Reminds us of huge improvement just at the QB position. Mansion will probably never play another down of college football after being our starter last year.

For further reference, Mansion struggled against PC There's absolutely no question Maynard is an upgrade from Mansion, and despite his numbers is a more reliable passer than Riley.

With Bridgeford in the wings, who looks to be a strong QB in his own right, Cal finally looks to have a good passing game, now and in the future.

Not getting that either. With his talent, you'd think he'd be itching to play and rise up to the challenge. Obviously he didn't. I'm not sure what went on there.

Because he's clearly not capable of it, at the D1 level, at Cal, for whatever reason. Thus a bad situation.

Particularly telling: "I think his experience in the offense is better than Brock's was last year," Tedford said.

Stevie Wonder could see the difference. I like how he qualified it with "I think," just in case someone out there sees it differently.

Maybe I missed it, but any reason why Mansion is no longer the holder on FGs/PATs? Using Anger may help his NFL prospects, but Mansion seemed to do OK as a holder the last few seasons.

Whether he was ready or not for last season, Brock has been a loyal, non-complaining Golden Bear who has done whatever has been asked of him. Stop ragging on the guy. He did his best and it wasn't good enough. Leave well enough alone.

Sorry, discussing his ability to play or not play is absolutely in bounds. As I said, for whatever reason, it didn't click for him. I have no doubt he's a good guy and will have a lot to be proud of moving forward as he goes on to the next phase of his life with Cal degree in hand.

I have nothing but admiration for him (and for Joe Ayoob, who got a ton of over-the-top vitriol directed his way and by all accounts was also a great guy), not many guys are good enough to have a shot to play Div1 college football. And he's handled being thrown in above his head with class.

JT is tactful as ever with someone who is being shown the door.
Would you prefer him to say: "Yeah, Brock really stunk up the joint last year."
That is not JT's style. And I respect him for that. No sense kicking a guy when he is down.

JT said it's because Anger hangs out with the kickers all the time so it made more sense for him to be holder.

My guess is the conversation went something like this:

Tedford: "Giorgio, you and need Brock need to stay late after practice and get these PATs worked out.
Brock: "Excuse me coach, but I'm a senior whose been twice demoted and I just don't think I'm going to be staying after practice. Happy to help any way I can during practice though"
Tedford: "Fair enough. Somebody get me Bryan Anger"

Thanks. Brock forged a bond, dated Carli Lloyd, and got a great education. Not too shabby.

Brock had abbreviated experience in high school, but was viewed as having the skills to develop into a starting QB in college. Texas was interested in him after they had an injury to one of their QB's, but Brock stuck with Cal. Brock ran the Scout team, but I am not sure he was developed any further. Our QB development has been questionable over his years. Good luck to Brock.

And he has a great sideline pass for all the games. He even hears the play call. Not bad at all. Football's not his life and I am confident he will do well with his Cal degree. Good for him.

Go Bears!

Perhaps it was a coaching problem? Maybe he was looked at with starry eyes, because at 6'5" and a strong arm he was the quintessence of a quarterback. But no one can say he hasn't been a loyal Golden Bear. I just am sick of the carping. It's over. Let's move on.

From JT in the article:

“I think his experience in the offense is better than Brock’s was last year,” Tedford said. “Physically, he’s a little more athletic and you can do more things with him.”

Not sure I buy this. JT should take some culpability in not developing Mansion to the best of his athletic ability. Mansion was a stud coming out of HS. He was 6'4" or 5", ran a spread offense, and I distinctly remember JT being VERY excited about Brock when he committed (from Brock's committment story).

If anything, Brock has better measurables than Maynard. I "almost" think it's better to get under the radar guys or transfers (a la AR) b/c these guys are mentally tougher.

It still amazes me how Maynard just does his thing. He'll throw a 20-30 yard downfield pass falling backwards (he's done that MULTIPLE times). The Elite 11 QBs (or highly touted recruits) have been coddled and seem to cave a bit under more intensive coaching. They become almost scared to make a mistake. Riley used to fling that ball downfield. Last year, it was a lot of dump offs and screens. And don't tell me Riley was not athletic. He was plenty athletic as a RS freshman chucking the ball downfield against Air Force.

Maynard seems to be mentally tough, has good wheels, but does not have a NFL arm. Doesn't matter b/c he plays for Cal. On the college level, I would much rather have a mentally strong QB (Kellen Moore at BSU) than a physically gifted freak (EJ Manuel at FSU).

I think JT was being kind to him, he's still on the team. The kid's a 3rd string QB now, he played Saturday and didn't look all that great against the JV's. He looked good in high school and plays like crap in college.

not sure about the no nfl arm argument. he's still very raw. he's had some throws that looked very NFL to me. he just doesn't set his feet on every throw. JT should be able to improve taht significantly by next year.

There's one throw, I think in the Fresno game, when he threw to Jones, on the run, with both feet in the air, for a TD. That was a beauty! But yeah he should set his feet when he gets a chance.

Did our previous QB holders hang with kickers more than WRs and other QBs?

I think the writer did a pretty good job of describing the limitations of the Mansion offense.

Bottom line is Maynard can move the chains himself. Mansion couldn't.

I'm guessing he means not getting to practice with the 1's until after Riley's injury, and not getting the opportunity to "ramp up" against OOC competition. Not saying I agree; just my interpretation.

It's about time somebody wrote the naked truth about how limited our offense was at the end of last season.

not bad at all, Carli Lloyd alone worth it, well done young Mansion.
