Bertolo's on Telegraph, home of the triple drinks for about $1.50...Doggie Diner was also actually about a block away.

Yep, pretty much a tall glass of vodka with my dinner.

In 1969-70 I worked at Si's Charbroiler on the corner of Ashby and Telegraph (now gone); but the best burger was at Giant Burger on Euclid near Hearst (also now gone). For a cheap stomach filler, the steam cart at Telegraph and Bancroft served a tasty kraut dog for 25 cents!

Hof Brau at Grand and Broadway in Oakland.

Jenkin's BBQ was THE first BBQ in Oakland in the late 1960s around 7th St.

Giovanni's on Shattuck is still there.

Peking Cuisine on 8th and Franklin in Oakland was the best Chinese food I have ever had. It closed in 1984.

Cafe Mediterranean has been there since the late 1950s on Telegraph.

Steve's Korean is still in Durant court though, along with Kip's it seems to be the longest lasting outfit in the restaurant business along Durant Way.

Closed now:cry:

In Berkeley....KC's BBQ. They had the best beef sandwiches but always ran out in early evening. Haven't had one in awhile though.

Hof Brau was another fave when I worked one summer in Oakland. The best corned beef sandwich I ever had, huge schooners and the most amazing urinals this side of the Madonna Inn. Emil Villa's Hickory Pit was a regular dining stop, not great but edible BBQ and easy on the wallet. There was also a Mexican restaurant in West Oakland, the name of which escapes me that was worth the trek, somewhere near Slim Jenkins' club. Favored watering holes: The Kingfish, Monkey Inn and the Rathskellar downstairs at Blake's.

Don't forget the great MONKEY INN, the home of Creedance before they became CCR. We ate peanuts and drank beer for dinner.

Sukiaki Yakatori Bowl on Durant. Average food, excellent pitchers.
Manuels - Durant. Sittting on kegs, perfect tables for playing quarters, large burritos for little $'s.
Kingpin Donuts - Durant - 2:00 am, warm buttermilk..... nirvana.
Blondies
Bertola's - $1 triples!

...does anyone remember Toraya a Japanese restaurant on Solano? They also had another place near Japantown in SF. Even though I had grown up with a lot of Japanese people in the South Bay area of LA (like Gardena) I had never really had Japanese cuisine, let alone sushi back then (late 60's, early 70's) and this place was my introduction. I went there for years afterwards and they stayed open a long time.....best Sukiyaki I think I ever had!

That is sad. A few years ago they re-opened but closed down pretty quickly. I tried it...it was close but not the same. The story I heard was the owner, Mr. Flint (?) died and didn't leave the sauce recipe. I lived a few blocks from Flints for a couple of years...that smoke smell was killer.

This is a cut-and-paste from a facebook friend who went to Berkeley High in the 1970s-80s and claims he knew the Flint's recipe. He is a nephew. Pardon the grammatical errors in this direct quote / cut-and-paste.

"the flints sauce boys is a prune juice base you may use a small can of Tomato paste when making it but boil down a large bottle of sunsweet prune juice down add red crushed pepper and garlic powder and onion powder or dried onion glakes and a tabl...e spoon of white vinagar and bring to a simmer it should be about half what it was after your reduce it and then bring in a some Plantation black strap molasass about 1/3 cup and again reduce to a thick paste then let cool and use the next day that is the recipe for the sauce what and how you cook the ribs is a whole nother long thing is interested I can give you more by the way boys i miss ol B town and both Ruben and Yura are a great part of my coming of age"

Love Everett & Jones, good reminder. I just shared the Flint's sauce recipe that few people know is still floating around among his family members. Sirloin & Brew I have not been to in ages.

Also if you want REALLY good BBQ you have to go to the South. Also try Lilly's on Divisadero in San Francisco if you want very good BBQ.

And K.C.s is still in business near Parker and San Pablo but it closes in the evenings.

Mexicali Rose near the Oakland Courthouse is the oldest Mexican restaurant in Oakland.

Francesco's near the Oakland Coliseum has been there since the 1960s also.

Oh yeah, Si's on Durant was great. A meal deal of hamburger, salad, drink, and I think fries was like $1.25 in the late 60's. Even then that was a good deal. And Giant Burger..........great burgers, and the soft ice cream cones we used to call "gravel cones" because the consistency of the ice cream could be a bit rough. Still, it never stopped us. Oh yeah, I think Si's used to have free popcorn too, but my memory might be clouded by over 40 years.

Good Burgers, good sauce.

The jingle wasn't "When the hunger hits..." it was "When the HUNGRIES hit..." because their mascots were three animated characters, the "Hamburger Hungry" (who looked kinda like Ernie from Sesame Street because he was a guy whose head was a giant burger), the "Chicken Hungry" who was shaped like a chicken drumstick, and the "Fish Hungry" who was shaped like a blue fish.

The thing I remember most was that it was probably the first chain to experiment with the "Fixin's bar." ) and when you ordered a burger it came plain, and you could add your own ketchup, lettuce, whatever, from a bar.

I don't think anyone can replicate it again however.

I'll try to decipher it for you in an actual recipe format as admittedly this was a cut-and-paste from a somewhat illiterate post.

-One small can of Tomato paste

-One large (= 48 oz. bottle) of Sunsweet (brand name) prune juice

-Add red crushed pepper (to taste)

-garlic powder (to taste)

-onion powder or dried onion flakes (to taste, I'd go w/ powder, mixes in better)

-a tablespoon of white wine vinagar;

and bring to a simmer it should be about half what it was after your reduce it.

-Add 1/3 cup Plantation black strap molasass and again reduce to a thick paste then let cool and use the next day...that is the recipe for the sauce."

Personally I would add a tiny bit of salt, a dab of mustard, and maybe a dash of liquid smoke.

Lived on Durant in the 80s and saw a bunch of changes in that center miss those days..

before Nations, same spot-- Uncertain Grounds -- burger joint with an earthquake theme!

on top Jade Garden, pretty decent, then a breakfast place later

Manny's..carne asada burrito..beer everywhere and Aerosmith blaring in standing room only crowds...

Berkeley Market on telegraph, gone now, had a good deli...

eclair....old world/school bakery..shame it moved/closed...

Bongo burger.

Heidelberg's..yes good call german hof by day chinese buf by night, potstickers at midnight...

Casa de Eva--miss this one badly---down tele past Andronico's on the right lots of RC Gorman's on the walls, great mexican food.

Lu's kitchen north side. yangtzhe (sp) north side..hong fu center and shattuck..

FLINT'S... jesus, my 2AM salvation, nothing like a plate from there...

Brennan's, at the highway....closed that place down once at 19, haha great night...so I'm told..

Spenger's... across the way regular watering hole from day one...2 of the longest bars in the bay at that time,..barmen served any age it seemed...

Bertola's....cheap spaghetti and cheap red wine bythe bucket poured straight from the bar gun

I remember a MacFarlane's Candy and Ice Cream on Shattuck near University. They also had a branch on Broadway in Oakland, across the street from Oakland Tech.

How about the Ground Cow on Shattuck? Big burgers and thick shakes with enough for two glasses in the stainless steel containers. They also had a branch in Penryn on I-80 on the way to Reno and one in Reno, itself.

Nearby Edy's is the one I miss the most. I always got the Monte Cristo sundae there (toasted almond ice cream with caramel sauce and cashews). Oakland had two branches, one on Grand and one on Lakeshore. Dreyer's bought their name and uses it on their retail ice cream sold back east, so not to be confused with Breyer's, a more established name there.

McCallums was right next to the theater just a few blocks down from the tunnel and I think I lived there for dessert so I knew it well. My God, the peach ice cream was to die for since it was all made from fresh peaches...I can still taste it now!!!!

Joseph Edy and William Dreyer were business partners. I'm not sure if they had to buy out the name per se.

That Edy's location on Shattuck was never successful after it closed. I remember the Eddie Bauer store eventually closed, and several businesses there closed. They were using that location for a seasonal Halloween store.

I'd bet that was because of the lack of parking. People went to Edy's usually in the evening, after a movie or, in my case, mainly after Cal basketball games, with my dad in the fifties. The parking was tolerable at that hour, but was atrocious during the daytime. This was before some of the garages were built.

You are right Bears Lair. Well, sorta. It was Ortman's in the 50's. They also had a shop at the top of Fairmount in El Cerrito. McCallums, at the same time, was on Shattuck near Live Oak Park. The Solano location later became Mccallums but it was Ortman's first.
Come on Golden Oldie, you gotta know this!
