Why I hate the PAC 12

I'm putting together a table of all the PAC-12 games for 2011, using the normal abbreviations for most teams (Arizona State = ASU, Univ Southern Cal = USC, etc.), plus Cal for us, and Stan for you-know-who.

Well, now I gotta include two more teams. The University of Utah's abbreviation (UU) not only looks silly, but it makes me think that I keyed in the wrong letter by mistake (I keep thinking it is a section in Memorial Stadium).

But what is worse is the Buffalos from Boulder, Colorado: their abbreviation becomes "UC", and that, IMO, is just plain wrong.

You could always use the abbreviation that they use for themselves -- CU.

Or use one of the hundreds of similar tables that are on the internet.

Shouldn't Utah's abbreviation be....Utah.

It's no longer than UCLA.

I find FUCLA rolls off the tongue easier than U.c.l.a. So does Southern Branch.

But sure. Utah is just as short.

I have no problem with FUtah (which I believe is pronounced "Eff You-tah"). But do we hate them yet?

I don't pretend to understand it:

Larry Scott really should have considered this issue before going ahead with expansion.

Quite a number of years ago, I saw something on TV about CU and someone at the school said they went with CU to distinguish from UC.

This reminds me - fun facts: in the all-time series amongst all the teams, Colorado ranks fourth at .534 (68-59-4). However, Cal maintains its 7th place ranking (.470 winning percentage) because Arizona dropped from 6th to 9th due to its stellar 1-12 record vs. Colorado and 15-19-2 record vs. Utah. Utah's .391 record (in 196 games, 57 of which are against Colorado) vs. other Pac-12 teams is good for 10th, ahead of OSU and WSU in that order. Cal is 3-2 all time vs. Colorado and 4-3 all time versus Utah. Cal has a winning record against 6 teams in the conference now, and a losing record vs. 4, although that 4 are the teams everyone likes to beat (USC, UCLA, Furd and Washington). The series vs. Arizona is tied, 14-14-2.

There's always the postal abbreviation for Utah, UT. Since Texas isn't in the conference there's no confusion, though every time Utah loses you can pretend it's the Whorns who were clown stomped.

Forgot the best fun fact: Utah is 3-3 all time versus SLC High School.
