According to Google this is why Tosh left Alabama

Tosh Lupoi left Alabama in January 2019 to become the defensive line coach for the Cleveland Browns after a complicated single season as Alabama's defensive coordinator: [1, 2, 3]

  • Struggles as Coordinator: Although promoted to defensive coordinator for the 2018 season, Lupoi faced internal concerns regarding in-game situational play-calling and adjustments.
  • In-Season Demotion: Head coach Nick Saban stripped Lupoi of play-calling duties during the 2018 season and handed them to co-defensive coordinator Pete Golding.
  • Need for Seasoning: Lupoi recognized he needed more time and experience ("seasoning") to develop as a coordinator.
  • Shift to Focus on Coaching: Moving to the NFL allowed him to focus solely on coaching the defensive line and learning without the heavy, split demands of college recruiting. [1, 2]

would be hilarious if Ron called a guy named Nick Saben, and not Saban, and the Saben guy just raved about Tosh on the call.

If Tosh needs some more seasoning:

I do recall that Saban did strip him of duties and Tosh did leave. Short leashes in places like Bama and Oregon

As I recall, after UW, Saban started him at the bottom doing game film. He had to work his way up from there.

Saban probably kept Tosh only for his recruiting and made him DC to placate him. But, that was 8 years ago before things were like they are today. Does a personality driven recruiter even matter anymore in this era of NIL and transfer portal

Supposedly Saban was consulted. RR is no dummy. He knows football and it's personnel far better than any of us .
Tosh is our head coach now. Digging up negatives about his past is futile and non-productive.

Furthermore, it's been 8 years. Are you the same, professionally, that you were 8 years ago? Or did you gain some experience and some wisdom in the time that elapsed?

We're all frustrated and maybe even angry. But to be honest, this kind of post doesn't do anything positive. (I fully recognize it's not the responsibility of social media to "be positive". But sometimes I think people get caught up in "piling on" when it has no benefit.)

We didn't have the luxury of getting a coach who learned on the way. We know coaching decisions are crucial to the one-score games that surely we needed to win this year ... But decided on this dude because of his charisma and optimism.

The post is helpful in that islt keeps pointing out that coaching is super important. Much more so than talent alone (see UCLA, see Wake Forest). You win a game or two that you should have no business winning along with the games you should always win. When you don't do either, you need to be canned immediately. We don't have the luxury of time.

And by canned. I realize he cannot be fired right now. We can strip him of play-calling and just focus on recruiting operations while he learns on the job. Get some competent coordinators and lose that pathetic o-line coach and we wouldn't have needed Tosh's 5* and 4* recruits to get to to 9 wins this year. Let us not make the same mistake in 2027. Coaching is of most importance! We can do more with less.

High School recruiting is still vital. Tosh was hired at Oregon mainly due to his recruiting prowess and not because he was viewed as some hot DC commodity. I'm surprised that Cal didn't do the same. Hire some promising up and comer (Like UCLA) and offer Tosh a co-DC position (minus the play calling role).

That will not be sufficient. A HC sets the tone for the entire team. If a HC has glaring deficiencies, those flaws will negate the qualities of even a good coordinator. Can anyone think of a case where a team succeeded and the HC was just a figurehead?

Some of us were calling for that, but others on this board (especially the "insiders") said that Tosh was a fait accompli. Now we're stuck with a HC whose understanding of Xs and Os is so atrocious that he is not even able to recognize when a coordinator understands Xs and Os and ended up hiring two who have notable and glaring holes in their understanding.

Most leaders are afraid to hire people who are more competent than they are because of their own insecurities. The best leaders do the opposite: they surround themselves with highly competent people who complement their strengths and make the entire team better. They're secure enough in their own abilities to let others shine.
The question is whether Tosh is that type of leader. I have my doubts.

You might be right, but he could also learn from his mistakes and make better decisions moving forward. The real test is whether he recognizes what hasn't worked and is willing to surround himself with more experienced, qualified people. At some point, though, potential has to translate into results.

The fact that Jordan Somerville is still employed while Oregon already moved on from Drew Mehringer speaks volumes about whether Lupoi learned from his mistakes.

It sends a message that this program isn't serious about wanting to get better. Great coaches make bad decisions and quickly pivot. Bad coaches obfuscate and pretend like everything is fine.

If what you said is true then why doesn't every program just demote the playcaller and swap them out? Only bad coaches and terrible programs do such shenanigans.

What matters is getting better, not "sending a message." If Somerville can help McCann in any way even just scouting the opposition, i'd rather have him do that than foing nothing on our dime.

From a quick AI search, not sure it would be "many". Todd Bowles and Dave Canales, the guys that hired him, have called him bright. Of course, both of those coaches are on the hot seat right now, so perhaps take that with a grain of salt. Doesn't look like any of the QBs he worked with or the QB coach he worked under, Thad Lewis, said anything. Of course, Ron Rivera, Coach Meathead, and the writers here all sang his praises. Looking at his career trajectory again, I remain shocked that he was named the OC. Guy has been an assistant to an assistant his whole career and suddenly Cal thinks he's ready to take over an entire offense? It's unbelievable. The same can be said about Hutchings - career assistant to assistant coach of some position group. Doesn't matter how bright these guys are, they were simply not ready for the roles they were thrown into.

Actually, it's 3 incredibly inexperienced coordinator hires.
You forgot Zach Tinker on Special Teams who had never been an ST coordinator.

He worked in "quality control" and as an "analyst" at Oregon with Tosh.
