My opinion of how well this team does this year just changed for the better. Bigs, if healthy, is a game changer. We are talking Javid Best type game changer. Wow.

I love that udub will only have one week of tape to prepare for him, if that. They'll likely be dizzy from a drumming in Lincoln, and Bigs will be blowing by them like a gust of wind.

I think it may be time to pump the brakes on thoughts that Bigelow will be a star in 2011. As much as anyone, I'd love to see him make a huge contribution - 8-10 carries a game, kick returns and some specially designed passing plays, but it's way too early to assume that'll be the case. Jahvid had 29 carries, 13 receptions, 16 KO returns and 3 total TDs in his 10 healthy games as a freshman. To expect significantly more than that from Bigelow before we see him set foot on a field is premature.

Yeah, the hype train does seem a bit out of control. I foresee a jaw-dropping play against Presbyterian setting the hype train out of control followed by collective disappointment and disgruntlement as he inevitably fails to live up to the ludicrously high expectations everyone has for him.

On the other hand... maybe, just maybe, he's that guy that takes Cal from a mediocre season to a pretty good one. Who knows?

Jahvid was considered under-utilized that year.
Jahvid was also running behind an established RB (Justin Forsett) that had 1500 yards that year.
Jahvid was also injured in the USC game, so missing 3 games.

We can hope he's the next Marc Hicks! On second thought, maybe we shouldn't....

He was my tutee this summer in Summerbridge, and this will be my first college football game [I usually work Saturdays, but this year decided to finally go to games]. Can't wait!

Okanes has a few quotes from Bigelow that gives a sense of how much Bigelow is yearning to play: http://www.ibabuzz.com/beartalk/2011/09/14/football-bigelow-quotables/

I'm trying to temper my expectations, but man, I'm excited to see what he can do.

Thanks beesy, it was a douchy comment about Brendan and needed to be called out. Maybe old people should just stay in bed since death is right around the corner for them.

Unit2, you aren't fooling anyone. I've read enough of your posts to know that you are just as pumped up on the possibility of Bigelow being a game changer as the rest of us. Pump your breaks for a second if you feel the need, pull into the fast lane and then put down the hammer-- mass times velocity equals touchdowns.

What really strikes me is that Tedford and the rest of the coaching staff seemed 99% sure (after fall camp) that Bigelow was destined to redshirt this season. Bigelow must have looked beyond amazing in practice for Tedford to turn a 180 (or in Jason Kidd's case a 360) and declare that now Bigelow is all of the sudden going to play.

He's had two ACL injuries in the last year or something? I would say if it's possible for him to do more work to reduce the likelyhood of that happening again he should do it. Is he going to be wearing a brace do we know? He sounds like another Chase Lyman - great talent, but just can't stay healthy. I pray for the kid. It really sounds like another injury is right around the corner for him.

I don't see why folks are getting so bent out of shape about this post. PG (whom I don't know) seems merely to be expressing concern for BB's health. That's a good thing, not a bad thing, and to be distinguished from say a troll coming on here saying "I hope he gets reinjured." Perhaps it was expressed inartfully, but I don't see anything wrong with the sentiment. Sure, if you take that last sentence in isolation, it looks worse than it is but that's not the totality of his message.

You'd think he drew a cartoon of a prophet or something. Gee whiz.

Agree completely. One game against the Blue Hose will elevate Bigs to Best status and it'll be hard for him to live up to that expectation later on. But ... hope I'm wrong!

Haha - guilty as charged. I do think BB can make an impact but given that Tedford almost blueshirted him I wonder whether he'll really feature him the way he did with Keenan, Desean and Marshawn. Their names all sound kind of similar so maybe there's a connection there (all 4 ending in "an" or "awn"). By comparison, Best was brought along much more slowly (never more than a handful of carries per game).

I suspect that Tedford may have been talking about blueshirting Bigelow in order to motivate him to work through his rust a little quicker than he might have had he been used from the get go but it's just a hunch. I never really bought into the idea that he was blueshirting - Tedford didn't have a lot of conviction when asked about it.

Just from reading between the lines...

1. "seemed" 99% sure" (to us) but not REALLY 99% sure

2. "Bigs" admittedly took it up a notch the past two weeks

3. running game can use a little something extra, based on the last 2 games

No, Tedford said from the beginning if he was healthy, strong and confident, he'd play. It wasn't a make or breat situation coming out of fall camp. He just wasn't ready at that point.

When Bigelow wasn't named as a frosh likely to play by the last week of camp, he was just another guy at running back since he was playing tentatively and not standing out. Since that's changed in practice, Tedford will play him.

The only thing that surprises me is that he turned the corner so quickly. I thought if he made it back, it might be a couple weeks later, at least.

Sounds like that the experience at the FSU game make the lights go on in a big way.

I agree with you on expectation, but on the other side of this, Marshawn contributed big time, and the only thing that kept him from at least 1500 yards as a frosh was JJ Arrington. True frosh Marshawn would easily be starting for us.

Best played in a very weak league and at one point was being recruited as an athlete rather than a runningback. I had heard from someone I trust a few games into the season that he had A LOT to learn about the RB position.

I wouldn't expect more from Bigelow than Best gave us, but I also don't think that Best is the limit either. Some guys are more ready than others. But I agree with you that we need to see him play before expecting too much.
