Someone mentioned earlier in a post that Cal has some branding issues. I'm not a marketing person and can't speak to that but I do notice that we have a varied assortment of logos, designs, and even colors. How many different shades of blue and gold are there really? The Dodgers, Yankees, UCLA, and North Carolina have instantly recognizable shades of blue. And yet, for the past 10 years or so, when the football team charges out of the north tunnel, the colors in the endzones don't match the uniforms. I hope the person who made that decision was fired. The endzones were always an eyesore for me and I'm glad they ripped it out.

But alas, I have the feeling that the same kookoos who made the earlier mistake are in charge again. That little thing on Calbears.com with choices 1-7 left out the best design option. I'm talking about the field design of the original astroturf before grass was put it. The endzones weren't painted and the lettering was in GOLD. Of course, the geniuses left it out, either by accident or by choice, who knows. But that design was the best and they stuck with it for years before they installed grass. North endzone - CALIFORNIA, south - GOLDEN BEARS, 50 - CAL script, pac-12 logos

Our shade of blue just doesn't go well with the green field. Even Michigan knows that. Please, let's get this right the first time.

Totally agree on getting the endzone colors right. It should be a much darker blue. I don't think that necessarily means we have to go with gold though.

Well, Michigan's colors are Maize (ie - corn yellow) and Blue, not Blue and Gold. They are just using their main school color for the field markings and that is fine and dandy for them.

Our official school colors are Blue (ie- Yale Blue) and Gold (ie - Golden Yellow) and Design #1 purports to show the end zones in that proper main color of blue, not that lighter shade that had "adorned" our field for some reason since we reconverted Memorial to synthetic turf several years back.

I happen to think that the "new" (ie - official) color of blue looks great in the end zones, especially with the improved, strong gold lettering.

Incidentally, these are the official state colors also. See:

I agree. If push came to shove, I would definitely choose Design #1 over the other six. Yes, compared to the others, it's a safe choice and not as daring, but it seems to be the most natural and fitting.

btw, I wish the team would swap places and stand on the shady side of CMS and let the other team endure the bright sun during afternoon games, but that's another topic.

I would like to point out that UCLA does not have an instantly recognizable shade of blue. They are constantly changing. Their away uniforms have a very dark blue. Their home uniforms went darker in the last couple years (still light blue, but much darker than the powder blue it had been before). The football team does not seem to match the basketball team at all.

Agree, UCLA is a mess. If you're UCLA, you have to embrace your chosen colors, not wear other teams' colors half the time. About 1/4 of their fans wear dark blue and gold even when they play us. Their band wears navy too. It's pretty weak. Stop the self-loathing, UCLA. You picked powder blue, now own it.

Actually, two problems with that suggestion:

(1) Pac-12 rules state that the home team's sideline is opposite the Press Box and
(2) Pac-12 rules also state that the home team's Student Section cannot be behind the visiting tam bench.

But, hey, if you flip the Press Box to the East Side and the Students away from the Visiting Team Bench, then you're golden.

What were the results of the previous poll regarding field fenestration or detailing?

Just so it is not #7, the argyle sock--that would give me a headache.

when you have people in facilities choose the design and colors you're bound to have problems:headbang

Somewhere, I can't remember where (or what I had for breakfast) seems like there's a Pac conference HQ rule against putting visitors in a worse position than their host, however defined, facing the sun for instance, or risking serious injury in front of the student section? In addition to the question of moving them further from their local locker-room facilities.

Surely the always intimidating stats wizard DDempster would know all about this, letter and verse. Right David?

Just a point of information...the end zone colors were proper up to the Joe Kapp era when he had the unis changed back to dark blue.

There are two problems with the suggestion of putting Cal's team bench on the shady (West) side and the Visitors on the sunny (East) side:

(1) Pac-12 rules state that the home team's sideline is opposite the Press Box and
(2) Pac-12 rules also state that the home team's Student Section cannot be behind the visiting team bench.

No worries... I miss stuff in plain view, too.

Besides, I gives me a chance to repeat myself without appearing like I have Alzheimer's.

I have no problems with blue endzones ala West Virginia and even Kent St. It just bugs me that they left out an option that they once had for so many years. Oh, i fogot to mention that the font in our last design seemed off as well. please, let's get this right the first time.

I believe Field Turf can be repainted, while Momentum Turf cannot. Let's at least go with the turf that allows a design change . Being stuck with that lighter blue is an embarrassment.
