He would probably be a heisman contender in chip kelly's offense. Just the wrong fit football-wise for us.

I've known a lot of Cal athletes in my 15 years here, and have never been more proud of one than Joe Ayoob.
He faced a crapstorm of negativity. I remember once a couple of coeds who did not know him, approached him on Sproul Plaza and asked if he was Joe Ayoob. He said "Yes" and in unison they chanted YOU SUCK. Joe kept his composure and walked away. The year after his collapse he tried hard to get his starting job back -- he worked with people to address his weaknesses, he tried and he tried, and while he never got that starting job again, he kept trying and never once whined or complained about the tough deal he had.
He graduated. He didn't assault any women. He didn't take money. He didn't cheat. He is one of the most honorable men I know, and these days I consider him a good friend.
Joe went thru more crap in public that most of us will ever face in our lives, and he stayed strong and true and never quit.
He's a good man.

And his name is Booya! spelled backwards. Just how cool is that?

Thanks, good to hear.

The last name Ayoob. What is that ethnically?

For better of for worse, I liked Joe. Never did him complain during his tenure at Cal. He got his degree. He clobbered UW at UW. Beat UofA. And led the comeback against WSU with the TD pass to Layrelle(sp?) Cunningham. Apparently he beat Illinois to, but I have no recollection of that at all.

The guy always acted like a man and never like a whiny bitch like a certain former Cal QB who will remain unnamed to protect the guilty.

Perhaps you both misheard the coeds and missed out on an epic night.

Agreed. Ayoob was tossed into the fire (spread QB in pro-set, no experience) and unfortunately he didn't do well but he stuck it out, got his degree, didn't complain.
It's easy to measure the winners and tag the losers but life is a bit more complex then that.

....If I were Ayoob's parent, I would be more proud of a son that graduated from Cal; than of a son who played a few years at a Div.2 school.

Life is full of winners and losers. Joe did not make it on the field. But apart from that he is a winner in the game of Life.
In some ways I have more respect for Ayoob than for Sweeney who left Cal to play for a Div.2 school.
He passed up a scholarship at Cal.
What does he get from playing Div. 2.
Maybe some temporary satisfaction of being on the field a year or two more.
If I were Ayoob's parent, I would be more proud of a son that graduated from Cal; than of a son who played a few years at a Div.2 school.

It's not inconceivable that Sweeney would want to follow his father and grandfather and go into coaching after college. If so, the experience of competing for QB1 (even at D2) would be invaluable. At best he would have been 4th string this year, which would not get him the reps or time with coaches to develop his knowledge of the game.
The individual choices made by Ayoob & Sweeney may have been the right ones for them. They are members of the Golden Bear family who do not deserve our disrespect or ridicule.

Cal would have beaten UCLA at Pasadena as well if our special teams did not keep punting the ball to Maurice Drew and have only 10 players on the field when UCLA faked a punt and ran the ball on 4th down. We rushed for 330 yards and Joe passed for 215 yards on 18 completions out of 35.
