Ackbar would have been awesome, I remember hearing that they actually contacted LucasArts and got tentative approval for the idea.

It looks like the idea is that "black bear" is almost sorta kinda a homonym for "ackbar".

Too bad that Lucasfilm wouldn't let Ole Miss use Admiral Ackbar, or maybe they just told Ole Miss that the school would have to license the rights from Lucasfilm and the school wanted a mascot to which they own all rights.

I don't think that "Gold" carries any racial connotation or overtones.
And I agree that Admiral Ackbar would have been GREAT.

I stopped reading the article when I saw the the dean of students was named "Sparky", something about that doesn't seem right.

The Rebel Black bear..ROFL thats worse than the CRAB at SF Giants game.

Replacing the old dude as a mascot doesn't change the fact that they are still the "Rebels," AKA secesh, traitors, losers. They celebrate their loser past and lifestyle built on slavery.

I think some students at Ole Miss should still do the Admiral Ackbar deal in the stands. They would be rebelling against the Rebels in an ironic way.

For example, in the stands at Raiders games, it a mix between swashbuckling Pirates, Star Wars (Dark Raider and his stormtrooper bodyguard) and Mad Max biker gang types and other creations (vampire? gothic?) so some fans can still express themselves and don't have to abide by the "official" mascot or image of the team (the Raiders are originally pirate-based).

Likewise, if some Ole Miss students don't like this whole "Rebel Black Bear" deal, they should still flaunt the Star Wars thing in the stands. It would great to see.

i just skimmed the article and it said the mascot was inspired by faulkner's short story, "the bear." faulker is the first thing other than ole miss that i think of whenever i see any mention of oxford, ms so i'm glad they're embracing a bit of their heritage that most would be proud to call their own. go rebel black bears!
