35 minutes ago - by John Breech - Tedford doesn't see RB Bigelow playing
After practice Friday, coach Jeff Tedford was asked if highly touted four-star freshman RB Brendan Bigelow would play this season. "Depends, but right now it would be no," Tedford said. Bears RapidReports

i was looking forward to seeing him run by everyone but it looks like I'll have to wait a year.

That has always been my hunch....just think what a stud he will be next year though....

Yeah, i guess there are too many bodies at RB already. Besides the top three, Isi, CJD and CJA, there's Yarnway and Manuel and maybe even T Briggs.
I haven't heard Lasco mentioned much so I'm guessing he may also get red shirted also.

this is GREAT for us

cj and cdj are looking increasingly awesome (apparently) and might take isi's spot come a few games into the year....our rb's will be fine

Bittersweet. We'll just have to wait for the magic. Can't wait to see him out there.

Nobody has given any indication that Isi's spot is at all in question, nor has anyone said the other two guys are looking "increasingly awesome". Have I missed something? Link?

there is alot of talk right now about CDJ and CJ looking great.

From Ryan Gorcey, and Tedford.

My speculation about Isi, is only because I haven't heard necessarily anything that great of late (except he's apparently the hardest kid on the team to tackle) is just that speculation.

But of recent Tedford has been praising CJ ---and CDJ

I'm working I can't go research.

If someone would help me though

The answer Tedford gives here is "Depends". Depends on what? Hard to say, he doesn't tell us.

I did not expect Bigelow to crack the rotation at RB once it became obvious that CDJ and CJA were here to play. However, I still think it's very possible he gets on the field in a limited set of packages, with the goal of putting him in a situation where he can flourish: in space, with limited responsibilities other than just running the ball.

Obviously, the "if it were today" part means he still has to improve before he will see the field. But until Tedford says "no" to the question "will Bigelow play this year" I remain skeptical he will redshirt. But, we will see.

I agree, except I think it is the opposite--he is redshirting until Tedford decides he isn't, i.e., he is inserted into a game. Tedford won't do that lightly, he is waiting until he is sure Bigelow will be able to make a significant contribution even if it is as the #4 RB (see Forsett in 2004). "Depends" could be Bigelow's development, it could be injuries to other guys, it could be the development of other guys.

Update from Okanes.....

Quote:

It's been apparent since the end of the first week of camp that heralded running back recruit Brendan Bigelow was far from contributing. His knee may be completely healed but he hasn't been able to cut loose and run completely hard on it yet, he's still digesting Cal's system and he is shaking off the cobwebs of not playing football for almost two years.

Bigelow is playing on the scout team now, meaning he's far from playing. Jeff Tedford doesn't ever have to say Bigelow is redshirting. He can just not play him and once the second half of the season comes along, we can draw that conclusion. But unless Bigelow starts making much bigger strides soon and that will be hard to do on the scout team it looks like he won't be playing until 2012.

Tedford didn't completely rule out Bigelow playing this season when asked about his status today, but he said it's not likely. The only way I can see him playing is if the Bears incur injuries to one or two of their backs and they pull him off scout team for depth purposes. Even with that, he still has guys like
Dasarte Yarnway, Daniel Lasco and Mike Manuel with which to contend.

i just thought BB redshirting was almost a given. why else would we take a walk-on and a JC in manuel and CJ?

it was too optimistic to expect BB to be able to contribute immediately
