The worst stat from UCLA game for Slick Rick...

First let me get out of the way saying that our crowd sucked last weekend, ticket sales are not where they need to be for ATT blah blah blah...

But I don't care who UCLA is playing, the stat of the game is 42685. That was the attendance in the Rose Bowl last night. That is the worse crowd they have had in ages and don't think for a second that goes unnoticed by the AD.

Slick Rick has lost the fans and once that happens you're toast.

Who cares, really? We should stick to our own knitting. I do plan to be at the RB when we play them in late October, and I'll be they'll come to play. Problems or no with their coach.

If you don't care, why comment? We're allowed to talk about other things and, gasp, other team's shortcomings not just our own.

Cal v. Fresno State

UCLA v. San Jose State

It's clear that the California State University schools aren't good draws except in the fantasies of their own delusional fanbases.

Visiting Texas will sell out the Rose Bowl against UCLA next week though.

Keep in mind quarter kids havent started yet so it's a little unfair to judge how many people went to their game vs us, where we did start school and a bunch of frats/sororities went to a rave instead.

and dont give me the transportation excuse, many of these kids paid for buses on their own to go to the rave.

How does Cal students going to a rave reflect on Cal FB, our coach, the status of our program, or the problems UCLA is having, or anything else, for that matter?

During every football game tens of thousands of Cal students do other things, even when it's a sellout game. Some went to a rave - good for them. Doubt many of those students would have attended a Cal FB game under any circumstance.

He's becoming the John Mackovic of UCLA. My worry is they'll give up on RN but decide to show up against us... kind of like Mack's horrible UofA team did in 02. That would be just our luck.

The seating capacity is a little over 91K seats, and they may get over 70K fans for Texas if they are lucky. Down here in LA, everyone seems down on the Ruins, particularly their own fans. Average attendance last year was in the 50Ks, with the only well atended game being SC at 71K. If they can only draw 71K for their major rival, how do they get 91K for a mediocre opponent?

i've never met a truly devout ucla fan. even one with season tickets. it's an event for many of them, not a passion. this is why you see 1/2 of the stadium empty out if teh team is down by more than a td in the 4th quarter.

It's not a basketball school. It's a school that's good at basketball. Big difference. Their hoops crowds suck too.

Okay, okay, so I exaggerated a little, but that was only to make point about Cal State University schools being poor draws as the visiting team except in their wildest fantasies.

Still, upward-to-70K to see the Texas Longhorns is almost double the (visible) attendance of the UCLA/SJSU game.

yes and no. they draw fairly poorly, but the rich alumns care about basketball and are willing to spend the money to keep that program good.

That's true but even that's diminishing. See the renovation of Pauley for proof of that. The financial support for hoops is dwindling too. They weren't able to raise the money to do the renovation that they wanted and had to scale it back and rely in part on student fees to finance it.

By digging / feel. I believe the original post referred to the habit of squirrels of burying acorns and then digging them up later. So I assume the metaphor meant so suggest that if a blind squirrel digs around long enough, it will eventually encounter an acorn (presumably buried by another squirrel) at random.

Of course, a blind squirrel would probably not get to dig for very long, as it would have a greater than normal chance of falling victim to natural dangers. But as a metaphor, such practical concerns can be assumed to be ignored. The purpose is to convey a broader philosophical message and in this case to project the comical aspects of squirrels (and especially the sad undertones of a blind squirrel) onto the Bruins.

As much as we don't like Fresno State, their fans travel quite well and they are very tough to play in Fresno.

That's great if you're a Fresno State Fan traveling to see YOUR own Fresno team on the road.

I'm talking about the HOST team's crowd going out of their way to see a CSU school. For example, the records show that Cal Fan wasn't exactly jumping for joy to host Fresno State and UCLA Fan wasn't too thrilled to see San Jose State play their Bruins. Conversely, Fresno and San Jose would sell-out if CAL or UCLA came to THEIR town.

What's your excuse for San Jose State and San Diego State as must-see marquee visiting opponents?

IMO, our "State" schools are considered "directional schools" to the rest of the Nation, similar to say, Southwest Minnesota State or similar -- not much to get excited about.

Fresno is just a weird "nosy neighbor" exception among State schools. They make a lot of noise and then fade away during the season only to start barking again a year later. They are something right out of a WWF (wrestling) marketing campaign.

it's Texas, there's more than 91K Texas alums living in LA alone. Just the local Texas crowd will take care of the capacity...

Its a 91k plus capacity at the Rose Bowl. The stadium would look half empty with 70k in it. It seems like there's at least 65k there today. I'm not sure what you want or what your expectations are for another team in the conference. Its quite funny really.

Before we start opening our mouths about UCLA's attendance - let's see how many people we draw for the vaunted Blue Hose - then we can start critiquing the San Jose State's, Fresno State's and SDSU's of the world and how they draw. lol

That's Apples and Oranges. For this season, Cal is renting AT&T Park, a stadium specifically designed for Baseball, for it's home games so Cal gets a pass. In Reality, we can start critiquing "the San Jose State's, Fresno State's and SDSU's of the world and how they draw" using data from prior seasons with CMS as the main baseline anytime you want.

If you want to continue with your typical Apples and Oranges line of thinking, how about if we start comparing our attendance vs. Wrestlemania, you moron. I bet that would make perfect sense in your funny little world.

Only a little more than 54K in the Rose Bowl today... For a game against Texas. That is terrible news for Slick Rick. The UCLA community has officially given up on the Bruins led by Slick Rick. This is going to get very ugly for him, very quick.

Agree philly, 30k fans, even against a creampuff, is extremely pathetic. The venue is no excuse for our local fans. I support about 95% of what Xul posts here, but in this case, glass houses...

Philly has an odd obsession with downtalking CAL's support while pumping others' support. Go back and check his posts on how wonderful Fresno State fans are... meantime, attendance in Fresno last night? 27K.

See above re Philly.

But the issue isn't glass houses. I am agreeing with you. 33K fans is abysmal. But I lay that squarely on marketing. It's a game against Presbyterian for god's sake. It's simply inconceivable to charge the prices they charged. The whole season ticket structure was terrible. And on and on...

But UCLA was playing Texas. 54K is simply terrible and what you don't seem to get is I am not commenting on their fan support. I think UCLA has had pretty good support under slick rick. It's a comment on the message they are sending... which is a legitimate message. They are no longer supporting this team. See articles in the LA Times today about it.

This glass house red herring to stop any argument on any subject get tiresome... and I agree with about 95% of what you post too  :gobears:
