Cannon (and yes, I am sure a booth)

It must be late August as I found myself deeply concerned today during my AM commute about whether there were plans to have a cannon at AT&T. On a related worry - does anyone know the plans for how the WORLD FAMOUS California marching Band will take the field at the start of the game? Seriously - I am not sure it IS Cal football without a grand entrance on a beautiful fall Bay Area Saturday without the Band emerging from the North Tunnel.

Yes - my AM commute can be boring.

Due to budget concerns and limited space:

anyone know if Dick Callahan is on board too? last i heard he and cal hadnt' reached an agreement.

What do you mean "hadn't reached agreement"? You mean that guy has leverage? I thought he was still working the mic solely due to the loyalty of the university. Sometimes you need to know when to fold'em. The basketball announcer didn't know when to hang up his tennis shoes so they had to heave him years ago to bring in the present hoop announcer with all the energy. If DC is holding out I would jump on that as a golden opportunity. Next you will be telling me that Joe Starkey is holding out. The only way they are getting the mic from him is to pry it from his cold dead hands.

I know he is old but let me tell you, there is something deeply comforting to be stuck driving to my inlaws upon the endless I-5 during our winter pilgrimages from SoCal and hearing Joe yell "What a Bonanza" and seeing my wife not get it. The day that they pry the mike lose will be a sad day.

God I need football NOW!

he does it basically for free, but apparently they want to put him in a place where he feels he wont see the action.

That's basically it. I met him a few months ago at a restaurant in Danville and asked him if he would be doing the games. He wants to do it, but only if he could be located around the 50. He was the announcer for an Emerald Bowl several years ago, and said it was difficult for him and his spotter to do the game from baseball press box (which in the football configuration is low and in the end zone).

I hope he does it, and not Renel (Giants announcer).

Well I know it won't be at Candlestick, they're trying to cut down on gunfire after last weekend.

I can't use the words "comforting" and "Starkey" in the same sentence. This is not considered a legitimate criticism of a broadcaster, but here goes: You would like to think that the announcer for your team's games would be more of a "homer." Joe is so negative that he writes Cal off at the first sign of adversity. I like a guy like Greg Papa who week after week has to announce for a losing franchise yet he always keeps the fans bucked up with a positive, never say die, attitude. Joe seems like a quitter to me and I never liked playing on teams with guys that laid down like dogs when the going got tough.

I talked to Rally Comm people on Cal Day while they were packing up the cannon from a demonstration by Doe Library and yes, the cannon will make the trip to AT&T.

That was 4 months ago, hopefully nothing has changed. :gobears:

Ah, they use the cannon now to quell on-campus demonstrations. I see.
