I really have a hard time understanding how we're cleaning up with these recruits against Oregon. Is the idea of a rebuild job that enticing? New facilities? Playing at ATT this year? Tosh/Pendergast (it hasn't escaped my notice most of our stellar recruits are defense recuits)?

Not that I'm complaining, but we never picked off the kind of talent we are this year (or last).

I think most of us find it hard to believe how well recruiting is going because a lot of BI posters are set on turning against the coaching staff, but it's the coaching staff that is putting together these classes. hopefully they realize how to utilize what they have.

It's gotta be the facilities. The SAHPC will be complete by the time these guys step on campus in the fall... remodeled stadium by year 2. Oregon may be winning right now, but we still best them in academics, location, and having a coach that isn't a snake oil salesman. To me those things would be more important than Oregon's results on the field this year-- and keep in mind that these stud recruits believe they will make a difference on the field wherever they go.

- #1 public school and top 5 academic institution in the world by numerous ranking institutions

- a program that has won more games than any other not named USC since our current head coach took over and just ended a streak of 8 straight bowl appearances

- location in one of the 3-4 best metropolitan areas in the US, arguably the best

- brand spanking new training facilities within 2 years, which previously was the only thing Oregon really had on us

- coaches that are real with players and try to build a sense of family and instill that in their players

- more current active players in the NFL than just about any other program in the nation, on par with powerhouses like USC, LSU, Texas, etc. Definitely more RB than any other program, not sure about the other positions but I know we're near the top in terms of total players.

what's not to like?

Tuesday is going to be very interesting - it's safe to say that Walls has given both fanbases reasons to be optimistic about his college choice over the past few weeks.

Come on, now.

It really isn't that simple of an equation.

(and I'm pretty sure that as far as active NFL rosters are concerned, we each have 3 RBs in the league...)

I'm trying really hard to ignore also this notion that your team is more of a family and the coaches are more real with the players...

So your claim is that the accurately quoted perception of a mother of a recuit is not an accurate quote? Or you simply disagree with her, based on your vast, intimate, and personal knowledge of both the Oregon and Cal coaching staffs?
MinotStateBeav

Yeah Belotti..your off base here. We have heard from a TON of recruits some we have signed and some not, that Cal "Was like a family". These are direct quotes. So its become so common for us to hear it.

Actually I think Bellotti's intimating that he's concerned about recruits and players citing Cal's family-like atmosphere as a major draw and what that might say by negative implication about Oregon's coaches.

I've only been active on the boards for a few days, but I get the feeling posters really need to stop picking needless arguments with the guy. Dude seems quite reasonable and amiable (as far as Ducks fans go. Sorry, had to take at least one pot shot.)
MoragaBear

So their response to Cal's recruiting success?

"They must be cheating."

"They must be paying recruits."

Not quite in the realm of UW posters saying, "F Bigelow." And, "I hope he blows out two more acl's." but pathetic, nonetheless.

Well sorta... I just don't appreciate the argument that Cal is *more* "family-like" and that coaches are *more* "real" with their players etc...

We Oregon fans read the same quotes from our targets/commits referring to our program, so it's kind of silly to argue that one school offers "X" and another doesn't, when it comes to talking about things like "family atmosphere."

We (your fellow fans and I) pretty much only talk football so I'm pretty sure at the end of the day it all qualifies as needless, lol. But thanks for the kind words.

You're right about his nature, newbie, but Bellotti has joined a network where his university doesn't have an affiliate site. I could see if one occasionally looks at other sites, especially near games and LOI day, but Belloti's presence on the 8th place PAC-10 team site is really odd to me. Then again, the 2nd place Furd site is really boring, so our culture of dialog must be entertaining. I rarely go to the Duckies site, so I"m not sure how they handle themselves. Bellotti must not get enough from their site, though. Those are my 2 cents...

I guarantee you your namesake Mr. Bellotti considers Cal a better head coaching job than Oregon right now. With the new facilities and his roots in Northern California, he would probably LOVE to recruit for Cal against Oregon now.
BellottiBold
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Actually I'm just addicted to the recruiting game, and spend way too much time thinking about Oregon football in general. Oregon actually did have an affiliate site until very recently, Duck Territory, but they've joined up with 247sports, fwiw. Yours is not the only "other team" site I participate on (drunkoski and I kick each other in the nuts at a few other sites) but it's probably the one I'm most active on. Mostly that's because I find the quality of discussion to be to my liking, and it actually matters to me what a fanbase like yours thinks of the program I so heavily identify with. I'm also from San Francisco, so there's that, and I recognize you as being probably Oregon's single biggest recruiting rival.

And in my previous post I forgot to point out how obviously retarded those MB-quoted comments were. Sour grapes, ignorance, whatever...

... he might?

But it's pretty silly for you to say something like that considering the funds that Phil continues to make available for the AD.

So you're saying Oregon is the new Pony Excess? I hope you realize that every time you talk up Phil Knight's cash, you give people the impression that Oregon is paying off athletes.

I don't understand this 'hater' mentality towards BB. Who cares why he's here? He's insightful, respectful, and provides a unique perspective from a rival school. Of course he has differing opinions from time-to-time due to his Oregon allegiance but he is also quite fair when addressing often unfair/false comments regarding the Oregon football program. I for one am happy to have him -- and others like the ASU guy who used to post here -- on this site.

Maybe I gave you that impression, but thankfully you aren't "all people." I talk up Phil Knight's cash to give the impression that, for the time being, Oregon has an endless flow of dough to blow on audacious AD and football facilities projects. Beyond that the Nike affiliation has helped Oregon craft a very strong national brand identity - considering that the Ducks haven't really won big yet on the field. Phil and Nike are why I think your initial comment about Bellotti's preference today was totally absurd.

Getting back on topic, how do the Oregon insiders know that Walls is a Cal lean? And how come no Cal insiders are piping up to say they've heard the same thing?

P.S. Getting back off topic, I'm also one of those that thinks Bellotti elevates the conversation around here and is a welcome counterpoint. I have never understood posters who pounce on fans of other programs simply because they are fans of other programs.

JJ Arrington - waived by Philly Eagles this year and hasn't caught on w/ a team
Justin Forsett - Seattle Seahawks
Marshawn Lynch - Seattle Seahawks
Jahvid Best - Detroit Lions
Adimchinobe Echemandu - Oakland Raiders

Vereen will be there either this year or next, but i didn't count him yet

essentially every primary back Tedford has ever had at Cal has been drafted, don't know how your argument holds much water there BB. only USC can match the 4 active players we have right now at RB

some day if I have time I'll count the total number, the Wikipedia has it at about 40

You're lumping everybody into one giant category called "coaching staff". In reality, there's the Offensive Coaching Staff and the Defensive Coaching Staff, with Special Teams typically being coached by one guy with some assistance.

Most, if not all the criticism, has been directed toward the Offensive Coaching Staff, notably (former OL Coach) Marshall, OC Ludwig and WR Coach Daft....and possibly HC/QB Guru Tedford for not being able to produce QBs who can hit the side of a barn when given adequate pass-protection. RB Coach Gould is untouchable and greatly appreciated.

Cal is doing great recruiting Defensive Players. No complaints there.

The OL recruiting should lie at the feet of the HC since his offense is predicated on that area and he did great with landing Williams. Hope he continues with his efforts.

Daft and Ludwig as recruiters this season? Still have to wait and see on that one. (Please excuse me if they have been already credited with landing a great prospect and it has escaped my attention). Land a Gould-type as WR Coach and the sky might be the limit.

Even if they are Ace Recruiters for the Offense, their duties as Offensive Coaches on Gameday (and behind the scenes during practice) will still be greatly scrutinized by any Cal Fan with a good pair of eyeballs. Hopefully, if not replaced later, Daft and Ludwig attend any and all coaching clinics (maybe with Chris Ault at Nevada and clinics with other schools) and improve their coaching.

Long story short -- Defense good, Offense sucky and the "turning against the coaching staff" is offensive-biased.

If you are going to count Echemandu and Arrington, then I'm going to count Jeremiah Johnson - and you'll have 1 more RB in the league *today* then us. Bravo.

Chip Kelly is the real reason Oregon has turned into a rushing powerhouse, and he's only had 4 seasons to recruit/produce RBs. Hell only LGB and LMJ are his guys (Morris, Johnson, Stewart - all pretty much from before CK's time.) LMJ will leave Oregon as the greatest Duck RB of all time, statistically speaking, so it will be interesting to see where things go with more of CK's recruits at the position.
