I didn't know that GG was a backup QB in 5 straight Super Bowls. That is a record that will never be broken.

I'd be more interested in this if Gale had delivered his son to Cal. Thanks a lot, Gale!

I couldn't care less about the Gilberts after Jr. committed to Mack Brown, mastermind behind the Great Rose Bowl Robbery of 2004. Way to represent your alma mater, Gilbert Sr.

Ok guys, calm down about Gilbert Jr. picking Texas.

We all have roughly the same opinion about Mack Brown (the recent ESPN love-fest made me puke), let's separate the coach from the quarterback here.

The decision was Jr's to make, not Sr's. Cal was nominally in the running for him, but since he went to high school in Austin, it really isn't a surprise for him to pick the Horns.

No kidding......my parents are from Michigan (dad not an alum), but I grew up in the Bay Area....even is he did go to Michigan, I'd have wanted to go to Cal because this is where I grew up and who I rooted for.......

According to the article, he was a Horn fan since he was a little kid and is just living out his childhood dream. Almost impossible to change that kind of mindset. He also said that he doesn't remember details of his father's football career at Cal or in the NFL. Maybe Gale didn't talk a whole lot to his children like a lot of fathers. Oh well, he would probably be sitting on the bench behind KR anyway.

Maybe one of the things he learned at Cal is that everyone needs to think for themselves, including your own kids.

Wasn't he born after his dad left Cal? How could he remember?

Jr's decision doesn't bother me.

This.

Plus, Gale's personal sacrifice for Cal is more than sufficient. When he went down, it was almost as if someone had died. No need to take his first-born, too.

Exactly.

It was Gale Sr.'s fault for raising his son in Texas.

I don't think the alumni association kicks you out if your kid doesn't go to Cal-dad still played his heart out for the Blue and Gold. Works the other way too-my daughter, a senior in HS doesn't have the grades-can't she get in because of me??

No need on my end to defend Texas to the people on this board. Not much I say will convince anyone here one way or another on this particular topic. Nice call out, though.

I am more concerned with catching my flight to Lubbock and Texas' game Saturday night. I am concerned that Texas will lose this game [I have them losing to Tech and either OU or Kansas St., Nebraska has issues yet to be exposed] And due to the time of my flight, I am concerned about when I will get a chance to watch Cal's beatdown of Nevada. Thank goodness for the interwebs.

Don't wear orange! The Tech fans are liable to poison you! :p

And wear a helmet to avoid the tortilla tossers.

I dunno how much you know about Lubbock, but it is a pretty miserable place. The game will be highlight of the week for the town.

I tend to stay with the Texas Exes and figure that my safety and wife's is better with the herd. You may have a disdain for Texas fans and will not opt for this. In that case, try to find some of the Tech BBQs going. Make a mention about something anti-Texas or that it is an elitist institution. That'll make you some Tech friends fast.

In all seriousness, Tech and Texas get along well aside from the game against each other. Tech and Aggy, on the other hand, there is a lot of hate there.

Yeah I go down every year with a buddy who's Dad lives there -- can't spend more than about 36 hours there...

Was at the Tech/Texas game 2 years ago -- great game, but I wasn't blown away by the tailgating.

People were by and large friendly though -- both to me and the opposing fans to each other.

Hope it's a good game -- thanks for the intel.

I posted another thread about this, but there was an article in Sports Illustrated recently about Garrett and his dad that included this quote:

Quote:

Gilbert comes by that honestly. His father, Gale, played quarterback at Cal -- he beat Garrett's idol, John Elway, in the famous Cal-Stanford band game in 1982 -- and played eight seasons in the NFL. During a family trip one summer when Garrett was in high school, Gale even tried to convince Garrett to check out Berkeley, but Gilbert wanted nothing to do with any school other than Texas. "He had zero interest," Gale said. "If Texas offered, that was what he was doing."

Of all the games over the past 8 years, That Tech game in 2008 was the one I missed [in person or on TV]. My son got married that weekend, on the Sunday after. Got to watch that game with family. Fortunately, the the momentary disappointment was washed away by a great wedding on the Sunday.

It's funny, in many ways 2008 was such a surprise. Many were down on Colt after this 2007 regression, and there was a great deal of youth and new coaches who arrived, namely Muschamp and Applewhite. 2008 was a good surprise when taken in the context of the entire season.

I'm hoping that 2010 is like that as well. Unfortunately, the inexperience at WR and at QB are going to nip Texas at some point, possibly multiple points. I think 2011/2012 is next legitimate run at the MNC Texas can make. 2011 will have a glaring weakness at CB, but strong otherwise. 2012 should be a great year.

So now that Jr. goes to Texas, he will learn to win at all costs even if it means a little brown-nosing. Way to go, Gilberts!

Perhaps I was being too subtle. I was just kidding, folks! If Garrett grew up in Austin, then of course he wanted to go to UT. I don't blame daddy one iota.

First off, it's a joke at the expense of Texas. I don't know what to say if you didn't see that.

Second, dissing somebody's kid? Have you seen the stuff some posters have said about Longshore in the past or Riley just last season? You need to get off your high horse buddy. And maybe a little dose of reality.
