Cal 34-FSU 10
our DL mauls their OL, stuffing the running game and wringing up 5 sacks on little Carr, who throws 2 Ints as well. CDJ gashes the defense for 2 long runs, and maynard throws 2 tds-1 int. i'll throw in a return TD for good measure.
UO 13- LSU 17
a nail-biter. LSU's DL does the same number that ours and Auburn's did, disrupting that OL that returns only 2 starters. Thomas looks like he did against us, pedestrian as a passer, although LMJ does break off 2-3 long runs (the guy's a beast) and finishes with 120 yards. Oregon's D doesn't have the star power and experience to stop a different look LSU offense with a much improved passing game due to the suspension of Jefferson. misfortune turns out to be a blessing as Lee proves to be a much better QB than Jefferson, and UO can't overcome the losses they sustained on the OL and D in a heart-breaking loss at Cowboys stadium. After the game, Kenyon Barner initiates a fight with several LSU players. 6 arrests for aggravated assault are issued, and a police raid catches 12 players from both teams at a smoke-out party after the game in possession of marijuana. interestingly enough, no suspensions are handed out by either team and comments from the coaches include statements such as "boys will be boys", and "you should've seen the parties I went to in college".
ND 7- USF 10
USF pulls out an extremely close one in south bend for the first big upset of the season. Kelley's offense can't solve the speed of USF's D. the ND D is stout and keeps the USF offense in check, but a late FG breaks a tie as the 20 USF fans in attendance rush the field, running over the little ginger leprechaun mascot in the process.
UGA 21-BSU 24
a dog fight to the end, Kellen Moore leads BSU past a stingy GA D as a rally drive by Murray falls short with an INT. Murray nearly matches Moore all game long, showing that he is the best QB in the SEC, and the nasty GA D holds Heismann candidate Moore in check for more of the game, but can't stop him when they need to in the 4th quarter.
Stanfurd 55- SJSU 14
SJSU is not Davis. Luck plays until halftime, gashing the SJSU D for 350 yards on 80% passing and 5 TDs to Owusu, Fleener and Ertz. Wilkerson and Taylor each add a TD. Ugh.
Baylor 21-TCU 20
Griffin leads an under-rated Baylor team to an upset of BCS buster TCU, as their new QB can't follow in Dalton's footsteps. The TCU D makes it interesting with a fumble recovery for a TD, but Griffin emerges as a legit Heismann candidate in week 1 with this huge upset.
Houston 24- UCLA 17
The beginning of the end for Neweasel, as Houston throws all over UCLA's secondary. An ineffective pistol attack manages only 120 yards and 2 TDs, although Owa stands out for the UCLA, scoring 3 sacks in a losing effort.
MD 28- UM 7
Experienced QB O'Brien leads the Terps past an under-manned Hurricanes team that lost 8 players to ineligibility over the last week due to NCAA investigations, including 7 projected starters. The nightmare season for Miami starts with a soul-crushing loss to MD in which the athletic backups can't execute against a well-coached Edsall MD team.
SMU 42-TA&M 49
SMU puts a scare into a distracted TA&M team and almost pulls off the upset with their June Jones run air arial attack. The TA&M can't stop the run & gun offense, but the Aggies inflict similar punishment on the Mustang D and have the ball last, running out the clock with a bruising 6 minute drive to finish the game. All the talk of leaving the Big 12 has definitely been on the minds of the Aggies, and they barely pull off the win in a shootout against an unorthodox SMU offense. The Aggie D really misses Butkus Award winner Von Miller, showing that they have a lot of work to do replacing him on the defensive side of the ball. What could be a promising last year in the Big 12 starts off shaky in College Station.
An exciting rollercoaster NCAAF season starts with a great first day of games!
