interfaced a lot with longtime HC Bob Biggs.

Congrats to Coach McCann.

I was watching from the stadium but I swear it looked like the forearm led and landed first. I didn't even see significant helmet contact but I'd certainly take another look at it if there's a clip of the play.

I'm willing to admit when targeting might be warranted but that looked cleaner to me than either UNLV targeting call.

Honestly, a lot of the best routes today were available previously, but JKS wouldn't make the throw. Especially over the middle

I was at the game so I missed most of the chatter in this thread. At the game we were just dumbfounded how poorly the last 18 seconds of the game were handled, starting with the kickoff, and ending with that bizarro lining up of the players at the goal line, leaving a huge swath of land unoccupied and letting them easily get down to the seven yard line.

Anyway, sometimes after an interesting game I'll go to fan sites of other teams that might have been paying attention to our game (for example, future opponents) to see what they had to say. I just went to a Virginia forum, and they were delighted that VT lost again in controversial fashion. But boy did they notice how badly Cal handled the end of the game. I took a screenshot of some of their comments--they're pretty brutal and deserved:

I'm sure they don't teach that, but it's lazy and there needs to be accountability. You do a half assed job at work and you get fired. Same should be true with NIL. Earn it.
