Funny how your angle of viewing affects your reading of stats.

Everyone here agrees that Maynard has a penchant for throwing lots of interceptions. He has thrown 3 so far this year (one on his first pass of the season).

There is the perception that Price of UW doesn't make the costly interception. He has thrown 3 so far this year.

Yes, I know all about "level of competition" (EWU is light years ahead of Presby, Nebraska is the way better than CU, etc.), and yes, I am frustrated when I see a dumb throw being picked off. Still, 3 interceptions is 3 interceptions, and not a different number depending on who threw them.

Schedule is fairly similar in my book:

@Nebraska>@Colorado>Fresno State>Hawaii>EWU>Presby

We beat these guys with Maynard going 16/31 for 316 yards 3TDs and 2INTs and the interceptions won't matter.

I wouldn't short sell Fresno State. The could have and possibly should have beat Nebraska. And they certainly played them better than what UW did.

I wouldn't say we all agree Maynard throws lots of picks. The number isn't the troubling part to me, it is that they are gifts. When he throws them, they have been REALLY bad reads. They have been thrown directly to defenders. If a QB is taking a chance downfield or a DB makes a great play, INTs happen. The easy ones are scary.

Disagree. Only the Presby INT was a bad read. The other two appeared to be a bad throw or a miscommunication or possibly just jitters (vs Fresno) and an ill advised throw with poor mechanics (Colorado). If he had planted and gotten that throw over the defender, it's a nice play.

Presby was an awful read. Fresno was, too. Miscommunication = bad read. He read what wasn't there, even if the WR MAY have run the wrong route. I agree the Col pick was somewhat different. Pressure, on the run, and a bad throw more than a bad read. Still, it didn't require a great effort from the LB. You are going to have times were everything can be decent and still get picked. The gifts need to be eliminated. I guess my point is that all INTs aren't created equal and, while ZM has been pretty good thus far, the easy picks which are in his control need to go away.

3 games in and Maynard has thrown 9 tds and 3 interceptions. I don't care if they are good or bad reads or passes. If he maintains this 3/1 ratio the rest of the season we will be just fine.

Miscommunication <> bad read. A quarterback can have the perfect read and throw the perfect ball, but have a pass intercepted if the receiver runs the wrong route. In Maynard's case, the numbers are a little misleading. I think he has several throws that could've been picked off by more experienced or athletic DBs or safeties.

Can't agree with that. If he put the ball where the receiver should have been, that's not a bad read, or on the QB at all. I have no insight into whether or not that was the case, but the point is that matters as to whether it was a gift/bad read/Maynard's fault.

On offense I'd say Maynard is the least of our worries, ok, maybe after the WRs. I actually think Maynard's been a pleasant surprise. He's pretty much met or exceeded my expectations.

My biggest worry for Saturday is our defense. Will Pendy have his troops ready to impose our will, or will we be gashed like in Boulder?

This will decide the game right here. If Coach P's defense shuts down UW like they did last year, Bears win.

I hate to add a post that just says "I agree," but, well...

I agree

That's all there is to say about the game until Saturday. Let's close the board for a couple days. :p

What's your point and your proof? He also could have had more receptions if our guys didn't drop the ball, and those actually happened! So his attempts/completion ratio is a little misleading as well.

Price also has a 64% completion percentage.
Maynard is at 52%

I'm not a big fan of PER but Price is 165 and Maynard is 140

Luckily, Maynard threw all his INTs in the first half instead of critical situations in the second half like what Riley and Longshore did.

The great thing about our guy is it seems to make him play better. It seems to me he's just getting his jitters out. He has ice in his veins. Washington will be there for the taking if we step up to the plate.

I'm usually optimistic, but getting beaten badly by uw is quite possible. they have so many weapons. As great as Steve Williams may be, ASJ at 6'6"is a tall order. I expect price who is limited in running to look for ASJ all day long.

Don't take it personally. I'm not trying to prove a point. Maynard's interception vs FSU may very well have been a bad read. I'm just saying that we don't know what happened on the play, and it may not have been a bad read and may be a wrong route run by the receiver. In that case, miscommunication doesn't equal a bad read. In other words, saying miscommunication = bad read is like saying all men without hair are bald. Some are just shaved.

Hopefully we can get some kind of pressure on the QB without giving up too many big plays on screen passes and draws.

Agreed. That one throw in the 3rd quarter against Presby (?) to Keenan with two guys draped all over him was terrible. I like Maynard and his stats would look better sans drops, but he's very lucky to have only 3 picks.

Price has played every down as QB. Montana hasn't touched the ball yet. Price has 11 TDs and 3 INTs. His INTs are not his fault. He has Polk to bail him out.

Maynard has played the first two games and half of the third. He didn't pad his stats against Presbyterian even though we know that he could have thrown for another 3-4 TDs in the 2nd half if he played. Maynard has 9 TDs and 3 INTs. His INTs are all his fault. He has Isi.

Therefore Price is the superior QB. Is this the argument some of you are trying to make? :headbang

I am curious. How many of you would trade Maynard for Price straight-up? I would not. Maynard is building solid chemistry with our receivers and has great wheels. He can only get better too. If I were a UW fan, I would hold my breath every time Price is tackled or trips. With his bad wheels, I seriously doubt that he will last the season. For their sake, I hope Montana is ready to strap on his helmet and take over without any warning.
