Tedford's said a few guys would play this year that haven't yet so we'll see how it goes down but I asked around and it sounds like Bigelow's got his confidence going and his ripped off some nice runs in the last couple weeks in practice. He was real fired up vs. Colorado, really hoping to get in the game.

Wow.....Coach Tedford has earned a scooby snack from me! He just may have injected some excitement in an otherwise dull looking season....

Notice he didn't say he'd play this weekend, though many would assume he would if he's going to play at all this year.

I sense that, too. Didn't JT say that Bigelow can be his best recruit ever? That's saying A LOT.

It's interesting that he's playing so many people. Many who would undoubtably redshirt in prior years. Really feels like he's ramping up for next season and is putting all his eggs there (Maynard, cja, etc). Can't determine if it's because he is worried about his job or he thinks the team can be special.

Things do seem different. I don't know what to make of it.

He's been like that for about 5 years at all times...

His philosophy has always been if a true frosh can bring some unique skill to the field that can give them an edge, he'll play them, even if there may not be a lot of playing time available during much of the season.

The way he figures it is programs that don't get a lot of top flight talent have to milk as much eligibility out of them as possible since they may not get as good a player to replace them but he's confident they'll keep bringing in top talent so he's not worried about four years down the line. He plays for now. It's also a good tool with recruits to see that if they're good enough, they'll play as true frosh and that with Cal, it's not just lip service.

Well, the impression I got from this was a lot different from the other thread. He didn't make a point of talking about Bigelow. He was asked and answered the questions. He said he didn't need to play right away. Not saying Bigelow won't play, but from this, it doesn't sound like its necessarily imminent.

This rumor, or maybe it is fact, was started by Okanes' tweet...

RB Brendan Bigelow is climbing the depth chart, expected to play some Saturday.

That's why I provided the video link. Hearing things from the horse's mouth will often give you a different conclusion than some often jump to. That's why people may often see me disagreeing with "conventional wisdom" on the board and elsewhere.

Logic would dictate that if they intend to play Bigelow this year, they'll play him this week with so little to lose playing against an FCS team, but there was little to nothing offered to indicate it. Same goes for other frosh supposed to play this year like Rodgers and Jackson or seldom-used frosh like Scarlett and McClure and more reps for Moala and Whiteside.

Misquoted.

He said, "he's as good as a recruit as we've ever had."

Meaning, he's as good as the best.

Not the best.

According to the oakland tribune article jt specifically said he could see playing time sat

Here's the story quote: "Physically, it looks like he's made the turn as far as being able to run full speed and cut," said Cal coach Jeff Tedford, who added he's planning to get Bigelow some playing time Saturday. "He feels comfortable doing it."

The problem is, he didn't add that he's planning to get Bigelow playing time Saturday. He wasn't even asked about him playing this Saturday. The closest anyone came to asking about it was when Tedford was asked if he felt he needed to play Bigelow early in the season to justify not using the redshirt and he said, "No, it's a long season."

People are going to believe what they want to believe but the only reason I'm making this an issue is because I'd rather not see people have a cow on the board if Bigelow doesn't play Saturday and complain that Tedford doesn't keep his word when it wasn't his word to begin with.

Just to be clear about where I stand, if Bigelow truly is full strength and has his home run threat back, I want him to play and to play as soon as possible, personally.

In the long run we're all dead. Can't save it for 2 years down the road. That's why you keep recruiting. Play people as soon as you can and recruit someone better for future years. Too many things change or can go wrong to always count on next year or two years from now...

reads to me like wild media speculation, but regardless I have no dog in this fight.

If they do end up playing him I hope for his sake that he truly is healthy and is able to stay healthy, a season ending injury from coming back too early to an athlete of his caliber would be disappointing at best

Look, I'll make this clear one more time. I think he should play this Saturday and I hope he'll play this Saturday but did you even listen to the video? I don't know how anyone could walk away with the conclusion that Tedford plans to or hopes to play Bigelow. It goes against his nature to make that kind of statement and he didn't make that kind of statement. It makes me think that they're all relying on the initial impression written rather than actually listening to their own audio recordings. Maybe because it makes for a better storyline this weekend?

For someone who doesn't like to be told what to think, I'm surprised you'd argue in favor of a phantom comment that was never made just because you're told what Tedford "meant to say."

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Ask yourself this. Why don't ANY of them have a direct quote? Why don't I see "I hope the nature of the game this Saturday lets us get Bigelow some snaps," Tedford said. Not from a single one of them. If he said it, why did all of them go the paraphrase route?

My policy - always ignore "quotes" that are not quotes. It means the reporter thinks he heard something, but upon listening to the tape didn't have the words to back it up. Its all reporter interpretation. In this case, we have the source material and they are clearly trumping up the issue. Let's face it, the quotes that JT gave about Bigelow weren't that exciting. Bigelow suited up for CU. He could play at anytime. Tedford is in no hurry to play him because there are lots of games left. Not quite as exciting as "Bigelow to play on Saturday!"

I have had debates in the past with people about things Tedford (or others) are supposed to have said when people have cited the "quotes" not in quotes and I've argued that the reporter said it not the person. I've often got the "Oh c'mon. It must have been based on something". I'm not trying to be a jerk about this. I've seen it far to often that these things are total bs - in fact, I'd say they are usually bs. Again, I'd say - if they had the quote, it would be in quotes.

I kinda expect Bigelow to play based on circumstances - this should be the game that clears the bench and if Tedford says that he had turned a corner physically AND he traveled and dressed for CU, you'd think the chances are likely he gets in now. But Tedford did not say that.

No, I understand your confusion because so many said the same thing, but as Oaktown said, if he said it, it would be in quotes. It just seems like kind of a pack mentality journalism is in play here.

Sometimes a reporter will catch him individually after he's done speaking to ask for further clarification about something but all of them reaching the same conclusion? I have a hard time believing all of them had the same little sidebar convos.

drunk - I swear I'm not trying to attack you because I understand your confusion. Bottom line, I'm telling you because I've learned this lesson previously - assuming competence from the media gets you into big trouble fast. Quite honestly, the media has about a 90% failure rate when I actually know the story. If I were you I'd look at this, acknowledge that what they are saying makes no sense, and use that lesson going forward.

My guess is that when they were at the interview they thought "Oh my god. Bigelow to play! Breaking story!" Went back to write it up and listened to their tape for the quote and thought "I can't find where he said that, but I WAS THERE! HE SAID IT!" Rather than reevaluating what they thought they heard and reporting what was on their tape, they "paraphrased" what he said to match what they "heard" in the first place.

Sorta backhanded complement to Moraga, but I don't know if Moraga had any formal journalism training, and my assumption is that comparatively speaking he has far less experience than most of the guys working in print. They should be completely embarassed that this "internet guy" just completely puts them to shame in terms jounalistic integrity and professionalism. Because the fact is that he is BY FAR the most professional reporter covering Cal today (and, to be honest, one of the most professional reporters I follow, period).

Sandy most likely told JT that the team needs to put fans back in the seats and SELL OUTS need to happen pronto in order to pay for the Stadium project. Hence, the sense of urgency.

Yes! And even better, Moraga guaranteed it!

I was very surprised when I saw Bigelow suited up on the sideline at the CU game. Given how few players usually travel to road games and suit up, my guess is that even if Bigelow does not play Saturday, he will play soon.
