This year would have been a good one to do something like that.

my guess is it's either ucla or usc that's playing in japan.

1987 - Cal 17, Washington State 17.

I went with the Cal. Alumni Assoc and I believe it was $1000 for a plane ticket, game ticket, and 6 nights at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. I think I added $700 more for 2 nights in Seoul, and 4 nights in Hong Kong. All 3 cities had alumni receptions with the local alumni. It was a lot of fun.

When we were in Tokyo, one of the Korean Airline planes disappeared over southeast Asia. It was later determined that the North Koreans did it. Needless to say, the security at the Seoul airport was very tight.

I think Cal will be keeping road games and especially neutral site games to a minimum with the new stadium opening. It's going to be a hot ticket for a few years and for that period, extra home games mean a lot of extra money and happier donors - if one's giving $5k or $10k - hell even $800-$1200 per - 7 games instead of 6 or 5 is a just something that would be nice.

If that plane had landed in Seoul, it was supposed to be my flight back to the US. I spent a lot of time with my aunt trying to book new tickets to LA.

That was an eventful trip to Korea for me, earlier that year an NK Mig defected tripping all these alarms that made me (as a young boy) think the Korean War was starting up again and that I would not be returning home...

as cool as that trip would be, don't think i want to see cal participating in this one with the way we have played on the road the past few years, especially against a gimmicky offense (see nevada, 2010). travelling that far for a game, especially with HI only having to travel half the distance, would probably make that a huge advantage for them, and could set our guys back a full week or two from a recovery standpoint.

on the other hand, with the DBs we've been pulling in the past couple years (and lined up to get this year), our beastly DL, and the coaching of Tosh, Clancy and Ambrose, HI would probably be a favorable matchup for us. it'd be interesting, but i'd rather err on the side of caution.

Where do we sign up?

If it is the opening game of the 2012 season, then Cal would have all summer to get ready mentally for a game in Tokyo and maybe arrive a week early to soak in the sites and get acclimated physically (to quell the fears of jet lag).

Offensively speaking, I don't see HI stopping Cal's Lasco and/or Bigelow next year. Hawaii's defense is quick but small and I've seen them pushed around in the trenches, let alone stopping guys with track speed.

Hawaii will be breaking in a new QB next year and Cal's D can his debut an epic fail.

I say Cal wins by pulling away in the second half, like a typical De La Salle game against a decent opponent.

Count me in, if it happens! I haven't been back to Japan since 2009, and it would be great to be there with other Cal fans!

Yeah, after this coming season, the last thing we need is a flight to Japan to disrupt our season...............

My son is a frosh at Hawaii so I was there last week dropping him off (yes, being a parent does have *some* benefits...). The dorms are very close to the practice field (all practices are open) so I watched a few practices.

  • Maybe it's the heat and humidity but the players were not very active in the practice. Lots of walking around, not moving much.
  • The QB doesn't appear to be very accurate, doesn't appear to have a good zip on the ball.
  • The defense dominated the offense in the practices that I watched.
  • The "speedsters" on offense didn't seem to be that fast to me
  • I didn't check the stat sheets, but both the OL and DL seem small to me.

While I was there, there was some talk about them getting into the Pac12, especially with Larry talking recently about the "Pacific Rim expansion" (I think he was referring to getting the olympic sports on TV and the internet). They all agree that they don't have enough sports programs, fan base is too small, and don't travel well to be seriously considered for the P12.

At the time, there was the rumor of them getting to the game in Japan. The thought at the time was it was going to be a P12 school and they were/are hoping for a more high profile school in the conference (not WSU) so they can:

  • show they can play with the big boys
  • show they belong in a BCS conference
