I have not seen this article posted before and apologise if a booth.

There are a lot of interesting things in the article, but a couple that especially caught my attention were:

Quote:

To call the proposed 16-member leagues "superconferences" is a painful misnomer... It's not good for the athletes, the coaches, the alumni or the general fans.

College football's enduring appeal includes history, tradition and regional rivalries, all of which are currently being spit on by the warring conference commissioners and duped university presidents, a group that likes to refer to itself as the "guardians of the game."

Quote:

And the impact here on other sports most notably men's and women's basketball could be brutal. Essentially the people who think the BCS is a good idea are threatening the fabric of March Madness.

It may be inevitable, but there are very few positives about any of this...

As I have posted hear before here is the solution: an 8 team play-off based on 8 10-team conferences.

The MAC, Sun-belt, Conference USA, etc become Division I-AA. I know these schools will squeal but most of these "mid-majors" really do not have a chance of being in a BCS bowl. Does anyone really think that Boise State, Cincinnati, and TCU would be undefeated playing in the Pac-10 or Big-10? Unfortunately, to make the 8 10-team conference thing work I had to move the service academies to I-AA. I know there are some other I-A worthy teams that I dropped. Maybe you make it 8 11-team conferences and keep the round-robin conference format. At least that way teams have 5 home and 5 away games in conference. Imperfect, I know but an attempt

The 8 conferences are:

West

Pacific Division - Pac 10

California
Stanford
USC
UCLA
Washington
Washington State
Oregon
Oregon State
Arizona
Arizona State

Mountain Division (Best of Mountain West and WAC)

Utah
BYU
New Mexico
Boise State
Nevada
Hawaii
Fresno State
Idaho
UNLV
Wyoming

Mid-West

North - Almost the old Big-10 with Notre Dame replacing Penn State (better geographic fit)

Michigan
Wisconsin
Michigan State
Northwestern
Ohio State
Purdue
Minnesota
Illinois
Indiana
Notre Dame

South - Almost the old Big 8 with Iowa moved to accommodate Notre Dame above

Iowa State
Colorado
Nebraska
Missouri
Kansas State
Kansas
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State
Iowa
Colorado State

South

East - Almost the old SEC

Tennessee
Georgia
Florida
South Carolina
Vanderbilt
Kentucky
Auburn
Alabama
Louisville
LSU

West - Most of the old SWC

Texas
Texas A&M
Texas Tech
Baylor
TCU
Arkansas
Mississippi State
Houston
Mississippi
Southern Mississippi

East

Atlantic - the ACC

Virginia Tech
Florida State
Virginia
Georgia Tech
North Carolina
Clemson
North Carolina State
Maryland
Wake Forest
Duke

Mountain - The Big East prior to defections and Penn State added

West Virginia
Boston College
Pittsburg
Syracuse
Connecticut
South Florida
Penn State
Miami
Cincinnati
Rutgers

The 8 conferences play-off as follows:

Pacific West vs Mountain West - Holiday Bowl

Midwest North vs Midwest South Fiesta Bowl

These two winners meet in the Rose Bowl (At least this preserves the Rose Bowl as the champions of the West vs the champions of the Mid-West.)

South East vs South West - Cotton Bowl

Atlantic Coast vs Atlantic East - Sugar Bowl

These two winners meet in Orange Bowl

Winner of Orange Bowl meets winner of Rose Bowl for National Championship.

It's wonderful that you have such a well thought-out solution, but would you mind telling me what the problem is that it solves?

So true - the problem is that those divisions/conferences would have unequal media markets and therefore unequal TV money. That's what's driving a lot of the movement now - schools want stabilized revenue streams and large revenue streams. No one is leaving a 12 team conference for a new 10 team conference that makes less far money.

The other way to get those splits is for everyone to all agree to one single body to govern - ie they are all divisions in a super-super conferences where media contracts are centralized. That will never happen because no school in the Big Ten, Pac 12 or SEC will agree to give up their TV contracts and give money to schools that are getting pennies right now.

You do realize that having 4 16 team superconferences accomplishes the exact same thing you are proposing, except unlike your proposal, a 4x16 configuration is actually feasible, right? Yeah, yeah it will be 8 8-team divisions rather than your 8 10-team conferences, but to paraphrase your quote "does anyone really think that New Mexico, Wyoming and Colorado State would be undefeated in 4x16 conference play?"
