Millionaires vs Billionaires

Sounds like health care after an NFL career is on the chopping block. More reason to get a decent degree for the average NFLer so you can actually work when you're done NFLing.

I had a class with that dick Harry Edwards back in the day...it drove home that you really had to be a long time NFL player to make any money and really enjoy the money and benefits of the NFL...the ave. life of an NFL'er is 3 and change years, ..the pension kicks in after 5 or so...he was a douche, but kind of amusing...

Back in the day it might've been true but not today. If you're in the NFL for 4 years making the minimum every year you make something in the $1.5-2MM range. I think that's pretty good money.

yea, so it's not that you have to have something good to fall upon it's called money management---i'm pretty sure I could invest 3 million dollars pretty well, live within my means, and get a side job making 40 (capped) and retire at 50

What's that realistically after taxes and after living costs while working in the NFL? Maybe a million? That's what I call a good start, but certainly not something you can coast on from the age of 30 till social security.

The vesting time for getting an NFL pension is now 3 years -- they changed it in '92. They can start collecting at age 55.

"average NFL career is 3 1/2 years"...

That figure is brought down by the considerable number of very marginal players that find a spot on a team for a year or even a fraction thereof, then never make it back for whatever reason.

That probably consists of most of the players.
Look back at your favorite team's draft picks over the past 10 years. How many of them are still in the league?

The mode (or largest single category) is probably players who get cut off and play less than one season. Usually when averaging the numbers will be skewed on the right. The mean is just another word for average.

the spread between averages and medians will depend on the shape of the curve tail. An average career length of 3.5 years actually means that the median career length is probably less than 3 years (I would gues in the high 2s), because you have guys like Tony Gonzales or old kickers skewing the data.

You see that median/average spread phenomenon very dramatically when you look at income levels. If you compare GDP per capita in the US (around $47k) to median income per capita (around $25k) you get a huge difference due to the fact that top earners totally skew the average figure (the top 20% in the US earn 85% of total income).

tough noogies

if they want decent paying long-term careers they should not go in to sports. Just like hollywood.

This sounds a bit like actuarial tables that show a low life expectancy in countries with high infant mortality rates. That figure sometimes changes a lot if they include only those who made it to adolescence.

I would like to see this figure using only those players who lasted at least two years.

Both numbers are valid, but they convey different information.
