I forget, I usually sneak a couple of small ones in but what is the policy? Allowed? With or without caps? It's going to be warm and I would imagine the half assed drinking fountain I used to use will be gone. Not going to pay $3.00 for a bottle of water.:chainsaw

Along as they haven't been opened, I'm pretty sure water bottles are allowed.

Bring your water bottle, just before getting to Checkpoint Charlie, take the cap off and put it in your pocket, go through Checkpoint Charlie and put the cap back on your bottle.

No. They are not allowed if there are caps (fear of missles...)

Last year at least, water bottles were allowed, if sealed. If already open, they had to be ditched. Did something change for this season?

I was told the last few seasons that it had to be closed to ensure that it was actually water...

if only there were a website that informed people about rules of the stadium. Wouldn't that be convenient?
(as i write this sarcastically it occurs to me i've never looked... is there one? I just assumed there wasn't because i've never stumbled upon anything useful like that on calbears.com)

throw a water bottle you buy at the game as well as one you bring in. Leave it unopened, as I did every game last year, and all I heard was "enjoy the game!"

Not a bad idea to have an 'extra' bottle cap in your pocket, though, just in case some ticket taker makes you open it at the gate!

But no mention of water bottle rules.

Given that there will probably be no drinking fountains, they ought to relax this rule, especially on the west Side

Can you also bring a backpack into the stadium? Maybe have the water bottle in it.

Last year it was OK to bring in water bottles. The current directive on the Cal Bears Site does not exclude them. I do not recall if the bottle was required to be sealed, so to be safe don't open it before entry. IIRC, the cost of a bottle of water inside the stadium was $4, so get it before entering. Some of us were asked to take a survey about the game day experience and in addition to the cheesy ads, I mentioned that the cost of water (given no or few drinking fountains) was too high. We'll see if our comments were given serious consideration.

Yes you can bring a water bottle inside a back pack-which will be inspected- and to second what others have said: if it is sealed I never had a problem

That's weird. Last year at the maryland game, they were making us toss our water bottles or at least empty the containers with water in them. Had to toss perfectly good water and then pay up the wazoo for more water inside.

In odd years, you can bring them, in but the caps need to be off so they can't be used as 'missiles'. In even years, the caps need to be on to be sure they are really water.

My trick is to bring a transparent backpack which I found at Walmart. It gets a chuckle from people around me when the attendant asks me to open it. Sort of embarrasing for the checker.

You are correct, it HAS been $4.00 the past couple of years (so maybe it's even more this year...

Which leads to the question: Since everybody knows the cost for them is probably about 50 cents, why the high mark-up? (I know, I know, because they can.)

But aren't there LOTS of folks like me who really resent being gouged like that and thus bring in our own? Wouldn't they be better off -- even in terms of profit -- by charging, say, $2.50? Besides the making-it-up-on-volume angle, there's no telling the long-term negative effects when your best customers feel like they're being gouged.

Mostly because it is crap but secondarily because of the price. When there is a 5 pm game, I have bought food, but only then.

Evidently the people that run the concessions control the prices, not Cal. Cal gave them the concession because their bid gives Cal the most money out of the deal.At least, thats how it has been in years past.We are in a recession, people are making LESS money. Lower the Dam price!

We were told all the good food was on the east side because ventilation is not sufficient to really "Cook" anything on the West Side.So all the Big Time Bear Backers in GG have had nothing to buy and much reneue has been lost. I imagine when the remodel is done, this will be rectified. We have been promised better concessions this year because the Hall of Fame room has been ripped down along with other offices creating more space. How that would change the ventilation problems, I do not know unless the roof is gone and the fumes can go to the sky.

Some Ideas: Ice Cream other than Cookies and Cream
Good Coffee
BBQ Sandwiches that are are good value and taste good.
Realistic prices for drinks along the lines of other PAC 10 venues( for cripes sakes even the Furds charge about a buck less than we do for a coke)

Me, I'm going to Looneys for Breakfast and hope I can last until the game is over. The Looneys omlet might do it. My friends want ribs at 10:00 a.m., a little much.

As you walk up to Memorial there are always kids selling water bottles-usually for some charity-for a buck.

I just buy an extra Top Dog before the game and bring it in.

I would think the big time Bear Backers would be in the hall of fame room where the food and drink are great, especially the browinies.

I have also been told that you can bring a water bottle into the stadium so long as it is sealed in order to ensure that the liquid is in fact water. If the bottle is not sealed, then you have to pour the liquid out.

There is no water bottle policy. It changes from gate to gate, from yellowjacket to yellowjacket.

Last year I was told:
Only sealed bottles
Only bottles with no caps
No bottles at all
Only empty bottles with no cap

All in the first two games :headbang

After that I just gave them a look like I was too stupid to understand and walked through with whatever I had. If they stopped me, I would demand a supervisor, and then demand a supervisor, etc, until they gave up.

For most Big Games I've noticed that there's a policy that the caps must come off. I even recall a few games where the policy was changed to cups provided at the gate.

That's our longtime standard practice, then top her off with crystal clear CMS water fountainy stuff before sitting down.

YMMV.

just blow really hard into the bottle and close the cap fast..nobody will notice.....

I always bring a carrying bag with misc. items, including a sweatshirt or similar garment - even if it's sunny ( I sit on the West side). I roll my water bottle inside the sweatshirt and no one ever checks. Make sure the there is plenty of the fabric around the bottle to cushion it so they can't feel the hard side of the bottle. Hasn't failed me yet (unless all the gate attendants read this and put out the word - what are the odds?).
PeninsulaBear
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I always bring my water in a collapsable plastic container from REI, called a Platypus. Never had a problem.

However, knowing they always run out of hot beverages during night games when the weather is cool, I brought a small thermal container of coffee. The people at the gate made me dump it out but could not explain why. I was allowed to carry the empty metal into the stadium.

I can only imagine how people attending their first Cal game must react to these secret rules. I'd say it's not a good way to make them want to come back.

This has been our experience, too. There's no consistent policy. We, too, have resorted to Larno's "wrap it in your sweatshirt" strategy at times. Cargo pants are also pretty useful.

Dean Wormer (of double secret probation fame) is in charge of the water bottle rules.

While on the subject of what is not allowed in, why aren't umbrellas allowed in? I understand and would support a rule that they can't be used in the stadium but if I am walking to and from the game and want to use an umbrella who the hell does Cal think they are saying I can't at least bring it in with me. That makes ZERO sense to me.

From http://www.calbears.com/ot/2010_fb_general_info.html:

"For the safety and comfort of guests, the following items are allowed in Memorial Stadium: laptop bags, backpacks, purses, gym bags, fanny packs, backpack purses and binoculars. All bags must be smaller than 14 inches by 14 inches by six inches, and all bags will be searched.

These items are prohibited inside Memorial Stadium: UMBRELLAS, footballs, video cameras; alcoholic beverages; cans or glass bottles; weapons or chains; fireworks; banners; horns, noisemakers; hard coolers; illegal drugs; hard fruit; animals; flying disks; sticks or poles; and placards and leaflets not approved in advance by Cal Athletics Marketing (call 510-642-2444 for information). Smoking and the sale of unauthorized merchandise and tickets is also prohibited."

Of course, there is uneven enforcement. We let the Cal Band bring in horns. We should probably enforce the no horns rule when the $c rubber band tries to bring those things into the stadium. And, we let the two teams bring footballs in, which is probably a good thing after all the money fans pay to watch a football game.
