I'm not going to be giving letter grades for this game. Due to the great disparity in talent levels this game can only be graded pass/fail and obviously the Bears managed to pass, although there are definitely many areas of concern.

Offense
Too many penalties. Yes, we scored 8 offensive TDs. Yes, we had nealry 600 yards of offense, but just about every one of the 10 penalties called on Cal was on the offense and was called in the first half when the starters were in. This is just unacceptable and needs to be fixed.

QB
Solid play by both Maynard and Bridgford. Both looked confident in the pocket and were accurate with their throws. Maynard's one INT was annoying, but was a joint error. On an out route like that the WR has to sell the DB that he's running a streak before turning to the outside to prevent the DB from jumping the route. Calvin did not sell it well and Bethel was in perfect position to jump the route. Maynard still should have been watching for the DB to see if he was back far enough to allow the pass to get through.

RB
Sofele got 100 yards, but 40% of that was on 2 good runs. I think he's proved to msot of the fans that he's just not an every down RB. CJ Anderson looked very good on the few touches he had and Bigelow demonstrated the speed he was recruited for. Lots to like here.

WR
Some great circus catches, a great leap by Allen over a defender to make a first down and a great deep crossing patther by Jones and Allen that was turned into a TD. Overall solid performance. The one flag was Calvin being called for one of the 2 face masks on the offense. Not a good penalty to take at any time.

TE
Hagan made an incredible catch for a TD, but once against the tight ends had the dropsies as several passes went through their hands. The most flagrant error was actually on special teams where Miller lines up on the right side of the trio of blockers in the backfield. He allowed Bethel to run past him unblocked on the play that turned into a blocked punt and TD for the Blue Hose.

OL
Penalties galore again including a tripping call and another face mask by a lineman (Schwenke this time.) The group was decent in pass protection and opened up a few nice holes on sweeps, but was inconsistent again. We are seeing improvement, but its slow and with Cal now into the Pac-12 schedule we can't afford drive killing penalities from the O-line.

Defense
Presby got 48 yards and 3 first downs. You don't need to say anything mroe than that. Very good performance even though the D was mostly in a 2-4-5 arrangement.

DL
Cal played with just 2 down linemen most of the game and Presby still got nothing up the middle. The D-linemen even got a couple of sacks thanks to a great push. Nothing more needs to be said.

LB
I didn't see or hear Kendricks name much. Holt was involved in stopping most of the running plays in the first half (he's the run stopping LB, so that's not a surprise.) The OLBs looked good and took much better angles in pursuit than last week against Colorado. This group is still very raw, especially at OLB, but the athletic ability is showing up.

DB
Rarely challenged thanks to the pass rush, Cattouse should again that he has great instincts on his second INT of the game, coming across the field to snatch the ball away. The first INT was a bit of a gift as it went directly to CAttouse thanks to the pass rush. Thsi group didn't show us much, but did lpay solidly.

ST
No blocked extra points against this game. I've posted about the blocked punt in a chat about special teams. Miller should have blocked Bethel and did not for some reason. It looked like a mental error by Miller, which does happen, but shouldn't and can't once Pac-12 play starts if we want to win games. The high kickoffs were short in the swirling wind, but had decent hangtime and Cal was down to cover them quickly. When kicking from the infield Tavecchio used a low driving kick that Presby had trouble with. It was giving them a bit too good of field position, but I'm guessing that the wind made attempting to drive the ball deep with a high kick unwise.

Penalties and dropped passes are my number one concern....after that it is the secondary and kicking....the rest of the facets are pretty good and will get much better with snaps played.....working as a unit together takes some time so I think the OL and DL will progressively start to resemble coherent units.

I like how slant and crossing routes have returned to our playbook.

I though Whiteside had a good game.

Call football seems to have to enough worries that their bowl hopes should incorporate a lot of concerns

Consider the competition and your comments are quite alarming. I think your actually being generous. We'll see how they do against Wash and their monster NT next week.

Biggest concern really is dropped passes. ST? not sure what to say, but we probably can't rely on them to win a game for us (unless Bigelow as KR and PR)

I think we're good enough to beat WSU. We can be competitive with Wash, OSU, UCLA, and ASU. We'll probably get blown out by Oregon, Stanford, and USC. I predict 3 hopefully 4 Pac 12 wins. Next week's game is for a bowl no doubt.

Ta'amu (their monster NT) is playing with a broken hand and has been nothing near his preseason hype.

Thank you for a great critique!
Our penalties in the last few years have concerned me. When Tedford took over, we went from one of the most penalized teams under Holmoe to one of the least under Tedford. Now the penaltyproblem seems to be creeping back into the program. it's a problem that needs to be addressed. Go Bears, Go Blue Hose. Kick butt next week!
