My very first game as a CAL student

I am a lifelong Cal fan and have been to probably 50 football games, but yesterday was my first game ever as a University of California, Berkeley student!

It was really too bad about the student section. It was quite a hassle for me and my five friends to get to the game so I can understand why a lot of people didn't bother. They should have offered MUCH cheaper student tickets ($5-10) and a FREE bus if they really wanted us to go. All in all, a pretty sad fan gathering, with mostly FSU folks. We had a pretty good time but I am hoping games at AT&T are better. Being able to take BART/MUNI there will be a big improvement over fighting traffic on a slow bus. Anyways, glad we won and that I am a student for 5 years so I can go see them at the best place to play football on earth for the next 4 years.

Couple of quick thoughts:
-Our D is so great and so fun to watch. I love to see them forcing errors all over the field and getting into the backfield. The forced fumble and subsequent rumble were awesome.
-I was terrified after the first possession, but we quickly got it in gear. After Maynard got over the first game jitters, he was fun to watch.
-Candlestick needs to be demolished ASAP
-Why is beer $10

Ha ha as I said (in part) on the other thread...

Can't wait to see what your thoughts are after sitting in the new Memorial's student section as several generations before you have done. Awesome that you made it to the game at the Stick! You'll find beer drinking much easier and cheaper when the games return to Cal. (If you need tips on how to sneak beer into Memorial, PM me at that time...some things need to be passed on through the generations).

GO BEARS!

Don't worry about the $10 beer- you'll be long graduated by the time you can buy beer at a Cal game again.

It sounds like ur family is full of Cal fans.

Lucky...my dads and his whole family is from Ohio and went to Ohio St.

The next two years is going to be awkward, but I plan on wearing as much CAL gear as possible when I fly to Columbus next September

CalFan- Congrats on your first game as a student! Last year was my first year as a student in the stands after being a life long fan of Cal Athletics. Let me know if you have any questions or need help with anything for school. Or just want to play xbox not in a small dorm room.

It is a big difference from being a fan (pre-college) to being a student. You feel that much more invested in the entire process...enjoy these years, and Go Bears.

AT&T will be much better, rest assured. It will be a fun year.

Hey guys. Thanks for your kind responses. I am actually a grad student so I am of age No need to worry about being in a small dorm room-- I have a nice place in North Berkeley grad student territory. I am enjoying myself here so far, and even though the workload is big, so are the rewards. Go Bears!!

Hope you have a great time watching games in the student section in future games. BTW, you set yourself up for the beer question! Go Bears

Thanks GB. Will there be an actual student section at AT&T; and do you know where it will be? TIA.

5-year plan?! i love it. i gave myself four years and wanted to get on with my life. looking back in hindsight, that extra year would have been a good time especially if i had a new Memorial to go to at student prices.

Average (and probably 25 percentile) graduation time for a PhD is 5 years

If I had hung around any longer I would have enjoyed an all expense paid trip to Vietnam <grin>

I think BART and MUNI trains take you right to AT&T

Ooops, didn't realize you are a grad student. Assumed you are an undergrad.

Also thought PhD had an average of six years to complete.

Obviously you were not a student during the Vietnam War. All of us who were were very happy to stay an extra year as a student before joining the real world.
Olive Drab fatigues and combat boots were then in fashion for young men of military age.
And ROTC was preferable to "One Eleven Bravo" -- Military Occupation Specialty for "Rifleman".

Nice. I'm in North Berkeley too, near Foothill. What department are you in?

Treasure it my friend and every one you attend in your time at Cal. Some of my fondest memories were made in Memorial.

Not if it meant you were eventually put in command of a platoon in Vietnam, from what I've heard.
