I have seen lots of complaining lately about Joe Starkey... Personally, I don't think Joe is very good, so I always listen to KALX 90.7 FM, which is the campus radio station. It is all run by volunteers, many of whom are students. It's hard to get the station on the dial outside of Berkeley, but you can stream online at kalx.berkeley.edu and they also have a free app, which I use to listen on my iPhone! My good friends Beni Shpringer and Danny Freisinger (guy who made the famous call of the baseball game) call a lot of the action, along with some other volunteers. They do a great job and it is really a great alternative to Joe Starkey. Plus, there are no commercials (they play music at breaks). Give it a listen this weekend!

Wow, I happened to tune in on their live stream because I was tired of listening to starkey, and I was actually really impressed with these guys. They knew their stuff, including all the players, much more than Starkey. You could tell they had alot of enthusiasm and were just having more fun.

Definitely agree that it's a solid, if not better, alternative to ole Joe.

Anything's better than Joe. Look, I get nostalgia (and yes, the call of The Play is great). But I got to the point years ago where I just can't listen to him anymore. No down & distance, no explanation of what the blazes just happened... well, you've heard all the complaints before.

I may try the KALX stream on Satiday if the TV guys get irritating. But I boycotted Starkey years ago.

I listen to a lot of football from around the country. Joe Starkey is one of the best and has some nice signature expressions. He is better than most of the NFL broadcaster (and lets not get started on the television broadcast teams). Some of you complaining types should try doing the play-by-play and realize the challenges of announcing.

But KALX is a great resource of our university. Listen and donate.

The Oregon State play-by-play dude (I think his name is Mike Parker) is out-freakin'-standing. Joe isn't even playing Division 1 ball compared to him. I would listen to the Beaver broadcast when Cal plays OSU before listening to Starkey - at least I'd know what the on-field situation is. And even the duck PBP guy, though a puke-inducing homer, is pretty good at calling a football game.

Look, I don't want another 8-mile-long bash Starkey thread, so I'll add no more to this. But I don't agree with your implied assertion that very few PBP guys do that job noticeably better than Starkey. And for the record, whether I could do that job myself with no training is immaterial. I can't throw a spiral worth beans either, but I see nothing wrong with criticizing Alex Smith.

I listen to Starkey while at the game, but I like the idea of trying KALX. Also, I was pleased to see that my iPhone actually works at AT&T park (unlike at memorial, during a game). Thus, I should be able to stream it with an app.

Good to hear that the current KALX sports coverage is good, I'll check it out. Being that it is student run some seasons are better than other...loved listening when Roxy was on KALX.
