absolutely dizzying first half

UW offense is as advertised, but glad maynard and the rest of the guys came to play too.
defense came up huge with the TO and the sack, but they need to nut up.

So should CP keep blitzing?

How is it "too early" to tie the game?

I think this game is going exactly how most reasonable people thought it wouldtwo similar teams with pretty good offenses and weak defenses. However I thought our defense would play better than it is. Same thing as the Colorado game, no pressure on the QB.

Pendergast needs to make some adjustments. i get the feeling he thought Price was mroe hurt than he's proved to be and Pendergast was thinking he could use a rather vanilla pass rush to disrupt the UW passing game.

He's giong to have to dial it up early in the 2nd half with delay blitzes up the middle. Those should get to Price and plant him. A couple of good hits should disrupt the passing game for UW.

If we keep giving Price time, we will lose, badly.

Let this be a lesson: you don't center the ball to set up a 53-yard field goal.

Exactly. This is a competitive game (which most of us expected), but our D is seeming to settle in a bit, so we're definitely in it. Plus we get the ball to start the second half.

Yes. Mix it up.

Could Keenan have jumped up and blocked it or is that "goaltending"?

RC Owens of the 49ers in the late 50's and early 60's once did that.

The only OLB that has looked even halfway decent all game is Whiteside. Pendergast needs to go to a 4-3 for a while, we've got the linemen for it and it would definitely give us a good rush.

It's too early to risk failing on the conversion. 2-point conversions have a way lower chance of success than extra points (yes, even with Tavecchio).

I agree, blitz. Price is going to keep picking us apart if he has time.

Many positives for what looked like a blow-out in the making.

MAJOR props for going for it on 4th and 4 by JT.

Whiteside and Mccain both progressing up to their talent level. Whiteside playing like a stud and causing fumbles, and Mccain creating pressure on the QB.

Let's stay mentally tough, create some pressue on Price, hopefully we can leave with a win in a tough road environment. :gobears:

Guess I'll answer my own question. If he catches it, legal play. If he bats it down, kicking team is awarded a safety (still a point less than a FG) unless they recover ball in the endzone for a TD.

I. Team A attempts a field goal from Team B's 30-yard line. A Team B player in the end zone leaps above the crossbar and bats the ball in flight. The ball goes out of bounds in the end zone.

RULING: Foul for batting the ball in the end zone. During regulation play, postscrimmage kick enforcement gives a safety by penalty. In extra periods, enforcement of the 15-yard penalty is at the previous spot
and Team A retains possession.
II. Team A attempts a field goal from Team B's 30-yard line. A Team B player in the end zone leaps above the crossbar and bats the ball in flight. The ball goes into the end zone and is recovered by Team A.

RULING: Foul for batting the ball in the end zone. The result of the play is a touchdown.
III. Team A attempts a field goal from Team B's 30-yard line. A Team B player in the end zone leaps above the crossbar and bats the ball in flight. The ball goes into the end zone and is recovered by Team B.

RULING: Foul for batting the ball in the end zone. The result of the play is a touchback, safety.
IV. Team A attempts a field goal from Team B's 30-yard line. A Team B player in the end zone leaps above the crossbar and bats the ball in flight. The ball goes into the field of play.

RULING: Foul for batting the ball in the end zone. During regulation play, postscrimmage kick enforcement gives a safety by penalty. The ball remains alive, and Team A may elect the result of the play. If Team A recovers, does not score and accepts the penalty, or if the play occurs in an extra period, enforcement is at the previous spot.

VII. Team A attempts a field goal, and B23, in the end zone, goes above the crossbar and catches the ball.

RULING: Legal play.

I say on,ly if they are delay blitzes up the middle or from Price's right. He will look to scramble/escape and if can go right or forward he seems to beat us. He's made several big plays while scrambling.

Also lose the deep zone defense. Cal for some reason is easy to throw 10-15 yard passes against, and it appears to be a flaw in the zone defense. One that we've had for years and still haven't fixed.

lets see what adjustments are made at half. Defense has been completely outclassed. Fortunate to be where we are at the half. Now lets make them pay for it by taking over the second half and walking out with a big win.

Well Whiteside was the one who left his man to go after Price on the first TD... If he stayed on his man Price would have only maybe gotten a first down. Or at least wait another second to make sure he commits to the run.

I like our chances with Maynard. Last year we would have quit already.

I think they make more mistakes and we win.

Our D looks completely outmatched and flat footed.

I hope they come out with something better than hoping for fumbles...

It's not just that he made a bold decisionhe finally has confidence in his players; specifically he finally has a QB with brass balls. Cal hasn't had this kind of confidence on the road in many years.

With as poor as our defense played in the first 24 minutes... to be only down 1 and we even could have been leading since we kicked 2 short FGs. I am beyond ready to see the future OLBs though. Whiteside and McCain make plays that the starters don't. They might make mistakes, but is it worse than the two current starters just not making the correct plays even though that is the reason they are supposedly starting?

This!

I would not be opposed to implementing a spy in the second half to follow Price around. He'd be there to clean up once Price makes his moves in the pocket to allude initial pressure.

Need less walk-on and more Cecil and McCain. If we're going to be soft against the run off tackle anyway, we might as well have the personnel in place to make them pay on passing downs. I just dont see a noticable difference in the run support between Davis/Walk-On and the younger guys to justify keeping them off the field in the second half on 1st and 2nd downs.

We had a lot of missed opp...dropped pass, short throws, if we clean that up our passed O will be unstoppable... looking that the stats we are fairly even, but considering this is a huge away game I have new higher hopes for this team

I ABSOLUTELY THINK THAT THIS GAME WILL SHOW US IF PENDERGAST HAS THE ABILITY TO ADJUST AT THE HALF.

If the D is unchanged and does not make a difference in the second half I'll be incredibly disappointed.

C'mon Clancy... make the necessary adjustments to shut out the Huskies in the second half. I'm sure Washington will do the same. But UW's pass defense sucks.

I realize he probably doesn't know the defense well enough yet, but I think we could use McClure's athleticism in the defensive backfield as well.

It has been a long time I feel like since I feel like we have a chance to convert a 3rd down. Maynard has been far better this year so far that I expected.

Bigelow is going to take it to the house on the 2nd half opening kickoff. I can feel it.

Hill and the Safeties are struggling right now. Wouldnt be opposed to this either.

In my opinion, Josh Hill is a safety that we are using as a nickel back. McClure should be that nickel back and Hill can be the dime back... but damn Hill isn't cutting it.

The Bears will get the win 41-35, as the defense will tighten up and hold UW to two touchdowns, and Cal will drive the length of the field three times to win it going away!

I would actually use McClure on the outside and slide anthony into the slot because hes more physical and plays the run really well.

the problem is that McClure is considerably smaller than Hill and Tedford prefers big DBs for the nickel back position.

Yes. The D line is handling things well, especially on run D. It's the linebackers that need to shape up or we're in for it.

I'm happy that our drives are a bit longer in general so it should wear out the Washington Defense for the 4th quarter.
