Take a look at the measurables of the top twenty safeties. They're virtually all about the same. And this has nothing to do with offering a kicker. If they want to offer one, they have enough scholarships to do so.

The way this thread has evolved is exactly why I never recommend that recruits read message boards.

You can dispute the rest, but it has everything to do with recruiting a kicker. Scholarships are scarce. Everyone who is brought in means someone else can't be brought in. Kickers are not given scholarships out of high school because that are thought to be too risky. The result has been many years of sub-par kicking. I think safeties are not worth scholarships unless they stand out in both play and athleticism and recruiting fewer of them could open a scholarship for a kicker. Nevertheless, I hope Hoffpauir has 5 great years at Cal.

[EDIT] In an effort to try and prevent further derailing of this thread, which should be used to discuss and welcome our new commit, I am deleting my post.

Does not have offers from top 20 schools other than Stanford. Under sized. Does not look fast on tape (not faster than the other guys on the field). With so many schools playing the spread, is he a good enough athlete? Of course I don't know, but is he less risky than a kicker?

Corners can been turned into safeties, so I would recruit fewer safeties. In fact, if it were me, I would recruit one less safety every year and give that scholarship to a kicker.

MB, I think you're being overly sensitive to what's being said here.

Dunno. It's pretty lame that we get a commitment from a guy who is clearly a Plan A recruit, highly ranked nationally at his position, great academics, a stud baseball player to boot and all we can do is pick apart his measurables?? So if he were 2 inches taller he would be a 4*, and we would all be happy? And if he had committed to furd we'd all be fretting about the one that got away.

In addition to being a great athlete, this kid is tough and a hard worker. Those are infectious qualities that our team needs. I can't wait to see him crushing receivers and kickoff returners in the years to come.

I would love to see be a two sport star and put in work for our baseball team as well. He style on the field reminds me alot of Eric Weddle when he was at :bigpuke: utah.

Agree MB. Anyone watch his vids? I have seen vids on this kid and he is a very instinctive player, that makes plays. Straight line speed in shorts is good to have, but what you really want is a player that plays the game at full speed. Hoffpauir plays at top speed, reads plays well and makes plays. He has plenty enough speed to play. Smart kid and a 2 sport guy. Nice addition IMO.

In order to converse with the notorious DO there are times one must venture into the reality that is DO's mind.
