We pay our coach less than either USC or Oregon, and those are the only two teams to win more than 72 games since Tedford has been here.

dude, don't do it... you know how this will turn out....

Actually chippy makes almost exactly as much as Tedford. Less if you count the retention bonus.

Somewhat true.

Tedford's salary is a $2.3 million perpetuity. Even looking at his record recently, Tedford is not that overpaid (hack coaches make $1.5 million). If you count what he's done for the school, it's about right. What I don't like is any coach having more then 2-3 years of guaranteed money past the current year. It might get worse with the new TV contracts being thrown around too.

I just want to chime in here. Some of you guys flat-out complain too much.

Cal has been facing a stacked deck since Coach Tedford and later Sandy B. got here.

1. We've had embarassing, decrepit facilities which desperately needed to be rebuilt.

2. We had to deal with foul and parasitic tree sitters for a LONG time which held up this whole process.

3. We have to relocate our team for a year.

4. We have had a conference merger. The CU game is no longer an OOC game so we had to schedule Presby which hacked some people off.

5. We had to switch Fresno State to Candlestick because the Pac Bell park folks call the shots at their stadium, not Cal.

Here is why Cal fans should buy tickets to the Fresno State game.

1. To show we are avid fans of our football team, and to support them through thick and thin.

2. When Bowl game committees or other big name opponents evaluate us on how well our fans travel or support the team, this might not be a feather in our collective caps if we blow this game off. (And it will certainly look bad on network if we are overwhelmed at a closer to Berkeley than Fresno State site by FSU fans).

3. Tedford realized our shortcomings and gutted his coaching staff to make the team a better, more competitive team.

4. These guys have been working their hearts out all summer. Every time I run by the weight room set-up at Witter the players are all up there working their asses off to the bone.

5. I think the team's morale needs a lift to get off to a good start. Fresno State is not chopped liver and will give us a sense of whether our team has some positive surprises in store for us.

6. We have been called the "best fans" by the players. We need to step it up as those fans and support this team.

We would go if we could afford it. Sure, we would have resented the price considering the quality of the opponent and Cal's recent struggles, but we would have gone nonetheless. For us, we just can't afford it right now. We are really bummed, but that is just the way it is.

This isn't Sandy;s fault. She didn't create the present economy. But on the other hand, she doesn't seem to fully comprehend that expensive tickets and parking are tough for a lot of people right now. Her emails seem oblivious to this.

It is what it is...

And, Golden One, Calling someone NOT a Cal Fan because they can't show up for this game is insulting. My wife was in the stands with 4 seconds left in '82, which means she didn't have a clue what happened. We have had season tickets since 1989 and I have missed probably 6 games during that period - when my Dad passed away in Arizona in 2000, when I was in Mali west Africa for work in 1989-90 (that's a 24 hour commute - one way). My wife went to those games I couldn't make except when she decided to stay home with our daughter who died shortly afterwards from SIDS. Your comment was assinine.

I am sure 'they' (Candlestick management) had Cal by the short hairs. We needed a venue and Candlestick was the only viable choice...I don't know why the Coliseum wasn't chosen, but that is another thread. Plus, I am sure even at $90 Cal doesn't make that much money (or at least we get to stick it to the Fresneck fans who will show up in huge numbers). Going or not going has nothing to do with being a 'true' Cal fan...I am arguably as big of a Bear supporter as anyone I know, and $90 is a drop in the bucket of my Cal expenditures...and for a litany of reasons, Including hating EVERY game I have ever been to at Candlestick, I am going to watch the game from someplace else...likely the Public House, gearing up for the season at ATT. This is a transitional season and we have to suck it up while we get a new home. Games at the Stick and the one vs. Presbyterian remind me of the saying...Sh!t happens.

So your definition of "suck it up" is to not go to the game because you don't like the venue. I know that you're a huge CAL fan. But you say the price of the ticket is nothing and you acknowledged we all have to suck it up... and then you don't go. I don't get it.

Unfortunately, for several reasons, I think we stand a very, very good chance being blown out in this game. Think Nevada, but worse.

From our perspective, this game is a bad deal all the way around.

There is going to be a blow-out all right but you have the teams reversed. Cal is going to be a lot better than people think.

I agree. JT knows that this sets the tone. He will not back off. He will throw the kitchen sink in and not let up.

I think this says more about cal fans in general than JT or Sandi. Not being able to get more than 10k fans to your first game of the year, when you are technically the home team, is down right embarrassing. Way to support the squad cal fans.

No, "technically" it is a neutral game.

Cal_Fan2;551986 said:

Quit whining...how old are you?....Sandy Barbour is the best AD Cal has had in decades....we've accomplished more under her watch then I can remember...

Possibly the best since the legendary Brutus Hamilton.

LafayetteBear;552045 said:

True. But I think she can be blamed for pricing tickets at $90 per. This is Fresno State, not USC.

Ticket prices are a huge problem, particularly considering the venue and opponent.

UCBerkGrad;552155 said:

I know, right? He never gives us anything in return. Well except...

...3 wins away from being the winningest Cal HC ever
...7-2 in Big Games
...longest Bowl streak in Cal history
...created a winning program from a team that had been in the abyss

oh, yeah, and both Tedford and Sandy were able to build the SAHPC and have Memorial remodeled.

But you are right, all they do is take, take, take! They need to give back to us....I want more!!

Good point, but other than that what has JT done for us????:sarc:

For my family of 4 to get decent seats:
- $360 tickets + fees
- $25 parking (or more?)
- food/drinks

$450-500 for a college football game = deal killer.

Even more for those of us 300+ miles away.

UrsaMajor;552293 said:

A few comments. I'm not sure why someone who has missed only 4 games in 60 years would find the Presbyterian game so loathsome. Really? That much worse than UOP (in the year before they gave up football)? Sacramento State? UC Davis?...

UOP was one of our local rivals for many years, along with St. Mary's (and, much later, San Jose State). Davis is a sister school that everyone knew would spark interest. Presbyterian is a team and school than many never knew existed. Moreover, there is more interest when playing a game in Memorial because attendance involves returning "home" to Berkeley.

If we get blown out by fresno we might struggle against the blue hose. Fresno is among the worst teams we have on the schedule and the venue is close to home.

I hope the AD offers significantly marked down (if not free) seats to students. It will increase our attendance and maybe spark interest in the team that will carry over to the five home games in AT&T.

WOW! This has been one hell of a thread. Many legitimate points made on both sides of the argument. All in all, Sandy has done a very good job as our AD. Jeff has done a very good to excellent job as our head football coach.

Their is one major thing missing in our Athletic Department though......

Nobody, in the department, especially our Athletic Director has the first clue on how to market our product. That includes such things as scheduling and how you price the product. I have always felt that Sandy has never grasped the difference between Notre Dame and Cal, two very different animals. For this reason she has never hired a professional marketing executive to fill seats and properly promote the product other than just depending on the won-loss record of the teams. Let me put it another way. Where would this program be if the football team had not performed well very early in Tedford's time here. Would we all be singing the praises of our Ad today? Hell, we have one of the best Basketball programs in the Pac 12 and we can't put anybody in the stands. There has to be a reason. Figure out the problem and fix it. I don't see that kind of urgency in the Athletic department and something tells me Sandy is not the "business executive" all of her degree's would point her out to be.

In the end this has been one of the longest threads I can remember which if nothing else points to a huge division in the fan base at Cal.
