I'm glad we got to the meat of the OPs real question: patent law and international commerce.

Go test devices and choose whatever you prefer. There are a lot of decent products. I've heard the most good things about the Apple and Asus tablets.

I am in the market for a tablet.
It seems there is a basic breakdown in products.
Apple ipad, and everything else.
I work as a clinical analyst so I have some IT knowledge but
confess to being pretty ignorant about tablets.
Colleagues who are knowledgeable all frown on anything with an Android system, be it a smart phone or a tablet.
I've looked at Vizio, android, low memory.
Xoom again I believe low memory
I am also interested in using Clear as a provider.
I want to use the tablet to stream movies and sports, reading books
on line, and accessing the web, email, Bear Insider etc.
Any thoughts?

i have a color nook, you can root it and install android, its a great alternative to higher priced pads. google --rooted nook cm7 to check it out. you can also add memory which is great. i used to be an apple guy but really enjoy android. if your looking for a pad with wifi only its great...

Me no understand. You'd think with 50% margins you could afford to make some of your products in th US.

Wait. You're against maximizing profits legally? Who abducted the DO that said that people who made jillions of dollars wasn't making people poorer? Are you arguing that corporations pay a higher labor rate(ie in the US) out of good will so long as it makes some profit?

I wasn't trying to turn the conversation that direction. Apple isn't evil, Apple is corporate, which is why it struck me that their 1984 Super Bowl commercial is a little ironic in todays' tech world.

"Hey man, corporations are people too."

and it's not just apple's fans who seem to hold apple up. apple themselves claim to be a company of social responsiblity. similar to google's "do no evil" despite them inventing new accounting to avoid billions of american taxes.

When the money gets big enough, it becomes a life of its own, it doesn't matter what logo it has. If Jesus accumulated 50 billion dollars, no way in hell would he have given it all up.

i'm all for people making as much money as they want and i support apple's right to pay their chinese workers 1/5th of the american poverty line. i would think that many on this board, particurally the "tax the crap out of the rich" crowd, would have a problem with it. i guess they pick and chose which things to be upset about.

If 5 chinese people can survive on the pay of 1 american, then maybe america has too much.

Do you see Americans flocking to China for a better life? Me neither! When your average American doesn't have a job to afford an IPAD then maybe Mr. Jobs will figure it out that it's more important to put food on your table and a roof over your head than some kind of device in your hand.

Well, I suppose the follow-up question is: Have you ever been to China? I have, and so has the satirist David Sedaris.

I found it to be polluted, crowded and authoritarian. It seemed that unless you could stomach making a ton of money on the backs of a large amount of desperate people it wasn't a very fun place to be. I'm sure much of China is beautiful, but I just found it's city centers distateful. It reminded me of Russia in the mid-90's without all the non-state related violence. I imagine that China will take a similar, if not more prolonged route as Russia and their oligarchs.

I would never trade what I have here for what 10 Chinese have back in China.

Not sure what you mean by DJ app maybe Disk Jockey app? If so I'm not sure you might check the android market ;-) As far as docking there is not one that I know of, I have a case that stands my nook up, I also have a Bluetooth keyboard but don't use it too much. The nook doesn't have a camera or gps either. The stock nook isn't that great but as I mentioned, I have a rooted nook with cm7.1 rc installed, it's basically a customized version of android created by a group called cyanogenmod. It does take some time an effort to root and install the different version of android but it's not that hard. If you're looking for something out of the box I would definitely go with an ipad or other android device but to each his own ;-) I looked at going that route but couldn't see paying $699 for an ipad when I could get a nook color for $249 and a32gb micro sd card for $40. Also if it breaks (I have a five year old) I can replace it fairly cheaply. Here is a link to a good article.

1.3 billion chinese people living like americans would wreck the earth. Add another billion Indians, we'd have to wreck Mars.

If you add a billion people to America, we might look a lot like China.

Not sure what your point is but this obviously shows that adobe succumbs to demands to deliver flash created video thru a non flash enabled devices rather than fight for devices to be flash enabled. All aligned with what I had mentioned previously of adobe giving up the fight with apple.

It is a full-fledged utopia if you compare it to what it was 20 or 30 years ago, when the half-billion strong chinese middle class did not exist.

Totally agree. I first visited China in 1980. The living conditions in Guangdong Province were abysmal. The government took us on a hospital tour. Unbelievably backwards. Compare that to the same region today and there is no question the average standard of living has improved dramatically. Why? Tech companies. To say nothing of all the money that flows back to the hinterlands from the workers. Would I prefer to live there and make those wages? No. But that's not the right question.
