Yeah, so I got an iPhone earlier this year.
Some of the first apps I loaded were KGO and KFOG.

One hour before the game KGO turns off and a recorded message appears, paraphrasing..."SOL sucker, we can't stream due to contract.....get a real radio"

What's this all about?

You're a sucker for buying an i-Phone?:p sorry, but I hate Apple and Steve Jobs.

Chances are that the streaming from the Cal site is the only internet outlet that can carry the game. They had to get a waiver from Fox and ESPN to do it and they do charge a fee for their service.

Honestly, I could not believe this. I have no idea what CAL marketing is thinking they are going to accomplish on this. All your iphone, droid, laptop etc are in this regard are other platforms for a RADIO broadcast... It's just staggering to me that CAL Marketing does this stuff (vis-a-vis IMG or their contracts).

I had the exact same problem. I was driving home from a conference in Chicago, and I was hoping to listen to Starkey until I could get back to my place and watch the game online. But KGO wouldn't let me, because Cal wouldn't let them. I ended up missing the first quarter of the game.

I don't see the reason for this. After so many seasons of subpar performance, I don't understand why the Athletic Department would work so hard to freeze out fans who don't live in the Bay Area. I really think that Sandy is not helping the program with these types of moves.

Having worked in a number of campus non-academic departments, I have come to expect head-scratching decisions that border on ineptitude. Man oh man do I have stories.

When listening to a radio feed of KNBR on my iPhone, it stops when the Giants game starts and only resumes during the post game show..maybe this is standard for all sports broadcasts including Cal??

this must be new because I was in Copenhagen last year for a game and listened online on KGO... and in South Africa the year before and listened to, I think, the ASU game same way. I just don't get it.

I was stuck at LAX waiting for my flight. I paid the $8 and tried to watch the video feed on my ipad but it didn't work; I'm guessing it required "flash."

Then I downloaded an app for .99 to try and listen on KGO, but got a recording that KGO's licensing deal with Cal did not allow them to stream the game.

But then, I tried listening to the stream from the Sacramento station carrying the broadcast and, Eureka, it worked!

Regarding the Giants games, the broadcast rights are owned by MLB and the Giants.

Not sure about Cal but, it's all about who owns the rights.

well, hopefully w/ the upcoming Pac-x digital network, one will be able to get any game at any time on any platform. Hopefully it doesn't cost too much.

KALX streams the games live. You can go to their web site, or the iPhone TuneIn Radio app (free) has KALX also. (TuneIn Radio is one of the best iPhone apps!)

I was also traveling and at airports and expected to be able to listen to the game on the "radio". I guessed there was a way to get the feed through a Cal site, but I was pissed off and wasn't able to listen to the whole game anyway. I feel like I have been way to supportive of cal football to be inconvenienced by stuff like this...

note added in proof: I had downloaded the TuneIn Radio app just for this purpose; I'll definitely try KALX next time.

Sorry, but greed is so rampant that logic takes a beating.

I believe that this wasn't the AD's decision, but a policy of CBS, who handles Calbears all access.

Good thing it's ending after this year, then. It is ending, isn't it?
