Why are you surprised at Locker coming in last but not Newton next to last? What do you know about these young men that makes their placement so surprising?

Based on samples of the Wonderlic I've seen, an average fourth grader could score above 21.

Haha. Exactly what I was thinking. Wonder if it is something other than the fact that one is black and the other is white. Hope so.

It is interesting to compare them to this list of starting NFL QBs. Peyton Manning only scored a 28. Colin Kaepernick's 37 is better than Aaron Rodgers's 35. The more I learn about Kaepernick, the more I wish we had him over Riley.

Writing your name in huge letters on a stolen laptop isn't terribly bright.

Kap went through Turlock public schools and I having been born and raised in Turlock can say that the public education there is some of the best in the state. Kap graduated from Pitman High in Turlock and John Pitman was the principal at Turlock High when I went there and there was only one hi school in the area. Paul Larson was 2 years ahead of me and Turlock has produced some outstanding qbs in the past. Kap was highly recommended to JT when he was in HS by Roger Theder but JT had already offered Riley who had accepted. What a mistake in hindsight. Watching Kap play you could tell he had far greated intellengence than Riley and one doesn't need a wonderlick test to determine that.

You must have a guilty conscience to think that is the case...how about Pac 10 vs SEC..... I would hope our Pac 10 guys, especially QB's would show a bit more brain power..... I always wonder why people jump to that conclusion first unless of course they are a crusader for something .....

A lot of folks on this board have a major thing for Kaepernick. Yes, the guy is a good QB, but there are dozens of other QBs that we could have recruited who fell through the cracks. This is how recruiting works. The past is the past - why don't we look to the future in Bridgford or Maynard?

Because Newton is a known dumbass whereas Locker hasn't opened his mouth off enough to recognize not a lot going on. For all you politically-correct people, go ahead and make it a racial deal so you can feel righteous about yourself.

How do you determine this, because the nevada quarterback succeeded in an exotic system? Riley's career at Cal is over, you can probably stop dumping on him now. He gave his best to Cal, and I respect him for that.

The report in today's news is that LSU CB Patrick Patterson got the lowest score on the Wonderlich (SP?) test - a 9. That's right, single digits. The rreport stated that a score that low is essentially equated with knowing one's own name. (!) The report goes on to quote several scouts saying (I'm paraphrasing a bit) that "He's slow, but it's no big deal, because he works hard, and if he is playing in the 'cat' formation (i.e. man-to-man coverage), he does not need to learn much." WR A.J. Green was the next lowest score with a 10. The scouts expressed more concern with him, given that WR's have to learn a number of plays.

How does a kid like Patterson make it through even one semester at LSU? I realize LSU is not exactly a paragon of academic excellence, but if the kid can't muster double figures on the Wonderlich test, I have to wonder how he could pass even ONE college level course.

He was probably the runner up for Valedictorian ........

Nebraska's Prince Amukamara answered 35 of the 50 questions correctly, according to Nawrocki, which is an outstanding mark. LSU's Patrick Peterson, meanwhile, scored a 9, and was one of four players to score in single digits.

I wrote a story about the Wonderlic test in 2005 in which I interviewed company president Charlie Wonderlic. He said a score of 10 or below is an indication of literacy problems.

"You can still be a great football player, but it means you can't be trained through reading," Wonderlic said. "What that's really telling you is just how much of a challenge it's going to be to teach this person."

ESPN's Chris Mortensen shed some light on how several of the top quarterback prospects fared on the annual Wonderlic test on Thursday. Today, Nolan Nawrocki of Pro Football Weekly reports that LSU's Patrick Peterson and Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green had two of the lowest scores at the 2011 Scouting Combine. Peterson posted a 9 on the 50-question test, with Green answering 10 questions correctly. Florida offensive lineman Carl Johnson, South Carolina cornerback Chris Culliver, and Oklahoma running back Kendall Hunter were the three other Combine invites to score in the single-digits.

4 of the 5 lowest scores were SEC guys..... anyone see a pattern here????

ok, I'm bias but I still think the SEC produces more dumb a$$es as a whole.....this is purely anecdotal evidence .....but I'm sure there is proof somewhere on the internetzzzzzzzzzz

Sometimes people make too much of the wonderlic. You don't need to be a genius to play most positions in the NFL, you need to work hard and apply yourself in game/film/scheme study. I am fairly certain Frank Gore is learning disabled and may have been a low scoring wonderlic taker, but he is relentless and has always done what it takes to learn his duties. I'd rather have a guy like him than Jamarcus and his 24. Marino and Terry Bradshaw both scored 15. Matt Leinart scored a 35.

Here's a list of notable QB scores: http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=61&f=3972&t=3012998

interesting list there...
Wikipedia says that the average intelligence maps to about a score of 20... and that a score of at least 10 indicates that a person is literate. It also notes that the average score for quarterbacks is 24 (most scouts want at least a score of 21)... and that the position with the highest average score is OT, which scores 26, followed by Center averaging 25.

Cal_Fan2 beat me to it - a score that low probably indicates very poor literacy skills. Patterson's raw intelligence may be better than his score suggests.

Your question remains pertinent: how can someone who can barely read and write retain eligibility as a university student-athlete?

it's the SEC. anything goes, anything flies. if you see an eye, gouge it. if you see a laptop, take it. if you see a drunken girl, take advantage of it. if you can get money out of it, do it.

this is the SEC players' handbook. does this surprise anyone?

Great for him....he must be an outlier...You have to go by the averages I suppose...Out of the 5 lowest scores, 4 of them were from SEC guys.... take it for what it is worth... it is closer to the fact then inferring someone is a racist out of the wild blue yonder...

I even go so far as to agree that the Wonderlic is probably more about thinking "fast on your feet" (I've taken a portion of the test) then it is about true intelligence but how can Carl Johnson from Florida score a 6? Usually offensive lineman score some of the highest scores.......LOL..... these guys do go to class at a university don't they?????

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm going to try to avoid the racism issue here, although I think it is a factor. Why do these scores show up here every year? I hope there is a reason other than some misguided sense of superiority. The guy scored a 6. So what? I'd be willing to bet everything I've got that 75% of the guys here would score a 6 or lower on an athletic version of the test. Why is it so much more noble to have success with your mind as opposed to your body?

Depending on what you believe, either we were given or randomly have a certain set of traits, abilities, qualities, etc. Why are some better than others? Do the best with what you've got. If you are great looking, use that. If you've got a great mind, use that. If you can run, or jump, or throw, use that. It would be great if everyone had the mental acuity of your average Bear Insider, but they don't. Before we get so far ahead of ourselves making fun of Patrick Peterson for allegedly being illiterate, perhaps we should remember that he is going to make more money using his body for a handful of years than us geniuses will make in our lifetimes, combined.
