My hopes for a crappy Stanford HC following Hairball...

...just went out the window. New coach seems to have his troops prepared and has that Stanford-esque calm that I hate so much. He'll probably improve their recruiting as well if he relates well to African-American recruits.

:headbang

But who knows, it's early in the season.

We'll see if he can keep it up once the safety net is removed.

Tough teams often do well with the following coach...for a while. It takes time for the tough parts to wear off and the precision to slowly erode. We won't know for a while if David Shaw is good or not. Right now he's flying with a team that is all Harbaugh's and it certainly doesn't hurt to have an All-American QB.

On the same day Cal dismembers the mighty Presbyterian Blue Hose, you get all snarky-like about Stanford's "cupcake" schedule.

Don't tell me we have a Stanfurd poster here again! We though you all became extinct or something...

Ya..it took Gilby a couple years to tear down what Snyder built.

Your schedule sucks. Absolutely horrific San Jose State and a pretty bad Duke team OOC, and you miss both ASU and Utah in the Pac12 South. You have seven home games and five road games. The only good team you face away is USC. The only saving grace is Notre Dame who might end up pretty good by the end of the year.

Yeah, your schedule is really, really light. Cal has the 47th toughest schedule ranked by 2010 opponents winning percentage. Stanfurd? The 105th. Not even close.

Shaw was at best the man 3rd most responsible for the furs offense under harbaugh and he's a bore. This was a horrible hire. Mark my word.

I've heard Shaw be interviewed on the radio. He's no Harbaugh. Nice polite man, but didn't have much bravado or that alpha male quality that HCs usually have.

Agree with drunk, Shaw isn't the guy. Furd will stub their toe along the way. They will face real adversity at some point, and Harbaugh won't be there to emotionally power them through.

Their offensive line still seems dominant. If true that means a repeat of last year.

Right now I'd say that the 'Furd are a lot like the Indianapolis Colts after Tony Dungy left. As long as Peyton Manning was around to be the real "coach on the field," they could still keep winning. But without him they are a mess, and their current boring coach isn't able to pull them out of it.

Likewise, if 'Furd loses Luck they are in a lot of trouble. With him they are still very, very good.

In the last few years under Harbaugh and Luck, they have also gang-stomped Washington in Seattle, donkey-punched USC in the Coliseum, shut out UCLA in Pasadena, and, oh yeah, completely burned down our house last year.

Furd building a stadium in a year after we struggled to do so for awhile? Kinda funny.

Furd doing the same thing with building a monster team? Kinda not so funny.....

We will kick them when they are down, and bitch about them when they are up. Hopefully more of the former. That's not obsession, that's a rivalry.

We're obsessed about expansion, Texas egos, and (for the men on this board) Oregon cheerleaders. Big difference!

Yah, seriously. Hey UNC forumers, quit talking about Duke. Arizona forumers? Quit yer kvetching about ASU. Ohio State? LEAVE BRITNEY (AND MICHIGAN) ALONE! etc. Not gonna happen.

You make it sound like they've perpetually been the James Bond of CFB. Let's keep the big picture in mind here. They're riding the wave of one phenomenal player. After that, they'll be back to irrelevancy.

When Luck leaves and they go back to only recruiting 3 TEs/year, the Furd will slide back into mediocrity...

I seem to remember the same comment being thrown around here regarding Toby Gerhart a year or two ago.

Also, Gilby turned an excellent Cal team into a train wreck pretty damned quickly after Snyder left.

Finally, just as an aside, I remember what a joke Harbaugh was on this board even as he was building up his team (maybe cuz we were still beating him in the Big Games). But it was always, "he's recruiting 2 dozen more tight end's LOL", "what an idiot LOL", and so on. Obviously, those comments stopped during the last year or two. OK, whatever, let's hope Tedford's got his Mojo back with the recent excellent recruiting and return of Coach M and Kiesau and we're ready to make another run. If Oregon falls down a notch and Shaw ain't Harbaugh then it might be our turn...

1992 sucked big time, but 1993 was actually set up to be something special until our two key players on both sides of the ball got knocked out of the game (the UW game that we were winning 24-3 in the 3rd quarter). Such is Cal. Gilby never really recovered from that, although he did have a nice Alamo Bowl beat down of Iowa.

OK, but my point stands. I think we were both at Cal at that time. The year after Snyder left, the team played far below expectations. I remember students being so excited about the team's prospects during Gilby's first year that "Cheat-Dog's Corner" by Chidi Ahanotu was launched as a weekly article in the Daily Cal, but the excitement for it died away quickly as the losses piled up. There was also a Daily Cal article at the start of the football season that year with a quote like "Gilby's been handed the keys to the Rolls - now all he has to do is drive it", which provoked more than a few responses as the year wore on.
