What Made Holmoe Such a Lousy Coach?

One telling thing was when asked why He didn't change the defensive scheme when it wasn't working, Tom replied, "The defensive coach won't change it"

What, Tedford did that with BG.

After all he was bright, had NFL experience and superbowl rings with the local team and was perceived (correctly?) as having integrity. Yet he was a disaster as a coach. Why? One hint from a Cal offensive lineman I knew in the 98-01 period is that he didn't command respect letting players like Ainsworth and Davenport run over him. I don't know if this is true. Any thoughts?

Apparently a very good AD @ BYu.

One of the season ticket holders I sat next to during Holmoe's tenure always watched the sidelines with binoculars; he would constantly talk about how disorganized the sideline was. Considering the many timeouts followed by a delay of game, and the stories about his leadership, it all seems to fit.

Funny enough, I sat with him during Tedford's first year and he commented on how improved the organization was. I've noticed the last couple of years the team seems a bit more disorganized; I think there was even a delay of game after a time out. hopefully bringing back a lot of the old coaches will get some of that organization back.

But even though he was such a terrible coach, somewhere between 60-70% of the board still shouted down anyone who dared suggest that he be replaced. This is why it's so unsurprising that Tedford gets as much support here despite having a losing conference record over the last four seasons. If people could convince themselves that Holmoe was about to turn the corner back then, it's very very easy for them to convince themselves that a guy who had a one-loss regular season many seasons ago is about to turn it around.

The difference here is that Holmoe, unlike Tedford, never showed he could turn a corner. But if JT's only notable achievement at Cal, in your opinion, is a single one-loss season, then I guess it's not surprising that you would say this.

Is Bob Gregory still on the Cal staff?

Was he on the staff from 2006-2009?

True, but I can even excuse that--clearly Holmoe was a bad bet, but sometimes people take chances and make bad decisions under time pressure and the advice of "The Genius" --what I can't excuse is that Holmoe was our head coach for 5 years with contract extensions and left with a big payout because he had years left on his contract (and had just received another extension that he "needed" for "recruiting"?). When he got it, all the Holmoe supporters said "Tom needs this extension for recruiting purposes, but he is such a good and honorable man that he would not take the money if he was asked to step down next year." He took the money.

I think Holmoe's hiring was the coaching equivalent of "every woman in the bar is beautiful at closing time."

Yes. But it's not as if the defense was horrible every year he was here, or even during his last three years. He wasn't a great DC, but he wasn't bad, either. And eventually JT did get rid of him.

Hard to believe that he played defense 7 years in the NFL, and multiple Super Bowl rings.

Didn't seem to have either the size or the temperment to be an NFLer.

Tom Holmoe was named Director of Athletics at Brigham Young University on March 1, 2005. He oversees a nationally recognized program with 21 intercollegiate sports, involving more than 600 student-athletes and a 150-person staff.

Since Holmoe's appointment, BYU has captured 58 Mountain West Conference regular-season or postseason championships, and more than 100 student-athletes have earned All-America status. Over the past four years, both the football and men's basketball teams have enjoyed tremendous success. In fact, BYU is the only school in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision to win at least 10 football games and 25 basketball games in each of the last four seasons (2006-10).

Short, slow, slight and meek is not the usual formula for an NFL safety.

I saw the Rutgers-Cal game that year -- Cal's only win of the season. So he's been gone for nearly a decade. Isn't it time to let this go?

While I do believe we should release ourselves of anger, it is always appropriate and useful to analyze mistakes we made in the past to ensure they are not repeated. No matter how happy you are with Tedford (and I know opinions vary on this board) the fact is that he will have to be replaced at some point (unless we have a future Nobel Laureate who discovers the antidote for aging).

Wow, talk about a "picking at scabs" story.

Any way, Holmoe was a bad coach because:

d) poor support staff and no support from the AD

I haven't read all of the posts in this thread, but has anyone mentioned Steve Hagen?

Pat Hill hired Hagen in 2006 and this nearly destroyed the program. Most coaches last forever at Fresno State, but Steve was gone after one year.

We do like Holmoe at Fresno State, however, since his move to make BYU an independent made an opening for Fresno State to be invited to the MWC.
