one of our qb's strengths is making plays with his legs. this attribute was not present against washington. we need our qb to scramble and run for first downs when that opportunity is present. it also gives our excellent wide receivers time to find open space for long gainers. our offense needs to make plays and 3 points in the 2nd half against washington is not acceptable. time for our offensive coaches to let maynard improvise and let it rip.

I really agree with what you posit, but alas, it's the Cal coaching method to eliminate the instinctive improvisation that Maynard might have. We will actually see les and less of such play. It might be so missing that Wazzu and even poor pucla might upset Cal........yuck!

I now realize that Longshore was the perfect Cal QB. since he couldn't move at all JT never had to find excuses why he did not move him around behind the LOS.

It's over simplistic thinking about scrambling that it can cure all ills. Scramble is not a play. You still have to run a play. Do you mean you want Maynard to run the option more or roll out more for passing or for the protection to break down so he can improvise? If he runs the option, he's not going to be looking downfield to throw. If he's scrambling for a first down, he's not going to be passing.

I wish he can be more accurate because our receivers are often open.

I'd like to see him roll out of the pocket with an option to pass to a one or two receivers (whether WR, RB, or TE) or keep it. Certainly, it would have given us a better chance of success for one of the four plays beginning with 4th & goal from Washington's 2-yard line.

Notice that Utah at the end, went with four passes from the 5 yd line. The fade was a failure, so they went twice to the TE in the middle of the end zone to score.

After watching other teams play yesterday, I'm changing my opinion. Tedford should have called for a QB sneak at the two yard line. At least one down should have been called for ZM to follow Schwartz. These teams are porous on the DL.

I was really impressed with how, when they have first and goal, Furd loads up with more TEs and blocking backs and just bashes its way into the endzone. They focus the attack on the most vulnerable point on the opponent's D line with very little trickeration. When we reached the UW 2, we had 4 opportunities to simply focus the attack at one of many vulnerable points on the very mediocre UW D line. We had to advance only 6 inches per down. Unbelievable what happened.:headbang

Isi, on first down got to about the 1 1/2 foot line, but the refs spotted the ball at the one. From there, the next play should have been a sneak. Alas........
So close to a great win.

I think Maynard's mobility will be key thursday night. Oregon's defense is a bit undersized, but is going to be one of the faster defenses we play all year. I expect Maynard to get flushed out the pocket alot more than recently. He will definitely have a chance or two to make a play with his feet.

I recall few plays where Maynard was scrambling with possible 1st down few yards ahead, he decided to throw at the last minute, only to be incompleted. I really hope he can cut down those errors. He doesn't need to be like Denard Robinson, but more like Luck.

Scrambling is what u do when the Pass rush forces u to run for your life. If u will notice teams such as Stanford who move the best QB in the nation around behind the LOS so as to not always allow the Rushers to know the exact path to the QB- that's what i am taking about. I amtalking about a planned method of having the QB set up in different points behind the LOS and also having a fair amount of bootleg actions.

Things u could not do with Longshore but could do with Riley and Maynard-but is still absent from the gameplan.

hopefully he stops missing wide open wr's in the red zone or else he won't be starting for too much longer.

Nonsense. I Agree there is certainly room for improvement WRT accuracy, but unless he is injured ZM will take every meaningful snap this year.
